'Behind the Door':Solitary Confinement in the Irish Penal System

    Get PDF
This report contains 25 key recommendations centring on the use of solitary confinement and restricted regimes in Ireland. Our goal is ambitious but achievable – the abolition of solitary confinement in Ireland in the short term and the gradual elimination of the use of restricted regimes with the ultimate target of 12 hours out-of-cell time daily for all prisoners across the prison estate. Some of the key recommendations arising from the report include: • The placement in solitary confinement of adults with mental health difficulties or mental or physical disabilities should be prohibited. • Where a prisoner requests to be kept on protection for an extended period, this should be kept under constant review. • The Irish Prison Service should research and develop a range of initiatives to address violence in prisons. These may include, but should not be limited to, restorative justice approaches and weapons amnesties. • Prisoners on protection or other restricted regimes should be provided with meaningful access to work, training and education, as well as other activities and services. As far as possible this should be in association with other prisoners. • The Irish Prison Service should regularly collect and publish data relating to the length of time prisoners spend on restricted regimes in all prisons

Power, pain, adaptations and resistance in a 'foreign' prison: The case of Polish prisoners incarcerated in Northern Ireland.

This article presents the findings of the author's doctoral research with male Polish prisoners incarcerated in Northern Ireland. Debating the need for expanding our understanding of how the pains of confinement are experienced differentially depending on citizenship, nationality and linguistic ability, the article argues that in the case of those prisoners the exercise of prison power focused on exclusionary practices. This has had an impact on how those prisoners were able (or not) to resist the prison regime. The discussion reflects on how this exclusionary power of the prison is aided by two external forces - the UK's immigration system and Poland's criminal justice system - in maintaining 'order' and compliance

IMPLEMENTATION OF THE LQG CONTROLLER FOR A WIND TURBINE TOWER-NACELLE MODEL WITH AN MR TUNED VIBRATION ABSORBER

    Get PDF
Vibration of a wind turbine tower is related to fatigue wear, influencing reliability of the whole structure. The current paper deals with the problem of Linear-Quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) tower vibration control using specially designed and built simulation and laboratory tower-nacelle models with a horizontally aligned, magnetorheological (MR) damper based tuned vibration absorber located at the nacelle. Force excitation applied horizontally to the tower itself, or to the nacelle, is considered. The MR damper LQG control algorithm, including the Kalman state observer and LQR (Linear-Quadratic-Regulator) controller is analysed numerically and implemented on the laboratory ground, in comparison with the system with a deactivated absorber. Simulation and experimental results are presented

Building Bridges::An Independent Evaluation of Le Chéile’s Restorative Justice Project. Research Findings

The Le Chéile Justice Project in Limerick is Ireland’s only non-statutoryservice providing formal restorative justice interventions to young offenders.Established in 2010, the project co-operates closely with Young Persons’ Probation, which refers children and young people in conflict with the law to the Project. Thisarticle presents the main findings from an Evaluation and Social Return onInvestment analysis of the Project, conducted over six months in 2014 by theauthors, working under the auspices of Quality Matters. It describes the impact andoutcomes for young people, family members, victims of crime and the widercommunity, as well as making a brief comment on the Project’s cost effectiveness

Trigeminal Neuralgia - where are we today?

    Get PDF
Introduction: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is one of the most crippling facial pain syndromes, which has a significant impact on quality of life. This chronic disorder presents as brief shock-like paroxysmal severe, stabbing pain with rapid onset in the distribution of trigeminal nerve (CNV). The aim of this article was to review the recent literature about the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment methods and the important advances in all these fields.Etiology and pathomechanism: The best known and tested theory on the genesis of the trigeminal neuralgia seems to be a nerve compression at the nerve root entry-zone. However there are other theories like the trigeminal convergence-projection theory, the bioresonance hypothesis or the ignition theory that are trying to explain the etiology of TN. Treatment: Available treatment methods consist mainly of medications and surgical procedures. Surgical treatment may be divided into 2 categories: destructive and non-destructive. Among these interventions we can distinguish percutaneous rhizotomy stereotactic radiosurgery and microvascular decompression. All of them are very efficacious, however MVD is approved as the gold standard in the treatment of TN. Botulinum neurotoxin  type A injections are not the first line for treatment, but it may be an attractive alternative for classic pharmaceutical or surgical therapy, as it’s safe and effective. Acupuncture is also proposed in recent studies as a valuable treatment option, even though there is little well-designed research. Conclusion: Much remains to be learned about the diagnosis, pathomechanism and methods of treatment of neuropathic pain and the efficacy of each of them. Further evidence-based studies are needed, as the amount of reliable materials is still not sufficient and lots of them have yet to be examined

Symbole w filmie W imię… Małgorzaty Szumowskiej w perspektywie interpretacji kerygmatycznej

The kerygmatic interpretation of movies is a relatively new way of film interpretation. For the last few years it has been developing in association with the long-known interpretation of literature as a broadening of the art of interpretation by theological and religious discourse. The article explains the principles of kerygmatic interpretation. According to these rules, the author interprets Małgorzata Szumowska’s film In the name of…, whilst analyzing the films symbolism in the context of plot, literary and art allusions. In the name of… (W imię…), directed by Małgorzata Szumowska and released in 2013, has been one of the most acclaimed films of the past few years. It received, among others, Silver Lions in Gdynia, an award for the best directing and a best actor award for Andrzej Chyra, however the premiere caused much controversy. For some, the film was “anticlerical,” “one-sided,” “meager,” whilst for others it was the most interesting film at the Berlin Festival. In the article, the author also focuses on the role of the priest in the film, which seems to be a breakthrough in the portrayal of priests in modern Polish cinema. The conclusions stemming from the interpretation of the film are presented in the context of general thoughts concerning the roles of priests in Polish cinema. Małgorzaty Szumowskiej (2013) jest jednym z bardziej docenianych filmów ostatnich lat – otrzymał m.in.
