    Occupational and regional mobility as substitutes: A new approach to understanding job changes and wage inequality

    Job mobility offers opportunities for workers to obtain wage increases, but returns to job changes differ considerably. We argue that parts of this inequality result from a trade-off between occupational and regional mobility. Both mobility types offer alternative strategies to improve one's labor market position; however, they each contain unique restrictions. High costs for regional mobility can thus evoke occupation changes, even though the resulting human capital devaluation leads to lower wage increases. We use linked retrospective life-course data for Germany (ALWA-ADIAB) and apply competing risks models to show that restrictions on one type of mobility drive individuals toward the other. Using fixed-effects regressions, we show that occupational mobility leads to lower wage increases compared to regional mobility. We conclude that the trade-off between occupational and regional mobility explains part of the differential returns to job mobility and contributes to wage inequality. We expect these mechanisms to become more pronounced in the future as technological and institutional changes alter job requirements and thereby mobility incentives.Arbeitsplatzmobilität bietet Arbeitnehmern die Möglichkeit höhere Löhne zu erzielen, doch die Höhe der Lohnzuwächse variiert erheblich. Wir greifen auf verknüpfte retrospektive Lebensverlaufsdaten für Deutschland zurück (ALWA-ADIAB) und benutzen Competing-Risk Regressionen um zu zeigen, dass Restriktionen für eine Mobilitätsart dazu führen, dass Individuen eher die andere Mobilitätsform wählen. Mithilfe von Fixed-Effects- Regressio-nen zeigen wir, dass berufliche Mobilität - verglichen mit regionaler Mobilität - zu niedrigeren Lohnanstiegen führt. Aus den Ergebnissen schlussfolgern wir, dass der Trade-Off zwischen beruflicher und regionaler Mobilität Teile der ungleichen Lohnerträge durch Arbeitsplatzmobilität erklärt und zur Lohnungleichheit beiträgt. Wir erwarten, dass diese Mechanismen zukünftig weiter an Relevanz gewinnen, da technologischer und institutioneller Wandel berufliche Anforderungen verändert und somit Mobilitätsanreize setzt

    Changing climates, and increased pressure from government and consumers to reduce the impacts of red meat on the environment threaten the viability of red meat production in Australia. We used bioeconomic modelling of a constructed case study farm in the Northern Downs region of Queensland to understand the impacts of a future climate (centred on 2050) on the productivity, profitability, and sustainability of beef production, and to evaluate a range of interventions. We also used semi-structured interviews to understand human adaptive and transformation capacity. Without changes to management, productivity, profitability, and sustainability of beef production in the Northern Downs region is predicted to decrease by 2050. Of the activities modelled, improving the feedbase through oversowing of herbaceous legumes, and transitioning from a breeder herd to steer turnover operation resulted in the greatest improvements in productivity and profitability. Large decreases in methane emissions, on a per ha and per kg liveweight sold basis, were possible through changing to a steer turnover operation and through the application of novel technologies that could provide reductions in the production of enteric methane. The results provide an indication of potential adaptation pathways for the industry and highlight gaps for future research and development

    Multiplicity dependence of jet-like two-particle correlations in p-Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02 TeV

    Two-particle angular correlations between unidentified charged trigger and associated particles are measured by the ALICE detector in p-Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The transverse-momentum range 0.7 <pT,assoc<pT,trig< < p_{\rm{T}, assoc} < p_{\rm{T}, trig} < 5.0 GeV/cc is examined, to include correlations induced by jets originating from low momen\-tum-transfer scatterings (minijets). The correlations expressed as associated yield per trigger particle are obtained in the pseudorapidity range η<0.9|\eta|<0.9. The near-side long-range pseudorapidity correlations observed in high-multiplicity p-Pb collisions are subtracted from both near-side short-range and away-side correlations in order to remove the non-jet-like components. The yields in the jet-like peaks are found to be invariant with event multiplicity with the exception of events with low multiplicity. This invariance is consistent with the particles being produced via the incoherent fragmentation of multiple parton--parton scatterings, while the yield related to the previously observed ridge structures is not jet-related. The number of uncorrelated sources of particle production is found to increase linearly with multiplicity, suggesting no saturation of the number of multi-parton interactions even in the highest multiplicity p-Pb collisions.     Medicinal service supply by wild plants in Samburu, Kenya: Comparisons among medicinal plant assemblages

