Translation and validation of the Brazilian version of the Cerebral Palsy Quality of Life Questionnaire for Children – child report
AbstractObjectiveTo verify the psychometric properties of the Cerebral Palsy: Quality of Life Questionnaire Children – child report (CPQol-Child) questionnaire, after it was translated and culturally adapted into Brazilian Portuguese.MethodsAfter the translation and cultural adaptation of the tool into Brazilian Portuguese, the questionnaire was answered by 65 children with cerebral palsy, aged 9–12 years. The intraclass correlation coefficient and Cronbach's alpha were used to assess the reliability and internal consistency of the tool and its validity was analyzed through the association between CPQol-Child: self-report tool and Kidscreen-10 using Pearson's correlation coefficient.ResultsInternal consistency ranged from 0.6579 to 0.8861, the intraobserver reliability from 0.405 to 0.894, and the interobserver from 0.537 to 0.937. There was a weak correlation between the participation domain and physical health of CPQol-Child: self-report tool and Kidscreen-10.ConclusionThe analysis suggests that the tool has psychometric acceptability for the Brazilian population
Cytokine gene polymorphisms in preeclampsia and eclampsia
The clinical spectrum of preeclampsia ( PE) ranges from mild hypertension to severe vasospasm associated with convulsions and multiple organ damage. the biological factors that determine the progression of PE to eclampsia ( E) are unknown. Endothelial cell activation seems related to an impaired maternal immune response. the production of cytokines, IL-10 and TGF-beta 1, is apparently suppressed, and altered IL-2/IL-10 and TNF-alpha/IL-10 ratios have been reported in preeclamptic cases. the relationship between PE and cytokine gene polymorphism has been studied, but there are few studies that include eclamptic patients. This study aimed at investigating whether polymorphisms in genes, TNF-alpha promoter (-308 G>A), IL6 promoter (-174 G>C), IFN-gamma intron 1 (+874 A>T), IL10 promoters (-1082 A>G), (-819 C>T) and (-592 C>A) and TGF-beta 1 codon 10 (+869 T>C) and codon 25 (+915 G>C) are associated with E and/or PE. Genotyping was carried out in 266 Mulatto women from the northeastern region of Brazil who were referred to a single maternity hospital: 92 with PE, 73 with E and 101 normotensive controls. the chi(2) or Fisher's exact tests were used to compare genotype frequencies. Among the six single-nucleotide polymorphisms ( SNPs) studied, we found no difference in genotype frequencies between the groups. There was a higher frequency of IFN-gamma (+874 A) in eclamptic patients in comparison with that in controls. (70.3 vs. 57.8%, respectively; P=0.02). There were no other significant differences in allelic frequencies between eclamptic, preeclamptic and control groups We found no independent association between any single SNP and PE or E risk in this population of Mulatto women from the northeastern region of Brazil. Prevalence of antibody to hantaviruses in humans and rodents in the Caribbean region of Colombia determined using Araraquara and Maciel virus antigens
We tested sera from 286 agricultural workers and 322 rodents in the department of Córdoba, northeastern Colombia, for antibodies against two hantaviruses. The sera were analysed by indirect ELISA using the lysate of Vero E6 cells infected with Maciel virus (MACV) or the N protein of Araraquara virus (ARAV) as antigens for the detection of antibodies against hantaviruses. Twenty-four human sera were IgG positive using one or both antigens. We detected anti-MACV IgG antibodies in 10 sera (3.5%) and anti-ARAV antibodies in 21 sera (7.34%). Of the 10 samples that were positive for MACV, seven (70%) were cross-reactive with ARAV; seven of the 21 ARAV-positive samples were cross-reactive with MACV. Using an ARAV IgM ELISA, two of the 24 human sera (8.4%) were positive. We captured 322 rodents, including 210 Cricetidae (181 Zygodontomys brevicauda, 28 Oligoryzomys fulvescens and 1 Oecomys trinitatis), six Heteromys anomalus (Heteromyidae), one Proechimys sp. (Echimyidae) and 105 Muridae (34 Rattus rattus and 71 Mus musculus). All rodent sera were negative for both antigens. The 8.4% detection rate of hantavirus antibodies in humans is much higher than previously found in serosurveys in North America, suggesting that rural agricultural workers in northeastern Colombia are frequently exposed to hantaviruses. Our results also indicate that tests conducted with South American hantavirus antigens could have predictive value and could represent a useful alternative for the diagnosis of hantavirus infection in Colombia

As condições de vida e saúde de pessoas acima de 50 anos com deficiência e seus cuidadores em um município paulista
As disabled people become older, they often have more complex problems, due to the difficulties of social active insertion. This study aims to characterize the socio-demographic and health conditions of people with disabilities aged 50 years and over, and their caregivers. This is a descriptive study conducted through interviews with 43 disabled elderly and 39 caregivers. It was found that people with disabilities live with a relative, 51.2% did not attend formal education, 69.8% survive of retirement, 46.5% used three or more drugs and 69.8% did not do Pap smear / breast or prostate preventive screening. Among caregivers, 79.5% were female, 84.7% have little or no schooling, were sibling or nephew, have been caregivers for ten years or more, do not get help from other relatives and do not have regular leisure activity. Among them, 18% reported three or more health problems and 44% use three or more drugs. Disabled people over 50 exhibit some characteristics similar to other elderly dependents, but their condition of dependency is long lasting, which requires special health actions both for elderly and caregivers.
Reduction in Learning Rates Associated with Anterograde Interference Results from Interactions between Different Timescales in Motor Adaptation
Prior experiences can influence future actions. These experiences can not only drive adaptive changes in motor output, but they can also modulate the rate at which these adaptive changes occur. Here we studied anterograde interference in motor adaptation – the ability of a previously learned motor task (Task A) to reduce the rate of subsequently learning a different (and usually opposite) motor task (Task B). We examined the formation of the motor system's capacity for anterograde interference in the adaptive control of human reaching-arm movements by determining the amount of interference after varying durations of exposure to Task A (13, 41, 112, 230, and 369 trials). We found that the amount of anterograde interference observed in the learning of Task B increased with the duration of Task A. However, this increase did not continue indefinitely; instead, the interference reached asymptote after 15–40 trials of Task A. Interestingly, we found that a recently proposed multi-rate model of motor adaptation, composed of two distinct but interacting adaptive processes, predicts several key features of the interference patterns we observed. Specifically, this computational model (without any free parameters) predicts the initial growth and leveling off of anterograde interference that we describe, as well as the asymptotic amount of interference that we observe experimentally (R2 = 0.91). Understanding the mechanisms underlying anterograde interference in motor adaptation may enable the development of improved training and rehabilitation paradigms that mitigate unwanted interference
