Ecocide, Genocide, Capitalism and Colonialism: Consequences for indigenous peoples and glocal ecosystems environments
Continuing injustices and denial of rights of indigenous peoples are part of the long legacy of colonialism. Parallel processes of exploitation and injustice can be identified in relation to non-human species and/or aspects of the natural environment. International law can address some extreme examples of the crimes and harms of colonialism through the idea and legal definition of genocide, but the intimately related notion of ecocide that applies to nature and the environment is not yet formally accepted within the body of international law. In the context of this special issue reflecting on the development of green criminology, the article argues that the concept of ecocide provides a powerful tool. To illustrate this, the article explores connections between ecocide, genocide, capitalism and colonialism and discusses impacts on indigenous peoples and on local and global (glocal) eco-systems
Equilibration of isolated macroscopic quantum systems
We investigate the equilibration of an isolated macroscopic quantum system in
the sense that deviations from a steady state become unmeasurably small for the
overwhelming majority of times within any sufficiently large time interval. The
main requirements are that the initial state, possibly far from equilibrium,
exhibits a macroscopic population of at most one energy level and that
degeneracies of energy eigenvalues and of energy gaps (differences of energy
eigenvalues) are not of exceedingly large multiplicities. Our approach closely
follows and extends recent works by Short and Farrelly [2012 New J. Phys. 14
013063], in particular going beyond the realm of finite-dimensional systems and

Effect of pulsed methylprednisolone on pain, in patients with HTLV-1-associated myelopathy
HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) is an immune mediated myelopathy caused by the human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1). The efficacy of treatments used for patients with HAM/TSP is uncertain. The aim of this study is to document the efficacy of pulsed methylprednisolone in patients with HAM/TSP. Data from an open cohort of 26 patients with HAM/TSP was retrospectively analysed. 1g IV methylprednisolone was infused on three consecutive days. The outcomes were pain, gait, urinary frequency and nocturia, a range of inflammatory markers and HTLV-1 proviral load. Treatment was well tolerated in all but one patient. Significant improvements in pain were: observed immediately, unrelated to duration of disease and maintained for three months. Improvement in gait was only seen on Day 3 of treatment. Baseline cytokine concentrations did not correlate to baseline pain or gait impairment but a decrease in tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) concentration after pulsed methylprednisolone was associated with improvements in both. Until compared with placebo, treatment with pulsed methylprednisolone should be offered to patients with HAM/TSP for the treatment of pain present despite regular analgesia
The Role of Graphlets in Viral Processes on Networks
Predicting the evolution of viral processes on networks is an important problem with applications arising in biology, the social sciences, and the study of the Internet. In existing works, mean-field analysis based upon degree distribution is used for the prediction of viral spreading across networks of different types. However, it has been shown that degree distribution alone fails to predict the behavior of viruses on some real-world networks and recent attempts have been made to use assortativity to address this shortcoming. In this paper, we show that adding assortativity does not fully explain the variance in the spread of viruses for a number of real-world networks. We propose using the graphlet frequency distribution in combination with assortativity to explain variations in the evolution of viral processes across networks with identical degree distribution. Using a data-driven approach by coupling predictive modeling with viral process simulation on real-world networks, we show that simple regression models based on graphlet frequency distribution can explain over 95% of the variance in virality on networks with the same degree distribution but different network topologies. Our results not only highlight the importance of graphlets but also identify a small collection of graphlets which may have the highest influence over the viral processes on a network
High CO2 decreases the long-term resilience of the free-living coralline algae Phymatolithon lusitanicum
Maerl/rhodolith beds are protected habitats that may be affected by ocean acidification (OA), but it is still unclear how the availability of CO2 will affect the metabolism of these organisms. Some of the inconsistencies found among OA experimental studies may be related to experimental exposure time and synergetic effects with other stressors. Here, we investigated the long-term (up to 20months) effects of OA on the production and calcification of the most common maerl species of southern Portugal, Phymatolithon lusitanicum. Both the photosynthetic and calcification rates increased with CO2 after the first 11months of the experiment, whereas respiration slightly decreased with CO2. After 20months, the pattern was reversed. Acidified algae showed lower photosynthetic and calcification rates, as well as lower accumulated growth than control algae, suggesting that a metabolic threshold was exceeded. Our results indicate that long-term exposure to high CO2 will decrease the resilience of Phymatolithon lusitanicum. Our results also show that shallow communities of these rhodoliths may be particularly at risk, while deeper rhodolith beds may become ocean acidification refuges for this biological community.Fundacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia [PTDC/MAR/115789/2009, SFRH/BD/76762/2011
Housing consumption patterns and earnings behaviour of income support recipients over time
This study being conducted by the AHURI Queensland Research Centre is concerned with the 'housing pathways', earnings patterns, and 'life circumstances' of income support recipients. The research is based on analysis of longitudinal income support data from the Australian Government. The four main themes for the research concern: The housing arrangements and circumstances of income support recipients over time The relationships between changes in tenure and changes in incomes for these households or individuals; The relationship between changes in tenure and other changes in the characteristics or circumstances of income support recipients; and How the relationships and arrangements between housing and other factors vary by discrete groups of income support recipient
