A retinotopic attentional trace after saccadic eye movements: evidence from event-related potentials
Saccadic eye movements are a major source of disruption to visual stability, yet we experience little of this disruption. We can keep track of the same object across multiple saccades. It is generally assumed that visual stability is due to the process of remapping, in which retinotopically organized maps are updated to compensate for the retinal shifts caused by eye movements. Recent behavioral and ERP evidence suggests that visual attention is also remapped, but that it may still leave a residual retinotopic trace immediately after a saccade. The current study was designed to further examine electrophysiological evidence for such a retinotopic trace by recording ERPs elicited by stimuli that were presented immediately after a saccade (80 msec SOA). Participants were required to maintain attention at a specific location (and to memorize this location) while making a saccadic eye movement. Immediately after the saccade, a visual stimulus was briefly presented at either the attended location (the same spatiotopic location), a location that matched the attended location retinotopically (the same retinotopic location), or one of two control locations. ERP data revealed an enhanced P1 amplitude for the stimulus presented at the retinotopically matched location, but a significant attenuation for probes presented at the original attended location. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that visuospatial attention lingers in retinotopic coordinates immediately following gaze shifts
Free-energy barrier to melting of single-chain polymer crystallite
We report Monte Carlo simulations of the melting of a single-polymer
crystallite. We find that, unlike most atomic and molecular crystals, such
crystallites can be heated appreciably above their melting temperature before
they transform to the disordered "coil" state. The surface of the superheated
crystallite is found to be disordered. The thickness of the disordered layer
increases with superheating. However, the order-disorder transition is not
gradual but sudden. Free-energy calculations reveal the presence of a large

Lattice model study of the thermodynamic interplay of polymer crystallization and liquid-liquid demixing
We report Monte Carlo simulations of a lattice-polymer model that can account
for both polymer crystallization and liquid-liquid demixing in solutions of
semiflexible homopolymers. In our model, neighboring polymer segments can have
isotropic interactions that affect demixing, and anisotropic interactions that
are responsible for freezing. However, our simulations show that the isotropic
interactions also have a noticeable effect on the freezing curve, as do the
anisotropic interactions on demixing. As the relative strength of the isotropic
interactions is reduced, the liquid-liquid demixing transition disappears below
the freezing curve. A simple, extended Flory-Huggins theory accounts quite well

Parallel graded attention in reading: A pupillometric study
There are roughly two lines of theory to account for recent evidence that word processing is influenced by adjacent orthographic information. One line assumes that multiple words can be processed simultaneously through a parallel graded distribution of visuo-spatial attention. The other line assumes that attention is strictly directed to single words, but that letter detectors are connected to both foveal and parafoveal feature detectors, as such driving parafoveal-foveal integrative effects. Putting these two accounts to the test, we build on recent research showing that the pupil responds to the brightness of covertly attended (i.e., without looking) locations in the visual field. Experiment 1 showed that foveal target word processing was facilitated by related parafoveal flanking words when these were positioned to the left and right of the target, but not when these were positioned above and below the target. Perfectly in line with this asymmetry, in Experiment 2 we found that the pupil size was contingent with the brightness of the locations of horizontally but not vertically aligned flankers, indicating that attentional resources were allocated to those words involved in the parafoveal-on-foveal effect. We conclude that orthographic parafoveal-on-foveal effects are driven by parallel graded attention
Tomographic imaging and scanning thermal microscopy: thermal impedance tomography
The application of tomographic imaging techniques developed for medical applications to the data provided by the scanning thermal microscope will give access to true three-dimensional information on the thermal properties of materials on a mm length scale. In principle, the technique involves calculating and inverting a sensitivity matrix for a uniform isotropic material, collecting ordered data at several modulation frequencies, and multiplying the inverse of the matrix with the data vector. In practice, inversion of the matrix in impractical, and a novel iterative technique is used. Examples from both simulated and real data are given

Modelling the influence of palmitic, palmitoleic, stearic and oleic acids on apparent heat resistance of spores of Bacillus cereus NTCC 11145 and Clostridium sporogenes Pasteur 79.3
International audienceHeat resistance of spores is affected by many factors such as temperature, pH, water activity (aw) and others. Previous studies have reported that free fatty acids can affect the germination and growth of bacterial spores. In this study, we investigated the influence of free fatty acids in heating medium or in recovery medium on the heat resistance of spores of Bacillus cereus NTCC 11145 and Clostridium sporogenes Pasteur 79.3. Four free fatty acids were studied: palmitic, palmitoleic, stearic and oleic acid. During thermal treatments, the impact of these FFA in heating media was generally low, but the presence of free fatty acids in the recovery medium highly decreases bacterial spore apparent heat resistance, particularly with unsaturated fatty acids. A mathematical model was developed to describe and quantify the influence of free fatty acids in recovery media on the D-values. The z'FFA parameter values which quantify the impact of free fatty acids were determined. The variation of this parameter value according to the free fatty acid type was compared with MIC value variation given in the literature. The model enables the decrease in D-values in the presence of free fatty acids to be estimated. The high concentrations of free fatty acids in liver or canned duck may explain the microbial stability with low sterilization values applied
