On Detecting Discrete Cheshire Charge
We analyze the charges carried by loops of string in models with non-abelian
local discrete symmetry. The charge on a loop has no localized source, but can
be detected by means of the Aharonov--Bohm interaction of the loop with another
string. We describe the process of charge detection, and the transfer of charge
between point particles and string loops, in terms of gauge--invariant

An electronic pan/tilt/zoom camera system
A camera system for omnidirectional image viewing applications that provides pan, tilt, zoom, and rotational orientation within a hemispherical field of view (FOV) using no moving parts was developed. The imaging device is based on the effect that from a fisheye lens, which produces a circular image of an entire hemispherical FOV, can be mathematically corrected using high speed electronic circuitry. An incoming fisheye image from any image acquisition source is captured in memory of the device, a transformation is performed for the viewing region of interest and viewing direction, and a corrected image is output as a video image signal for viewing, recording, or analysis. As a result, this device can accomplish the functions of pan, tilt, rotation, and zoom throughout a hemispherical FOV without the need for any mechanical mechanisms. A programmable transformation processor provides flexible control over viewing situations. Multiple images, each with different image magnifications and pan tilt rotation parameters, can be obtained from a single camera. The image transformation device can provide corrected images at frame rates compatible with RS-170 standard video equipment
Identifying Sneutrino Dark Matter: Interplay between the LHC and Direct Search
Under R-parity, the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) is stable and may
serve as a good dark matter candidate. The R-parity can be naturally introduced
with a gauge origin at TeV scale. We go over why a TeV scale B-L gauge
extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) is one of the
most natural, if not demanded, low energy supersymmetric models. In the
presence of a TeV scale Abelian gauge symmetry, the (predominantly)
right-handed sneutrino LSP can be a good dark matter candidate. Its
identification at the LHC is challenging because it does not carry any standard
model charge. We show how we can use the correlation between the LHC
experiments (dilepton resonance signals) and the direct dark matter search
experiments (such as CDMS and XENON) to identify the right-handed sneutrino LSP
dark matter in the B-L extended MSSM.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Transitions and crossover phenomena in fully frustrated XY systems
We study the two-dimensional fully frustrated XY (FFXY) model and two related
models, a discretization of the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson Hamiltonian for the
critical modes of the FFXY model and a coupled Ising-XY model, by means of
Monte Carlo simulations on square lattices L x L, L=O(10^3). We show that their
phase diagram is characterized by two very close chiral and spin transitions,
at T_ch > T_sp respectively, of the Ising and Kosterlitz-Thouless type. At T_ch
the Ising regime sets in only after a preasymptotic regime, which appears
universal to some extent. The approach is nonmonotonic for most observables,
with a wide region controlled by an effective exponent nu_eff=0.8.Comment: 9 page
High Speed Balancing Applied to the T700 Engine
The work performed under Contracts NAS3-23929 and NAS3-24633 is presented. MTI evaluated the feasibility of high-speed balancing for both the T700 power turbine rotor and the compressor rotor. Modifications were designed for the existing Corpus Christi Army Depot (CCAD) T53/T55 high-speed balancing system for balancing T700 power turbine rotors. Tests conducted under these contracts included a high-speed balancing evaluation for T700 power turbines in the Army/NASA drivetrain facility at MTI. The high-speed balancing tests demonstrated the reduction of vibration amplitudes at operating speed for both low-speed balanced and non-low-speed balanced T700 power turbines. In addition, vibration data from acceptance tests of T53, T55, and T700 engines were analyzed and a vibration diagnostic procedure developed
