Free will as private determinism
This article suggests that our sense of free will is formed when others react to our behavior with surprise, even though our private knowledge tells us our behavior was determined by our preferences. Such surprised reactions, even when our behavior is from our perspective fully determined, lead us to infer that we exercise free will
The Evolution of Spacing Effects in Autonomous Agents
This paper discusses research into whether the memories of adaptive autonomous agents can be made to spontaneously evolve spacing effects. Experiments involving human memory have shown that learning trials massed closely in time elicit slower learning than the equivalent number trials spaced apart in time. These "spacing effects" have been observed across a wide array of conditions. The experimental results detailed here show that such effects can be made to evolve spontaneously in autonomous agents. The results also suggest that the greater learning difficulty humans experience from closely spaced trials may not be the result of a defect of biology, but rather may be a consequence of a need to give only the appropriate weight to each learning experience
Bounded Delay Scheduling with Packet Dependencies
A common situation occurring when dealing with multimedia traffic is having
large data frames fragmented into smaller IP packets, and having these packets
sent independently through the network. For real-time multimedia traffic,
dropping even few packets of a frame may render the entire frame useless. Such
traffic is usually modeled as having {\em inter-packet dependencies}. We study
the problem of scheduling traffic with such dependencies, where each packet has
a deadline by which it should arrive at its destination. Such deadlines are
common for real-time multimedia applications, and are derived from stringent
delay constraints posed by the application. The figure of merit in such
environments is maximizing the system's {\em goodput}, namely, the number of
frames successfully delivered.
We study online algorithms for the problem of maximizing goodput of
delay-bounded traffic with inter-packet dependencies, and use competitive
analysis to evaluate their performance. We present competitive algorithms for
the problem, as well as matching lower bounds that are tight up to a constant
factor. We further present the results of a simulation study which further
validates our algorithmic approach and shows that insights arising from our
analysis are indeed manifested in practice
Is marketing becoming a dirty word? A longitudinal study of public perceptions of marketing
There is growing sentiment in the marketing community that our society holds an increasingly unfavorable view of the marketing profession. However, this sentiment is largely based on anecdotal and experiential evidence. In response, the authors use content analysis of the general press to investigate the American public’s current and past attitudes towards marketing. They obtain compelling evidence that the public’s attitude towards marketing has deteriorated over the past twenty years. They observe a similar trend in how marketing is treated in the American business press and in blogs. Next, the authors replicate their analyses on news media from another Western society, France, where marketing activity is subject to greater regulation than in the United States. In discussing the results, they propose that the marketing profession will evolve through a mix of three distinct practices that they name ego-marketing, techno-marketing and alter-marketing. The authors argue that marketing’s image in the population will ultimately depend on the growth and strength of each practice within this mix, with techno-marketing playing a pivotal role. They conclude by reflecting on the role that marketing scholars can play in this evolution.marketing practice; marketing image; perception of marketing
Space Station Freedom seal leakage rate analysis and testing summary: Air leaks in ambient versus vacuum exit conditions
This report is intended to reveal the apparent relationship of air seal leakage rates between 2 atmospheres (atm) to 1 atm and 1 atm to vacuum conditions. Gas dynamics analysis is provided as well as data summarizing the MSFC test report, 'Space Station Freedom (S.S. Freedom) Seal Flaw Study With Delta Pressure Leak Rate Comparison Test Report'
The Battle of the Little Bighorn in Finnegans Wake
This article shows that underlying the Museyroom passage of James Joyce's Finnegans Wake is an account of the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Joyce's passage touches on what motivated the battle, its Irish participants, its commanders, Custer's disagreements with his Crow scouts, Sitting Bull's prediction of Custer's failure, Custer's (purely fanciful) joking reply to Sitting Bull's prediction, Custer's home near Bismarck, ND, and his signature song. Other passages scattered throughout Finnegans Wake treat of casualties, a straggler, Custer's trumpeter, Custer's from-the-grave denunciations of his subordinates, and the burial of the dead. The famous "Three quarks for Muster Mark!" passage describes the desolation of Last Stand Hill. And Joyce's famous final paragraph contains an account of the legend of the narrow escape of Custer's Crow scout Ashishishe, who, at the battle's close, hides in the carcass of a horse before making his escape downriver. A brief look at Joyce's choice of names closes out the article
Named Entity Disambiguation for Noisy Text
We address the task of Named Entity Disambiguation (NED) for noisy text. We
present WikilinksNED, a large-scale NED dataset of text fragments from the web,
which is significantly noisier and more challenging than existing news-based
datasets. To capture the limited and noisy local context surrounding each
mention, we design a neural model and train it with a novel method for sampling
informative negative examples. We also describe a new way of initializing word
and entity embeddings that significantly improves performance. Our model
significantly outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods on WikilinksNED
while achieving comparable performance on a smaller newswire dataset.Comment: Accepted to CoNLL 201
