Valuing Ecosystem Services with Fishery Rents: A Lumped-Parameter Approach to Hypoxia in the Neuse River Estuary
Valuing ecosystem services with microeconomic underpinnings presents challenges because these services typically constitute nonmarket values and contribute to human welfare indirectly through a series of ecological pathways that are dynamic, nonlinear, and difficult to quantify and link to appropriate economic spatial and temporal scales. This paper develops and demonstrates a method to value a portion of ecosystem services when a commercial fishery is dependent on the quality of estuarine habitat. Using a lumped-parameter, dynamic open access bioeconomic model that is spatially explicit and includes predator-prey interactions, this paper quantifies part of the value of improved ecosystem function in the Neuse River Estuary when nutrient pollution is reduced. Specifically, it traces the effects of nitrogen loading on the North Carolina commercial blue crab fishery by modeling the response of primary production and the subsequent impact on hypoxia (low dissolved oxygen). Hypoxia, in turn, affects blue crabs and their preferred prey. The discounted present value fishery rent increase from a 30% reduction in nitrogen loadings in the Neuse is $2.56 million, though this welfare estimate is fairly sensitive to some parameter values. A method for exploratory repeated-measures analysis applied to a breast-cancer screening study
When a model may be fitted separately to each individual statistical unit,
inspection of the point estimates may help the statistician to understand
between-individual variability and to identify possible relationships. However,
some information will be lost in such an approach because estimation
uncertainty is disregarded. We present a comparative method for exploratory
repeated-measures analysis to complement the point estimates that was motivated
by and is demonstrated by analysis of data from the CADET II breast-cancer
screening study. The approach helped to flag up some unusual reader behavior,
to assess differences in performance, and to identify potential random-effects

Ecological and genetic effects of introduced species on their native competitors
Species introductions to new habitats can cause a decline in the population
size of competing native species and consequently also in their genetic
diversity. We are interested in why these adverse effects are weak in some
cases whereas in others the native species declines to the point of extinction.
While the introduction rate and the growth rate of the introduced species in
the new environment clearly have a positive relationship with invasion success
and impact, the influence of competition is poorly understood. Here, we
investigate how the intensity of interspecific competition influences the
persistence time of a native species in the face of repeated and ongoing
introductions of the nonnative species. We analyze two stochastic models: a
model for the population dynamics of both species and a model that additionally
includes the population genetics of the native species at a locus involved in
its adaptation to a changing environment. Counterintuitively, both models
predict that the persistence time of the native species is lowest for an
intermediate intensity of competition. This phenomenon results from the
opposing effects of competition at different stages of the invasion process:
With increasing competition intensity more introduction events are needed until
a new species can establish, but increasing competition also speeds up the
exclusion of the native species by an established nonnative competitor. By
comparing the ecological and the eco-genetic model, we detect and quantify a

