    Impacts of chronic stress on urinary bladder function & recovery through modification of PACAP signaling

    Stress can cause or contribute to bladder dysfunction though specific effects remain unclear. Individuals with interstitial cystitis (IC)/bladder pain syndrome (BPS) experience increased symptom severity with stress, including pain and increased urgency and frequency of voiding. Further research can identify stress-related changes to urinary mechanisms, such as changes in sensory neurotransmitters and subsequent receptor expression. These factors could then become targets for future therapies providing bladder dysfunction relief. Alterations in PACAP and TRPV channel expression have been shown in sensory pathways in response to disease. My research studied the effects of chronic stress on bladder function and the potential for PACAP(6-38), a PACAP antagonist, to recover normal function. Mice went through a repeated variate stress regime followed by bladder tube implant and cystometrogram recording. Bladder, dorsal root ganglia (DRG), and spinal cord tissues were collected and immunostained for the presence of TRPV1, TRPV4, and PACAP expression. Chronic stress decreased inter-contraction interval (ICI) and bladder capacity while increasing bladder pressures. Both control and stressed male and female mice showed improvement following a 30-minute intravesical infusion of PACAP(6-38), with ICI and bladder capacity measures having the most consistent improvement across groups. PACAP and TRPV1 expression was upregulated in the bladder afferent pathway. These findings suggest that chronic stress can contribute to bladder dysfunction, and it seems to be mediated in part by upregulation of PACAP and TRPV channel activity. With further research, these factors may be valid molecular targets for therapy.     Online Self-testing Resources Prepared by Peer Tutors as a Formative Assessment Tool in Pharmacology Courses

    Objective. To assess the effectiveness of optional online quizzes written by peer tutors in a pharmacology course for doctor of pharmacy students. Methods. Online quizzes were written by peer tutors for second-year pharmacy students. Quizzes reflected the material taught during lecture and were in a format similar to that of the examinations. Data related to performance on each quiz and each examination were collected throughout the semester. At the end of the semester, students and peer tutors were surveyed to gather information on the utility and success of the quizzes. Results. Students taking online quizzes performed significantly better on examinations than those who did not take quizzes. In addition, students received higher scores on examinations than when practicing with the quizzes. Surveys suggest that students liked the quizzes and felt they increased their confidence and performance on examinations. Conclusion. The quizzes were beneficial to student performance on examinations as well as student perception of performance and confidence going into the examinations. Quizzes were also beneficial learning experiences for peer tutors

    Investigation of continuously traversing microphone system for mode measurement

    The continuously Traversing Microphone System consists of a data acquisition and processing method for obtaining the modal coefficients of the discrete, coherent acoustic field in a fan inlet duct. The system would be used in fan rigs or full scale engine installations where present measurement methods, because of the excessive number of microphones and long test times required, are not feasible. The purpose of the investigation reported here was to develop a method for defining modal structure by means of a continuously traversing microphone system and to perform an evaluation of the method, based upon analytical studies and computer simulated tests. A variety of system parameters were examined, and the effects of deviations from ideal were explored. Effects of traverse speed, digitizing rate, run time, roundoff error, calibration errors, and random noise background level were determined. For constant fan operating speed, the sensitivity of the method to normal errors and deviations was determined to be acceptable. Good recovery of mode coefficients was attainable. Fluctuating fan speed conditions received special attention, and it was concluded that by employing suitable time delay procedures, satisfactory information on mode coefficients can be obtained under realistic conditions.     Relative Sizes of X-ray and Optical Images of Elliptical Galaxies; Correlation with X-ray Luminosity

    Optical parameters of elliptical galaxies are tightly correlated, but their x-ray parameters vary widely. The x-ray luminosity L_x ranges over more than an order of magnitude for ellipticals having similar optical luminosity L_B. The source of this scatter has been elusive. We show here that the dispersion in L_x for fixed optical luminosity L_B correlates strongly with the dimensionless ratio of the sizes of the x-ray and optical images, r_ex/r_e. Specifically, we find that (L_x/L_B) is proportional to (r_{ex}/r_e)^{0.60 \pm 0.30}, a version of the correlation that is independent of distance. This correlation may be a natural result of mergings and tidal truncations that are expected during the formation and early evolution of ellipticals in groups of galaxies. The radial structure of x-ray images also varies: some are compact (e.g. NGC 4649, 7626, 5044), others diffuse (e.g. NGC 4636, 1399).Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. Self‐testing, a type of formative assessment tool, provides students with a study tool that can help identify areas of weakness that require focus. Despite their usefulness, this type of additional learning resource can often be time consuming for faculty members, limiting its successful use across multiple courses. The use of peer tutors has been investigated and shown to provide advantages to both students utilizing tutoring services and tutors alike.     Time-dependent Circulation Flows: Iron Enrichment in Cooling Flows with Heated Return Flows

    We describe a new type of dynamical model for hot gas in galaxy groups and clusters in which gas moves simultaneously in both radial directions. Circulation flows are consistent with (1) the failure to observe cooling gas in X-ray spectra, (2) multiphase gas observed near the centers of these flows and (3) the accumulation of iron in the hot gas from Type Ia supernovae in the central galaxy. Dense inflowing gas cools, producing a positive central temperature gradient, as in normal cooling flows. Bubbles of hot, buoyant gas flow outward. Circulation flows eventually cool catastrophically if the outward flowing gas transports mass but no heat; to maintain the circulation both mass and energy must be supplied to the inflowing gas over a large volume, extending to the cooling radius. The rapid radial recirculation of gas produces a flat central core in the gas iron abundance, similar to many observations. We believe the circulation flows described here are the first gasdynamic, long-term evolutionary models that are in good agreement with all essential features observed in the hot gas: little or no gas cools as required by XMM spectra, the gas temperature increases outward near the center, and the gaseous iron abundance is about solar near the center and decreases outward.Comment: 17 pages (emulateapj5) with 6 figures; accepted by The Astrophysical Journa
