Asymmetric information, self-selection and pricing of insurance contracts: the simple no-claims case
This paper presents an optional bonus-malus contract based on a pri-ori risk classification of the underlying insurance contract. By inducing self-selection, the purchase of the bonus-malus contract can be used as a screening device. This gives an even better pricing performance than both an experience rating scheme and a classical no-claims bonus system. An application to the Danish automobile insurance market is considered
The importance of the choice of test for finding evidence of asymmetric information
AbstractWe put one of the predictions of adverse-selection models to the test, using data from the Danish automobile insurance market: that there is a positive correlation between claims risk and insurance coverage. We can find a statistically significant insurance coverage--risk correlation when coverage is expressed relative to the insurance premium, but not when it is expressed in monetary terms.</jats:p
Ultralong-range radiative excitation transfer between quantum dots in a planar microcavity
We study the system of two quantum dots lying on the central plane of a
planar semiconductor microcavity. By solving the full Maxwell problem, we
demonstrate that the rate of resonant excitation transfer between the two dots
decays as as a function of the distance at long distance. This
very long-range mechanism is due to the leaky and guided modes of the
microcavity, which act as effective radiative transfer channels. At short
distance, the dependence of the F\"orster mechanism, induced by the
electrostatic dipole-dipole interaction, is recovered
Inviwo -- A Visualization System with Usage Abstraction Levels
The complexity of today's visualization applications demands specific
visualization systems tailored for the development of these applications.
Frequently, such systems utilize levels of abstraction to improve the
application development process, for instance by providing a data flow network
editor. Unfortunately, these abstractions result in several issues, which need
to be circumvented through an abstraction-centered system design. Often, a high
level of abstraction hides low level details, which makes it difficult to
directly access the underlying computing platform, which would be important to
achieve an optimal performance. Therefore, we propose a layer structure
developed for modern and sustainable visualization systems allowing developers
to interact with all contained abstraction levels. We refer to this interaction
capabilities as usage abstraction levels, since we target application
developers with various levels of experience. We formulate the requirements for
such a system, derive the desired architecture, and present how the concepts
have been exemplary realized within the Inviwo visualization system.
Furthermore, we address several specific challenges that arise during the
realization of such a layered architecture, such as communication between
different computing platforms, performance centered encapsulation, as well as
layer-independent development by supporting cross layer documentation and
debugging capabilities

Association between synovial fluid levels of aggrecan ARGS fragments and radiographic progression in knee osteoarthritis
INTRODUCTION: Aggrecanase cleavage at the (392)Glu-(393)Ala bond in the interglobular domain (IGD) of aggrecan, releasing N-terminal (393)ARGS fragments, is an early key event in arthritis and joint injuries. We determined whether synovial fluid (SF) levels of ARGS-aggrecan distinguish subjects with progressive radiographic knee osteoarthritis (ROA) from those with stable or no ROA. METHODS: We studied 141 subjects who, at examination A, had been given meniscectomies an average of 18 years earlier (range, 15 to 22 years). Seventeen individuals without surgery, and without known injury to the menisci or cruciate ligaments, were used as references. At examinations A and B, with a mean follow-up time of 7.5 years, we obtained SF and standing tibiofemoral and skyline patellofemoral radiographs. SF ARGS-aggrecan was measured with an electrochemiluminescence immunoassay, and we graded radiographs according to the OARSI atlas. The association between SF ARGS levels at examination A and progression of radiographic features of knee OA between examinations A and B was assessed by using logistic regression adjusted for age, gender, body mass index, and time between examinations, and stratified by ROA status at examination A. RESULTS: We found a weak negative association between SF ARGS concentrations and loss of joint space: the likelihood of progression of radiographic joint space narrowing decreased 0.9 times per picomole per milliliter increase in ARGS (odds ratio (OR) 0.89; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.79 to 0.996). In subjects with and without preexisting ROA at examination A, the association was OR, 0.96; 0.81 to 1.13; and 0.77; 0.62 to 0.95, respectively. Average levels of SF ARGS 18 years after meniscectomy were no different from those of reference subjects and were not correlated to radiographic status at examination A. CONCLUSIONS: In subjects with previous knee meniscectomy but without ROA, levels of SF ARGS-aggrecan were weakly and inversely associated with increased loss of joint space over a period of 7.5 years
Observation of Transparency of Erbium-doped Silicon nitride in photonic crystal nanobeam cavities
One-dimensional nanobeam photonic crystal cavities are fabricated in an
Er-doped amorphous silicon nitride layer. Photoluminescence from the cavities
around 1.54 um is studied at cryogenic and room temperatures at different
optical pump powers. The resonators demonstrate Purcell enhanced absorption and
emission rates, also confirmed by time-resolved measurements. Resonances
exhibit linewidth narrowing with pump power, signifying absorption bleaching
and the onset of stimulated emission in the material at both 5.5 K and room
temperature. We estimate from the cavity linewidths that Er has been pumped to
transparency at the cavity resonance wavelength.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure
Sick leave patterns in common musculoskeletal disorders – a study of doctor prescribed sick leave
Comparative data on sick leave within musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) is limited. Our objective was to give a descriptive overview of sick leave patterns in different MSDs
