    Polysaccharide-based self-assembling nanohydrogels: An overview on 25-years research on pullulan

    The aim of this overview is to review the evolution of the studies carried out, during more than 25 years, on nanohydrogels obtained by self-assembling of pullulan (PUL) using several hydrophobization strategies. After the first publications, mainly devoted to the preparation and characterization of PUL nanogels, a remarkable number of studies demonstrated how wide can be the field of applications within the main topic of biopharmaceutics. Numerous hydrophilic and lipophilic drugs were entrapped in the nanogel networks, consequently PUL nanogels have been proposed as delivery systems for single drugs and for combination therapies which allowed improvements of pharmacological activities and patient compliance. Furthermore, the large amount of water content allowed loading also proteins which could maintain their native structure and properties. Stimuli-sensitive and stealth PUL nanogel formulations allowed improving the performances of antitumor drugs. These nanohydrogels have also been studied for imaging techniques and for vaccines to be administered by injection and by mucosal application. The studies on PUL nanogels are still in progress and the perspectives for future researches are also addressed

    Design of hybrid gels based on gellan-cholesterol derivative and P90G liposomes for drug depot applications

    Gels are extensively studied in the drug delivery field because of their potential benefits in therapeutics. Depot gel systems fall in this area, and the interest in their development has been focused on long-lasting, biocompatible, and resorbable delivery devices. The present work describes a new class of hybrid gels that stem from the interaction between liposomes based on P90G phospholipid and the cholesterol derivative of the polysaccharide gellan. The mechanical properties of these gels and the delivery profiles of the anti-inflammatory model drug diclofenac embedded in such systems confirmed the suitability of these hybrid gels as a good candidate for drug depot applications

    The use of IASI data to identify systematic errors in the ECMWF forecasts of temperature in the upper stratosphere

    Since data from the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) became available in 2007, a number of papers have appeared in the literature which have reported relatively large discrepancies between IASI spectra and forward calculations in the centre of the CO<sub>2</sub> Q-branch at 667 cm<sup>−1</sup>. In this paper we show that these discrepancies are primarily due to errors in the temperature profiles used in the forward calculations. In particular, we have used forecasts of temperature profiles from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) to demonstrate that, for the case study considered in this paper, these profiles are affected by systematic errors of the order of ≈10 K at the level of the stratopause. To derive the magnitude and the spatial location of the systematic errors in the temperature profile, we have carried out forward/inverse calculations for a number of clear-sky, daytime, IASI tropical soundings over the sea. The forward calculations have been performed using atmospheric state vectors which have been obtained either from the direct inversion of the IASI radiances or from space-time co-located profiles derived from radiosonde observations and from the ECMWF model. To rule out any effect due to the accuracy of the forward model, we have performed the forward calculations using two independent models. The sensitivity of the temperature biases to the variability of the CO<sub>2</sub> profile and to spectroscopy errors has also been studied

    The detection of post-monsoon tropospheric ozone variability over south Asia using IASI data

    The ozone (O<sub>3</sub>) variability over south Asia during the 2008 post-monsoon season has been assessed using measurements from the MetOP-A/IASI instrument and O<sub>3</sub> profiles retrieved with the SOftware for a Fast Retrieval of IASI Data (SOFRID). The information content study and error analyses carried out in this paper show that IASI Level 1 data can be used to retrieve tropospheric O<sub>3</sub> columns (TOC, surface-225 hPa) and UTLS columns (225–70 hPa) with errors smaller than 20%. Validation with global radiosonde O<sub>3</sub> profiles obtained during a period of 6 months show the excellent agreement between IASI and radiosonde for the UTLS with correlation coefficient <i>R</i> > 0.91 and good agreement in the troposphere with correlation coefficient <i>R</i> > 0.74. For both the UTLS and the troposphere Relative Standard Deviations (RSD) are lower than 23%. Comparison with in-situ measurements from the MOZAIC program around Hyderabad demonstrates that IASI is able to capture the TOC inter and intra-seasonal variability in central India. Nevertheless, the agreement is mitigated by the fact that the smoothing of the true O<sub>3</sub> profiles by the retrieval results in a reduction of the TOC variability detected by IASI relative to the variability observed by in situ instruments. The post-monsoon temporal variability of the vertical profile of O<sub>3</sub> around Hyderabad has been investigated with MOZAIC observations. These observations from airborne instruments show that tropospheric O<sub>3</sub> is steadily elevated during most of the studied period with the exception of two sharp drops following the crossing of tropical storms over India. Lagrangian simulations with the FLEXPART model indicate that elevated O<sub>3</sub> concentrations in the middle troposphere near Hyderabad are associated with the transport of UTLS air-masses that have followed the Subtropical Westerly Jet (SWJ) and subsided over northern India together with boundary layer polluted air-masses transported from the Indo-gangetic plain by the north-easterly trades. Low O<sub>3</sub> concentrations result from the uplift and westward transport of pristine air-masses from the marine boundary layer of the Bay of Bengal by tropical storms. In order to extend the analysis of tropospheric O<sub>3</sub> variability to the whole of south Asia, we have used IASI-SOFRID O<sub>3</sub> data. We show that IASI O<sub>3</sub> data around Hyderabad were able to capture the fast variability revealed by MOZAIC. Furthermore, their spatio-temporal coverage demonstrates that the behaviour of tropospheric O<sub>3</sub> observed near Hyderabad extended over most of central and south India and part of the Bay of Bengal. This result highlights the ability of the IASI sensor to capture fast changes in chemical composition related to dramatic tropical weather conditions

