    Efficient Rewirings for Enhancing Synchronizability of Dynamical Networks

    In this paper, we present an algorithm for optimizing synchronizability of complex dynamical networks. Based on some network properties, rewirings, i.e. eliminating an edge and creating a new edge elsewhere, are performed iteratively avoiding always self-loops and multiple edges between the same nodes. We show that the method is able to enhance the synchronizability of networks of any size and topological properties in a small number of steps that scales with the network size.Although we take the eigenratio of the Laplacian as the target function for optimization, we will show that it is also possible to choose other appropriate target functions exhibiting almost the same performance. The optimized networks are Ramanujan graphs, and thus, this rewiring algorithm could be used to produce Ramanujan graphs of any size and average degree

    Predicting single spikes and spike patterns with the Hindmarsh-Rose model

    Most simple neuron models are only able to model traditional spiking behavior. As physiologists discover and classify different electrical phenotypes, computational neuroscientists become interested in using simple phenomenological models that can exhibit these different types of spiking patterns. The Hindmarsh-Rose model is a three-dimensional relaxation oscillator which can show both spiking and bursting patterns and has a chaotic regime. We test the predictive powers of the Hindmarsh-Rose model on two different test databases. We show that the Hindmarsh-Rose model can predict the spiking response of rat layer 5 neocortical pyramidal neurons on a stochastic input signal with a precision comparable to the best known spiking models. We also show that the Hindmarsh-Rose model can capture qualitatively the electrical footprints in a database of different types of neocortical interneurons. When the model parameters are fit from sub-threshold measurements only, the model still captures well the electrical phenotype, which suggests that the sub-threshold signals contain information about the firing patterns of the different neuron

    A comparison of primary and secondary relevance judgements for real-life topics

    The notion of relevance is fundamental to the field of Information Retrieval. Within the field a generally accepted conception of relevance as inherently subjective has emerged, with an individual’s assessment of relevance influenced by numerous contextual factors. In this paper we present a user study that examines in detail the differences between primary and secondary assessors on a set of “real-world” topics which were gathered specifically for the work. By gathering topics which are representative of the staff and students at a major university, at a particular point in time, we aim to explore differences between primary and secondary relevance judgements for real-life search tasks. Findings suggest that while secondary assessors may find the assessment task challenging in various ways (they generally possess less interest and knowledge in secondary topics and take longer to assess documents), agreement between primary and secondary assessors is high

    Connectivity in ad-hoc and hybrid networks

    We consider a large-scale wireless network, but with a low density of nodes per unit area. Interferences are then less critical, contrary to connectivity. This paper studies the latter property for both a purely ad-hoc network and a hybrid network, where fixed base stations can be reached in multiple hops. We assume here that power constraints are modeled by a maximal distance above which two nodes are not (directly) connected. We find that the introduction of a sparse network of base stations does significantly help in increasing the connectivity, but only when the node density is much larger in one dimension than in the other. We explain the results by percolation theory. We obtain analytical expressions of the probability of connectivity in the 1-dim. case. We also show that at a low spatial density of nodes, bottlenecks are unavoidable. Results obtained on actual population data confirm our findings

    Locating the Source of Diffusion in Large-Scale Networks

    How can we localize the source of diffusion in a complex network? Due to the tremendous size of many real networks--such as the Internet or the human social graph--it is usually infeasible to observe the state of all nodes in a network. We show that it is fundamentally possible to estimate the location of the source from measurements collected by sparsely-placed observers. We present a strategy that is optimal for arbitrary trees, achieving maximum probability of correct localization. We describe efficient implementations with complexity O(N^{\alpha}), where \alpha=1 for arbitrary trees, and \alpha=3 for arbitrary graphs. In the context of several case studies, we determine how localization accuracy is affected by various system parameters, including the structure of the network, the density of observers, and the number of observed cascades.Comment: To appear in Physical Review Letters.     Tragic but brave or just crips with chips? Songs and their lyrics in the Disability Arts Movement in Britain

    Disability culture is a site within which social and positional identities are struggled for and dominant discourses rejected; in which mainstream representations of people with impairments – as victims of personal tragedy – are held to the light and revealed as hegemonic constructions within a disabling society. Drawing upon styles that range from jazz, blues and folk to reggae, performance poetry and punk, disabled singers and bands in the Disability Arts Movement in Britain have been central to the development of an affirmative disability discourse rooted in ideas of pride, anger and strength. Examining lyrics by Johnny Crescendo, Ian Stanton and the Fugertivs – performers emerging as part of this movement in the 1980s and 1990s – this article considers the dark humour which runs through much of this work. It is suggested that these lyrics' observational reflections on everyday experiences of being oppressed as disabled people have been overlooked within critical disability studies to date, but are important in developing an understanding of positive disability identity as a tool available to disabled people in order to make sense of, and express themselves within, the world in which they find themselves

    Roadmap to a One Health agenda 2030

    The current fragmented framework of health governance for humans, animals and environment, together with the conventional linear approach to solving current health problems, is failing to meet today's health challenges and is proving unsustainable. Advances in healthcare depend increasingly on intensive interventions, technological developments and expensive pharmaceuticals. The disconnect grows between human health, animal health and environmental and ecosystems health. Human development gains have come with often unrecognized negative externalities affecting ecosystems. Deterioration in biodiversity and ecosystem services threatens to reverse the health gains of the last century. A paradigm shift is urgently required to de-sectoralize human, animal, plant and ecosystem health and to take a more integrated approach to health, One Health (OH). The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) offer a framework and unique opportunity for this. Through analysing individual SDGs, we argue the feasibility of an OH approach towards achieving them. Feasibility assessments and outcome evaluations are often constrained by sectoral politics within a national framework, historic possession of expertise, as well as tried and tested metrics. OH calls for a better understanding, acceptance and use of a broader and transdisciplinary set of assessment metrics. Key objectives of OH are presented: that humans reconnect with our natural past and accept our place in, and dependence on our planet's ecosystems; and that we recognize our dependence on ecosystem services, the impact of our development thereon and accept our responsibility towards future generations to address this. Several action points are proposed to meet these objectives.peer-reviewe

    Heritability of Obsessive-Compulsive symptom dimensions.

    Recent research has shown that obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) differ remarkably among patients and can be divided into several symptom dimensions. OCS are influenced by genetic components, but it is unknown to what extent these symptom dimensions are heritable. The phenotypic heterogeneity also raises the question to what extent the symptom dimensions are influenced by specific or shared genetic factors. We studied a population sample of 1,383 female twins from the Virginia Twin Registry. OCS was measured by a questionnaire with 20 items from the Padua Inventory. After factor analysis, three reliable OC symptom dimensions were retained: Rumination, Contamination, and Checking. These OC dimensions were analyzed with multivariate genetic models to investigate both the overlap and uniqueness of genetic and environmental contributions underlying OC symptom dimensions. The multivariate common pathway model provided the best description of the data. All symptom dimensions share variation with a latent common factor, that is, OC behavior. Variation in this common factor was explained by both genes (36%) and environmental factors (64%). Only the Contamination dimension was influenced by specific genes and seemed to be a relatively independent dimension. The results suggest that a broad OC behavioral phenotype exists, influenced by both genes and nonshared environment. In addition, we found evidence for specific genetic and environmental factors underlying the Contamination dimension. Use of the Contamination dimension could therefore provide a powerful approach for the detection of genetic susceptibility loci that contribute to OCS. © 2007 Wiley-Liss, Inc
