The elemental composition of the Sun II. The iron group elements Sc to Ni
We redetermine the abundances of all iron group nuclei in the Sun, based on
neutral and singly-ionised lines of Sc, Ti, V, Mn, Fe, Co and Ni in the solar
spectrum. We employ a realistic 3D hydrodynamic model solar atmosphere,
corrections for departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE),
stringent line selection procedures and high quality observational data. We
have scoured the literature for the best quality oscillator strengths,
hyperfine constants and isotopic separations available for our chosen lines. We
find , , ,
, , ,
and . Our uncertainties factor in both statistical
and systematic errors (the latter estimated for possible errors in the model
atmospheres and NLTE line formation). The new abundances are generally in good
agreement with the CI meteoritic abundances but with some notable exceptions.
This analysis constitutes both a full exposition and a slight update of the
preliminary results we presented in Asplund, Grevesse, Sauval & Scott
(arXiv:0909.0948), including full line lists and details of all input data we
employed.Comment: 10 figures, 24 pages + 10 online-only pages of tables. v2. Matches

Still flat after all these years
The Universe could be spatially flat, positively curved or negatively curved.
Each option has been popular at various times, partly affected by an
understanding that models tend to evolve away from flatness. The curvature of
the Universe is amenable to measurement, through tests such as the
determination of the angles of sufficiently large triangles. The angle
subtended by the characteristic scale on the Cosmic Microwave sky provides a
direct test, which has now been realised through a combination of exquisite
results from a number of CMB experiments.
After a long and detailed investigation, with many false clues, it seems that
the mystery of the curvature of the Universe is now solved. It's an open and
shut case: the Universe is flat.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, submitted to the Gravity Research Foundation

Anomalous quantum reflection of Bose-Einstein condensates from a silicon surface: the role of dynamical excitations
We investigate the effect of inter-atomic interactions on the
quantum-mechanical reflection of Bose-Einstein condensates from regions of
rapid potential variation. The reflection process depends critically on the
density and incident velocity of the condensate. For low densities and high
velocities, the atom cloud has almost the same form before and after
reflection. Conversely, at high densities and low velocities, the reflection
process generates solitons and vortex rings that fragment the condensate. We
show that this fragmentation can explain the anomalously low reflection
probabilities recently measured for low-velocity condensates incident on a
silicon surface.Comment: 5 figures, 5 pages, references correcte
The elemental composition of the Sun III. The heavy elements Cu to Th
We re-evaluate the abundances of the elements in the Sun from copper ()
to thorium (). Our results are mostly based on neutral and singly-ionised
lines in the solar spectrum. We use the latest 3D hydrodynamic solar model
atmosphere, and in a few cases also correct for departures from local
thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) using non-LTE (NLTE) calculations performed in
1D. In order to minimise statistical and systematic uncertainties, we make
stringent line selections, employ the highest-quality observational data and
carefully assess oscillator strengths, hyperfine constants and isotopic
separations available in the literature, for every line included in our
analysis. Our results are typically in good agreement with the abundances in
the most pristine meteorites, but there are some interesting exceptions. This
analysis constitutes both a full exposition and a slight update of the relevant
parts of the preliminary results we presented in Asplund, Grevesse, Sauval &
Scott (arXiv:0909.0948), including full line lists and details of all input
data that we have employed.Comment: 5 figures, 18 pages + 6 online-only pages of tables. v2. Matches

Radio Foregrounds for the 21cm Tomography of the Neutral Intergalactic Medium at High Redshifts
Absorption or emission against the cosmic microwave background radiation
(CMB) may be observed in the redshifted 21cm line if the spin temperature of
the neutral intergalactic medium prior to reionization differs from the CMB
temperature. This so-called 21cm tomography should reveal important information
on the physical state of the intergalactic medium at high redshifts. The
fluctuations in the redshifted 21 cm, due to gas density inhomogeneities at
early times, should be observed at meter wavelengths by the next generation
radio telescopes such as the proposed {\it Square Kilometer Array (SKA)}. Here
we show that the extra-galactic radio sources provide a serious contamination
to the brightness temperature fluctuations expected in the redshifted 21 cm
emission from the IGM at high redshifts. Unless the radio source population
cuts off at flux levels above the planned sensitivity of SKA, its clustering
noise component will dominate the angular fluctuations in the 21 cm signal. The
integrated foreground signal is smooth in frequency space and it should
nonetheless be possible to identify the sharp spectral feature arising from the
non-uniformities in the neutral hydrogen density during the epoch when the
first UV sources reionize the intergalactic medium.Comment: 5 pages emulateapj with 1 figure, accepted to Ap

A review of Multi-Agent Simulation Models in Agriculture
Multi-Agent Simulation (MAS) models are intended to capture emergent properties of complex systems that are not amenable to equilibrium analysis. They are beginning to see some use for analysing agricultural systems. The paper reports on work in progress to create a MAS for specific sectors in New Zealand agriculture. One part of the paper focuses on options for modelling land and other resources such as water, labour and capital in this model, as well as markets for exchanging resources and commodities. A second part considers options for modelling agent heterogeneity, especially risk preferences of farmers, and the impacts on decision-making. The final section outlines the MAS that the authors will be constructing over the next few years and the types of research questions that the model will help investigate.multi-agent simulation models, modelling, agent-based model, cellular automata, decision-making, Crop Production/Industries, Environmental Economics and Policy, Farm Management, Land Economics/Use, Livestock Production/Industries,
William Edwards Ladd, M.D. (1880-1967): the description of his bands.
In the early 20th century, an established surgical specialty catering to pediatric surgery did not exist, and pediatric surgical ailments were operated on by general surgeons. With his devotion to childhood diseases and his unique thinking in surgical development, William E. Ladd would become a leading figure in America by pioneering the field of pediatric surgery