Modeling of the transient interstitial diffusion of implanted atoms during low-temperature annealing of silicon substrates
It has been shown that many of the phenomena related to the formation of
"tails" in the low-concentration region of ion-implanted impurity distribution
are due to the anomalous diffusion of nonequilibrium impurity interstitials.
These phenomena include boron implantation in preamorphized silicon, a "hot"
implantation of indium ions, annealing of ion-implanted layers et cetera. In
particular, to verify this microscopic mechanism, a simulation of boron
redistribution during low-temperature annealing of ion-implanted layers has
been carried out under different conditions of transient enhanced diffusion
suppression. Due to the good agreement with the experimental data, the values
of the average migration length of nonequilibrium impurity interstitials have
been obtained. It has been shown that for boron implanted into a silicon layer
preamorphized by germanium ions the average migration length of impurity
interstitials at the annealing temperature of 800 Celsius degrees be reduced
from 11 nm to approximately 6 nm due to additional implantation of nitrogen.
The further shortening of the average migration length is observed if the
processing temperature is reduced to 750 Celsius degrees. It is also found that
for implantation of BF2 ions into silicon crystal, the value of the average
migration length of boron interstitials is equal to 7.2 nm for thermal
treatment at a temperature of 800 Celsius degrees.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, RevTe
Longitudinal-Transverse Separations of Structure Functions at Low for Hydrogen and Deuterium
We report on a study of the longitudinal to transverse cross section ratio,
, at low values of and , as determined from
inclusive inelastic electron-hydrogen and electron-deuterium scattering data
from Jefferson Lab Hall C spanning the four-momentum transfer range 0.06 GeV. Even at the lowest values of , remains
nearly constant and does not disappear with decreasing , as expected. We
find a nearly identical behaviour for hydrogen and deuterium.Comment: 4 pages, 2 gigure
First narrow-band search for continuous gravitational waves from known pulsars in advanced detector data
Spinning neutron stars asymmetric with respect to their rotation axis are potential sources of
continuous gravitational waves for ground-based interferometric detectors. In the case of known pulsars a
fully coherent search, based on matched filtering, which uses the position and rotational parameters
obtained from electromagnetic observations, can be carried out. Matched filtering maximizes the signalto-
noise (SNR) ratio, but a large sensitivity loss is expected in case of even a very small mismatch
between the assumed and the true signal parameters. For this reason, narrow-band analysis methods have
been developed, allowing a fully coherent search for gravitational waves from known pulsars over a
fraction of a hertz and several spin-down values. In this paper we describe a narrow-band search of
11 pulsars using data from Advanced LIGO’s first observing run. Although we have found several initial
outliers, further studies show no significant evidence for the presence of a gravitational wave signal.
Finally, we have placed upper limits on the signal strain amplitude lower than the spin-down limit for 5 of
the 11 targets over the bands searched; in the case of J1813-1749 the spin-down limit has been beaten for
the first time. For an additional 3 targets, the median upper limit across the search bands is below the
spin-down limit. This is the most sensitive narrow-band search for continuous gravitational waves carried
out so far

European farmers’ incentives to promote natural pest control service in arable fields
Integrated pest management (IPM) is widely encouraged among the European Union (EU) member states. The successful adoption of IPM techniques requires strong farmer motivation and participation. However, few studies have explored EU farmers’ incentives to promote natural enemies of crop pests in the fields, and none have addressed how this could be influenced by farmers’ recognition of natural pest control service. Based on interviews among arable farmers involved in an EU funded agri-environmental project across seven member states, natural pest control was perceived to be a less important contributor to crop production than soil fertility and pollination. Preferences toward managing semi-natural habitats for natural enemies were also relatively low, while insecticides were commonly used among participants. Ordinal logistic regression indicates that farmers’ decision to promote natural pest control was positively associated with the perceived importance of this ecosystem service for crop production. However, they expressed a relatively low confidence in the pest control efficacies of natural enemies compared with insecticides, especially under high pest damage levels. Farmers with greater income have more financial flexibility to adopt either pest control method. The environment surrounding a farm may also influence its owner’s willingness to promote natural pest control
Gravitational Waves From Known Pulsars: Results From The Initial Detector Era
We present the results of searches for gravitational waves from a large selection of pulsars using data from the most recent science runs (S6, VSR2 and VSR4) of the initial generation of interferometric gravitational wave detectors LIGO (Laser Interferometric Gravitational-wave Observatory) and Virgo. We do not see evidence for gravitational wave emission from any of the targeted sources but produce upper limits on the emission amplitude. We highlight the results from seven young pulsars with large spin-down luminosities. We reach within a factor of five of the canonical spin-down limit for all seven of these, whilst for the Crab and Vela pulsars we further surpass their spin-down limits. We present new or updated limits for 172 other pulsars (including both young and millisecond pulsars). Now that the detectors are undergoing major upgrades, and, for completeness, we bring together all of the most up-to-date results from all pulsars searched for during the operations of the first-generation LIGO, Virgo and GEO600 detectors.
