Confirming what we know: Understanding questionable research practices in intro physics labs
Many institutions are changing the focus of their introductory physics labs
from verifying physics content towards teaching students about the skills and
nature of science. As instruction shifts, so too will the ways students
approach and behave in the labs. In this study, we evaluated students' lab
notes from an early activity in an experimentation-focused lab course. We found
that about 30% of student groups (out of 107 groups at three institutions)
recorded questionable research practices in their lab notes, such as subjective
interpretations of results or manipulating equipment and data. The large
majority of these practices were associated with confirmatory goals, which we
suspect stem from students' prior exposure to verification labs. We propose
ways for experimentation-focused labs to better engage students in the
responsible conduct of research and authentic scientific practice.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Exploring our Region’s Prosperity
Prosperity refers to the economic success of the regional economy and can be measured using income data. In order to assess regional prosperity in the Portland Metropolitan region, we will consider two measures of income: aggregate regional income (Metropolitan GDP) and income for individuals and households. In addition, we will discuss poverty levels in the Portland Metropolitan region according to the federal poverty standard. To ascertain the significant income variations both within the region and between comparable regions, this paper will compare counties within the Portland Metropolitan region and discuss how Portland measures up to ten comparator regions in the United States
Ionized Gas Motions and the Structure of Feedback Near a Forming Globular Cluster in NGC 5253
We observed Brackett 4.05m emission towards the supernebula in
NGC 5253 with NIRSPEC on Keck II in adaptive optics mode, NIRSPAO, to probe
feedback from its exciting embedded super star cluster (SSC). NIRSPEC's
Slit-Viewing Camera was simultaneously used to image the K-band continuum at
resolution. We register the IR continuum with HST imaging, and
find that the visible clusters are offset from the K-band peak, which coincides
with the Br peak of the supernebula and its associated molecular
cloud. The spectra of the supernebula exhibit Br emission with a
strong, narrow core. The linewidths are 65-76 km s, FWHM, comparable to
those around individual ultra-compact HII regions within our Galaxy. A weak,
broad (FWHM150-175 km s) component is detected on the base of
the line, which could trace a population of sources with high-velocity winds.
The core velocity of Br emission shifts by +13 km s from NE to
SW across the supernebula, possibly indicating a bipolar outflow from an
embedded object, or linked to a foreground redshifted gas filament. The results
can be explained if the supernebula comprises thousands of ionized wind regions
around individual massive stars, stalled in their expansion due to critical
radiative cooling and unable to merge to drive a coherent cluster wind. Based
on the absence of an outflow with large mass loss, we conclude that feedback is
currently ineffective at dispersing gas, and the SSC retains enriched material
out of which it may continue to form stars.Comment: 24 pages, 9 figure
Surface Gravities for 228 M, L, and T Dwarfs in the NIRSPEC Brown Dwarf Spectroscopic Survey
We combine 131 new medium-resolution (R~2000) J-band spectra of M, L, and T
dwarfs from the Keck NIRSPEC Brown Dwarf Spectroscopic Survey (BDSS) with 97
previously published BDSS spectra to study surface-gravity-sensitive indices
for 228 low-mass stars and brown dwarfs spanning spectral types M5-T9.
Specifically, we use an established set of spectral indices to determine
surface gravity classifications for all M6-L7 objects in our sample by
measuring equivalent widths (EW) of the K I lines at 1.1692, 1.1778, 1.2529 um,
and the 1.2 um FeHJ absorption index. Our results are consistent with previous
surface gravity measurements, showing a distinct double peak - at ~L5 and T5 -
in K I EW as a function of spectral type. We analyze K I EWs of 73 objects of
known ages and find a linear trend between log(Age) and EW. From this
relationship, we assign age ranges to the very low gravity, intermediate
gravity, and field gravity designations for spectral types M6-L0.
Interestingly, the ages probed by these designations remain broad, change with
spectral type, and depend on the gravity sensitive index used. Gravity
designations are useful indicators of the possibility of youth, but current

Care staff intentions to support adults with an intellectual disability to engage in physical activity: An application of the Theory of Planned Behaviour
Researchers suggest that people with an intellectual disability (ID) undertake less physical activity than the general population and many rely, to some extent, on others to help them to access activities. The Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) model was previously found to significantly predict the intention of care staff to facilitate a healthy diet in those they supported. The present study examined whether the TPB was useful in predicting the intentions of 78 Scottish care staff to support people with ID to engage in physical activity. Regression analyses indicated that perceived behavioural control was the most significant predictor of both care staff intention to facilitate physical activity and reported physical activity levels of the people they supported. Attitudes significantly predicted care staff intention to support physical activity, but this intention was not itself significantly predictive of reported activity levels. Increasing carers' sense of control over their ability to support clients' physical activity may be more effective in increasing physical activity than changing their attitudes towards promoting activit
