Effect of N and K doses in nutritive solution on growth, production and coffee bean size
An adequate supply of nutrients is essential for obtaining high yields of coffee. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of N, K and the N:K ratio on vegetative and reproductive growth of coffee. For this purpose, coffee plants were grown in nutrient solution containing K in the concentrations of 1.08; 2.15; 3.23 and 5.38 mmol L-1 combined with a dose of 6 mmol L-1 N, resulting in the N:K ratios (w/w): 1:0.5; 1:1; 1:1.5 and 1:2.5. The control treatment consisted of the doses 3 and 1.61 mmol L-1 of N and K respectively, resulting in the N:K ratio (w/w) 1.0:1.5. The following variables were evaluated: height, stem diameter, number of nodes of the eighth plagiotrofic branch (index branch), pairs of plagiotrofic branches and number of nodes in the orthotropic branch every three weeks from the beginning of the experiment. Additionally, it was evaluated the chemical composition of processed beans and leaves between the flowering and the rapid expansion stage of the cherry beans, production of cherry beans per plant and classification of beans according to the size. N influenced mainly the characteristics of vegetative growth and K influenced mainly the reproductive growth evaluated by the production. The lowest production resulted in the highest percentages of beans retained on sieves with holes larger than 16/64", while the highest production promoted an increase in the percentage of beans retained on sieves with holes smaller than 16/64"
Spatial variability in nutritional status of arabic coffee based on dris index
The combined use of precision agriculture and the Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS) allows the spatial monitoring of coffee nutrient balance to provide more balanced and cost-effective fertilizer recommendations. The objective of this work was to evaluate the spatial variability in the nutritional status of two coffee varieties using the Mean Nutritional Balance Index (NBIm) and its relationship with their respective yields. The experiment was conducted in eastern Minas Gerais in two areas, one planted with variety Catucaí and another with variety Catuaí. The NBIm of the two varieties and their yields were analyzed through geostatistics and, based on the models and parameters of the variograms, were interpolated to obtain their spatial distribution in the studied areas. Variety Catucai, with grater spatial variability, was more nutritional unbalanced than variety Catuai, and consequently produced lower yields. Excess of Fe and Mn makes these elements limiting yield factors

Comparative Study of the Physical and Chemical Characteristics of Coffee and Sensorial Analysis by Principal Components
The objective of this work is to compare properties of coffee under different post-harvest processing with its sensorial characteristics by principal component analysis (PCA) features, in order to help it, making it less subjective. Coffee fruits were harvested, and a part of them had their mucilage removed and, then, taken to the Laboratory of Physical Properties in the Federal University of Viçosa, Brazil. The coffee without mucilage was dried at temperatures of 40, 50, and 60 °C. Cherry coffee was dried at three different temperatures (40, 50 and 60 ºC); however, when subjected to 40 °C, coffee quality suffered an addition of 0, 10, 20, and 30 % of green fruits. The samples were subjected to analysis of color, electric conductivity, density, thousand grain masses, gas chromatography, and sensorial analysis in the beginning and at every 3 months of storage for 1 year. Through the PCA, it was possible to differentiate samples that were submitted to post-harvest processing. After 12 months of storage, it has been noted a similarity between groups differentiated by PCA of chemical and physical characteristics of coffee and groups differentiated by PCA of sensorial analysis. Compatibility between characterization techniques for PCA was observed, making the technique effective in helping the cup testing