    Supply of medicinal plants from African landscapes is crucial because of their widespread use. Rapid climate change and land use change are potential threats to this resource but knowledge about the ecological needs of many of these plants is still rather limited. More knowledge about potential threats to medicinal plants supply and options to prevent future losses are desirable. Therefore, the objectives of the study were to examine (1) the effects of environmental drivers on the occurrence of medicinal plant species, (2) how different vegetation formations contribute to the provision of plants used for the treatment of diseases and (3) how these contributions are secured by redundancy. The analysis was based on a sample of 130 sampling plots in Samburu County, Kenya. We identified patterns in medicinal plants co-occurrences using classification and ordination analyses and analyzed these pattern in terms of environmental drivers, service diversity and service security. The pattern in medicinal plants co-occurrences reflected the distribution of broad formations (bushed grassland, forest, wooded grassland, savanna) driven by differences in grazing pressure, drought, slope and fraction of sand in soils. Each of the formations brought with it its own characteristic endowment with medicinal plants. The formations differed in the diversity and security of medicinal services provided. All resulted as fulfilling unique services with diseases treated by plants occurring exclusively in one or another formation. Forests featured the highest diversity of medicinal services, with medicinal plants used against 67 diseases. The supply security in forests, resulting from redundancy in supply provision, was moderate. In contrast to this, savanna grasslands featured plants with uses against 49 diseases, some of them were treated exclusively by plants from savanna grasslands. This formation also showed the highest redundancy. Wooded grasslands showed very little redundancy and is likely to be adversely affected by climate change. Whereas savannas feature the largest pool of medicinal plants and should receive due attention, urgent and highest conservation priority should, presently and in future, go towards the wooded grassland that had the lowest supply redundancy for traditional medicine

    In this small note we are concerned with the solution of Forward-Backward Stochastic Differential Equations (FBSDE) with drivers that grow quadratically in the control component (quadratic growth FBSDE or qgFBSDE). The main theorem is a comparison result that allows comparing componentwise the signs of the control processes of two different qgFBSDE.     Multi-particle azimuthal correlations in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

    Measurements of multi-particle azimuthal correlations (cumulants) for charged particles in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions are presented. They help address the question of whether there is evidence for global, flow-like, azimuthal correlations in the p-Pb system. Comparisons are made to measurements from the larger Pb-Pb system, where such evidence is established. In particular, the second harmonic two-particle cumulants are found to decrease with multiplicity, characteristic of a dominance of few-particle correlations in p-Pb collisions. However, when a Δη|\Delta \eta| gap is placed to suppress such correlations, the two-particle cumulants begin to rise at high-multiplicity, indicating the presence of global azimuthal correlations. The Pb-Pb values are higher than the p-Pb values at similar multiplicities. In both systems, the second harmonic four-particle cumulants exhibit a transition from positive to negative values when the multiplicity increases. The negative values allow for a measurement of v2{4}v_{2}\{4\} to be made, which is found to be higher in Pb-Pb collisions at similar multiplicities. The second harmonic six-particle cumulants are also found to be higher in Pb-Pb collisions. In Pb-Pb collisions, we generally find v2{4}v2{6}0v_{2}\{4\} \simeq v_{2}\{6\}\neq 0 which is indicative of a Bessel-Gaussian function for the v2v_{2} distribution. For very high-multiplicity Pb-Pb collisions, we observe that the four- and six-particle cumulants become consistent with 0. Finally, third harmonic two-particle cumulants in p-Pb and Pb-Pb are measured.     Test beam performance measurements for the Phase I upgrade of the CMS pixel detector

    A new pixel detector for the CMS experiment was built in order to cope with the instantaneous luminosities anticipated for the Phase I Upgrade of the LHC. The new CMS pixel detector provides four-hit tracking with a reduced material budget as well as new cooling and powering schemes. A new front-end readout chip mitigates buffering and bandwidth limitations, and allows operation at low comparator thresholds. In this paper, comprehensive test beam studies are presented, which have been conducted to verify the design and to quantify the performance of the new detector assemblies in terms of tracking efficiency and spatial resolution. Under optimal conditions, the tracking efficiency is (99.95 ± 0.05) %, while the intrinsic spatial resolutions are (4.80 ± 0.25) μm and (7.99 ± 0.21) μm along the 100 μm and 150 μm pixel pitch, respectively. The findings are compared to a detailed Monte Carlo simulation of the pixel detector and good agreement is found.Peer reviewe

    Accurate photon echo timing by optical freezing of exciton dephasing and rephasing in quantum dots

    Semiconductor quantum dots are excellent candidates for ultrafast coherent manipulation of qubits by laser pulses on picosecond timescales or even faster. In inhomogeneous ensembles a macroscopic optical polarization decays rapidly due to dephasing, which, however, is reversible in photon echoes carrying complete information about the coherent ensemble dynamics. Control of the echo emission time is mandatory for applications. Here, we propose a concept to reach this goal. In a two-pulse photon echo sequence, we apply an additional resonant control pulse with multiple of 2π area. Depending on its arrival time, the control slows down dephasing or rephasing of the exciton ensemble during its action. We demonstrate for self-assembled (In,Ga)As quantum dots that the photon echo emission time can be retarded or advanced by up to 5 ps relative to its nominal appearance time without control. This versatile protocol may be used to obtain significantly longer temporal shifts for suitably tailored control pulses
