Les Églises dans la Guerre froide : l’année 1956

The protestant Churches in Europe reacted very differently to the Hungarian revolution (October 1956) and its repression. The Ecumenical Council of Churches refused to compare the situation of the Churches under communism with the Kirchenkampf, and denied each involvement in the revolution. In the East one adopted the interpretation of the Czech theologian Hromádka : the «conservative uprising » of 1956 had been fomented by the West. In the German Democratic Republic new church models were developed that advocated a return to «preconstantinian » Christianity, as a humble witness to the Gospel. From 1957 onward the Conference of European Churches allowed the encounter of Christians of the East and the West.</jats:p