    Georeferencing of priority areas for biodiversity conservation in the region of Ecomuseum the Cerrado - GO

    O EcoMuseu do Cerrado localizado no Estado de Goiás se estende em uma superfície de 8.066 km2. Sete municípios goianos fazem parte do EcoMuseu. Pela definição do Ministério do Meio Ambiente 4.444 km2 se inserem nas áreas prioritárias para a conservação da biodiversidade nacional. A rede hidrográfica do EcoMuseu está composta por sete bacias hidrográficas. O presente estudo identificou as duas bacias hidrográficas do rio Peixe e do rio das Almas para receberem tratamento especial de gestão, uma vez que nelas ainda existe um alto percentual de área com vegetação natural pouco ou quase nada explorada. Utilizando-se de técnicas de geoprocessamento identificou-se o uso atual do solo assim como a pressão antrópica existente nessas bacias hidrográficas. As duas bacias, a do rio Peixe o do rio das Almas, localizam-se no município de Pirenópolis. _________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThe Cerrado Ecomuseum of the State of Goiás encompasses an area of 8,066 km2. Seven municipalities of the State of Goias are part of these Ecomuseum. According to the definition of the Brazilian Ministry of the Environment (MMA), 4,444 km2 fall into the priority areas for biodiversity conservation. The hydrologic network within the Cerrado Ecomuseum is composed by seven watersheds. Based on our results, we observed that two watersheds (the Peixe and Alma Rivers) should be object of special management program, since they still have high percentage of very pristine areas. We mapped the current land and analyzed the anthropogenic pressure within these two watersheds using geoprocessing techniques. These two watersheds are located within the municipality of Pirenópolis

    Guar gum/borax hydrogel: Rheological, low field NMR and release characterizations

    Guar gum (GG) and Guar gum/borax (GGb) hydrogels are studied by means of rheology, Low Field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (LF NMR) and model drug release tests. These three approaches are used to estimate the mesh size (ζ) of the polymeric network. A comparison with similar Scleroglucan systems is carried out. In the case of GGb, the rheological and Low Field NMR estimations of ζ lead to comparable results, while the drug release approach seems to underestimate ζ. Such discrepancy is attributed to the viscous effect of some polymeric chains that, although bound to the network to one end, can freely fluctuate among meshes. The viscous drag exerted by these chains slows down drug diffusion through the polymeric network. A proof for this hypothesis is given by the case of Scleroglucan gel, where the viscous contribution is not so significant and a good agreement between the rheological and release test approaches was found

    In Africa, the burden of some diseases has been a problem for centuries. The spectrum of African diseases includes allergies, infections, nutritional deficiencies, and natural disasters. Efforts made by scientists to search for possible means of disease control have been outstanding; however, in some infections, solutions are still out of reach. In disease control programs, it might be worthwhile to pay attention to the most striking diseases than merely follow a holistic approach. This short review tackles the problems of allergy and allergens in Africa as compared with other disease burdens that may suggest the need for a more balanced approach based on priority

    Investigating the association between obesity and asthma in 6- to 8-year-old Saudi children:a matched case-control study

    Background: Previous studies have demonstrated an association between obesity and asthma, but there remains considerable uncertainty about whether this reflects an underlying causal relationship. Aims: To investigate the association between obesity and asthma in pre-pubertal children and to investigate the roles of airway obstruction and atopy as possible causal mechanisms. Methods: We conducted an age- and sex-matched case–control study of 1,264 6- to 8-year-old schoolchildren with and without asthma recruited from 37 randomly selected schools in Madinah, Saudi Arabia. The body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and skin fold thickness of the 632 children with asthma were compared with those of the 632 control children without asthma. Associations between obesity and asthma, adjusted for other potential risk factors, were assessed separately in boys and girls using conditional logistic regression analysis. The possible mediating roles of atopy and airway obstruction were studied by investigating the impact of incorporating data on sensitisation to common aeroallergens and measurements of lung function. Results: BMI was associated with asthma in boys (odds ratio (OR)=1.14, 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.08–1.20; adjusted OR=1.11, 95% CI, 1.03–1.19) and girls (OR=1.37, 95% CI, 1.26–1.50; adjusted OR=1.38, 95% CI, 1.23–1.56). Adjusting for forced expiratory volume in 1 s had a negligible impact on these associations, but these were attenuated following adjustment for allergic sensitisation, particularly in girls (girls: OR=1.25; 95% CI, 0.96–1.60; boys: OR=1.09, 95% CI, 0.99–1.19). Conclusions: BMI is associated with asthma in pre-pubertal Saudi boys and girls; this effect does not appear to be mediated through respiratory obstruction, but in girls this may at least partially be mediated through increased risk of allergic sensitisation
