Verses of Faith and Devotion. Seeing, Reading, and Touching Monumental Crucifixes with Inscriptions (12th–13th century)

The paper discusses a group of monumental crucifixes from the 13th-century East Adriatic and Italy, pained or executed in low relief, that display a verse inscriptions on the transverse limb of the cross. The main scope of the paper is to examine the provenance of the text inscribed in order to yield clearer insight into their function, use and original location in the church interiors. The paper specifically aims at analyzing three monumental crucifixes from the East-Adriatic city of Zadar which, although have already been the subject of a respectable number of studies, have not attracted attention as objects of devotion. My interest, therefore, is turned towards verse inscription as their distinctive feature and, as I shall argue, a key aspect in understanding their function. Examining the nature of the text displayed, iconography and materiality of these crucifixes, my main argument is to demonstrate how these objects provoked a multi-faced response from their audience, since were experienced by seeing, hearing and touching respectively

Programming with a Differentiable Forth Interpreter

Given that in practice training data is scarce for all but a small set of problems, a core question is how to incorporate prior knowledge into a model. In this paper, we consider the case of prior procedural knowledge for neural networks, such as knowing how a program should traverse a sequence, but not what local actions should be performed at each step. To this end, we present an end-to-end differentiable interpreter for the programming language Forth which enables programmers to write program sketches with slots that can be filled with behaviour trained from program input-output data. We can optimise this behaviour directly through gradient descent techniques on user-specified objectives, and also integrate the program into any larger neural computation graph. We show empirically that our interpreter is able to effectively leverage different levels of prior program structure and learn complex behaviours such as sequence sorting and addition. When connected to outputs of an LSTM and trained jointly, our interpreter achieves state-of-the-art accuracy for end-to-end reasoning about quantities expressed in natural language stories.Comment: 34th International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML 2017

    Hladne pukotine u zavarenim spojevima

Control Thermal Severity) i Lehigh metoda

Metoda dokaza egzistencije rješenja i numerička metoda kojom smo dobili rezultate u zadnjem poglavlju nisu ista metoda. Stoga je cilj daljnje istraživanje usmjeriti ka implementaciji prve numeričke metode i formalnom opravdanju druge. In this thesis we introduced the poroelastic shell model of Naghdi’s type, which is the most similar to the elastic shell model described in [9, 8]. While the poroelastic shell model described in [5] captures only bending effects, the model introduced in this thesis captures membrane effects, as well. The main result in this thesis is the proof of existence and uniqueness of the system of equations. The proof of uniqueness is based on the energy method, while the proof of existence is based on iterative procedure similar to the numerical method described in [4]. At the end, we showed numerical approximation of solutions of the model in two cases interesting in application, such as car filters. The method which we used in the proof of existence of solutions and numerical method which we used to obtain numerical results are not the same method. Thus, our goal is to extend our research to implementation of the first method and justification of the second one

Partial dynamical symmetry is shown to be relevant for describing the anharmonicity of excited bands in 196^{196}Pt while retaining solvability and good SO(6) symmetry for the ground band.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, Proc.
