Which variables influence farmer adoption of genetically modified orphan crops? Measuring attitudes and intentions to adopt gm matooke banana in Uganda
Which farmers are most likely to adopt genetically modified (GM) versions of African carbohydrate staples (also known as orphan crops)? This study investigates the variables that determine attitudes and intentions to adopt matooke banana in Uganda. Participatory ranking exercises undertaken with 167 randomly selected farmers and focus groups consisting of an additional 94 farmers suggest that attitudes and potential patterns of adoption will vary significantly according to region, farm size, membership in a farmer's association, previous experience with improved varieties and visits from extension workers. This research underscores the potential differentiated impacts of the commercialization of GM crops among African farmers
The Surgical Infection Society revised guidelines on the management of intra-abdominal infection
Background: Previous evidence-based guidelines on the management of intra-abdominal infection (IAI) were published by the Surgical Infection Society (SIS) in 1992, 2002, and 2010. At the time the most recent guideline was released, the plan was to update the guideline every five years to ensure the timeliness and appropriateness of the recommendations.
Methods: Based on the previous guidelines, the task force outlined a number of topics related to the treatment of patients with IAI and then developed key questions on these various topics. All questions were approached using general and specific literature searches, focusing on articles and other information published since 2008. These publications and additional materials published before 2008 were reviewed by the task force as a whole or by individual subgroups as to relevance to individual questions. Recommendations were developed by a process of iterative consensus, with all task force members voting to accept or reject each recommendation. Grading was based on the GRADE (Grades of Recommendation Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) system; the quality of the evidence was graded as high, moderate, or weak, and the strength of the recommendation was graded as strong or weak. Review of the document was performed by members of the SIS who were not on the task force. After responses were made to all critiques, the document was approved as an official guideline of the SIS by the Executive Council.
Results: This guideline summarizes the current recommendations developed by the task force on the treatment of patients who have IAI. Evidence-based recommendations have been made regarding risk assessment in individual patients; source control; the timing, selection, and duration of antimicrobial therapy; and suggested approaches to patients who fail initial therapy. Additional recommendations related to the treatment of pediatric patients with IAI have been included.

THE EFFECT OF MOISTURE CONTENT AND COMPOSITION ON THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH AND RIGIDITY OF COB MADE FROM SOIL OF THE BRECCIA MEASURES NEAR TEIGNMOUTH, DEVON
Earth has been used as a reliable building material for many thousands of years.
Recently there has been a world wide renaissance in the use of earth as a
building material due to its architectural versatility and environmental
sustainability. However, in the United Kingdom it is regarded by the majority of
building professionals as either obsolete or a novel historical material. The
utilisation of earth as a modern building material and the repair of historic earth
building structures is retarded by the uncertainty of the knowledge of the
properties of the material.
This thesis considers earth building materials as composite materials containing
a cohesive, low compression modulus binder fraction, a high compression
modulus aggregate fraction, and a fibre fraction. The compression properties of
a building material without fibre content (cob matrix material) are described in
terms of the interaction between the binder and aggregate fractions, and
moisture and the binder fraction. The effect of the moisture content of the
material upon the compression failure mechanisms is described. Values of
compression modulus predicted by a rule of mixtures equation are compared to
experimental results for this material. The following mechanisms are proposed
to account for the apparent discrepancy between the predicted and experimental
results:
• the effect of pore size distribution and the proportions of binder and
aggregate fractions upon strain magnification within the material
• the effect of an efficiency factor, primarily dependent upon the proportion
of binder and aggregate fractions, which determines the degree to which the
potential modulus of the material is realised.
Time Domain Reflectometry is employed for repeated, real time, non destructive
measurement of the moisture content of an external cob wall. The results of
these measurements are analysed and discussed.
This thesis proposes that consideration of cob as a composite material has
developed a paradigm which will enhance the level of understanding of all earth
building materials, enabling the manipulation and accurate prediction of their
structural properties. This will be an important contribution to the realisation of
the significant sustainable qualities of earth building materials by the current
construction industry
Dickens and The Literary City:A Study of London as Stage and Protagonist in Charles Dickens` Works.
This paper seeks to discuss Charles Dickens’ literary depiction of the city of London, and its effect upon his protagonists. Dickens` London provides the vocational setting for many of his characters, affording him the chance to illustrate the hard conditions endured by the city`s working population. His characters also draw much from pantomime and theatre, often resembling stage caricatures set against the backdrop of London. However, the city is more than just a stage or setting in Dickens` texts; often presented as a great immoral hub of activity which determines the fate of those living within its environs. Many characters trapped within its confines are subjected to exploitation, whilst others are depicted as inhuman, viewing the world purely in economic terms of profit and loss. This paper will also discuss how Dickens employs rural surroundings as a favourable counterpoint to that of London, whilst examining how on many occasions the contamination which the city precipitates proves too strong for Dickens` characters to evade. Finally this paper will conclude with an examination of Dickens proffered remedy; moralistic characters who attempt to aid or rejuvenate those contaminated by the ills of the city
Diglossia and Language Legitimacy:Examining how divergences in languages function as discourses of power.
It is the intention of this paper to pursue the argument that diglossia exists as a tool of control which can restrict the access of lower language status speakers to global discourse. Starting with Bakhtin’s definition of language as heteroglot, this paper will proceed with an analysis of Fergusson’s diglossia, and attempts will be made to analyze what diglossia is, and how it leads to conflict between high status and dialectical language users. English’s role as a high status language is also examined, and it is argued that English, whilst offering opportunity and emancipation for some language learners, can also operate as a barrier to progress for others. This paper will then pursue the argument that, due to the relationship between English and economic market forces, English ultimately bestows the most advantages and power upon language users from native speaker countries, and in doing so threatens to marginalize the position of other languages. Finally this discussion will conclude by looking at what can be done to avoid the exclusion of other languages and language users from access to global voice
The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Selected Galaxy Clusters at 148 GHz from Three Seasons of Data
[Abridged] We present a catalog of 68 galaxy clusters, of which 19 are new
discoveries, detected via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZ) at 148 GHz in the
Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) survey of 504 square degrees on the celestial
equator. A subsample of 48 clusters within the 270 square degree region
overlapping SDSS Stripe 82 is estimated to be 90% complete for M_500c > 4.5e14
Msun and 0.15 < z < 0.8. While matched filters are used to detect the clusters,
the sample is studied further through a "Profile Based Amplitude Analysis"
using a single filter at a fixed \theta_500 = 5.9' angular scale. This new
approach takes advantage of the "Universal Pressure Profile" (UPP) to fix the
relationship between the cluster characteristic size (R_500) and the integrated
Compton parameter (Y_500). The UPP scalings are found to be nearly identical to
an adiabatic model, while a model incorporating non-thermal pressure better
matches dynamical mass measurements and masses from the South Pole Telescope. A
high signal to noise ratio subsample of 15 ACT clusters is used to obtain
cosmological constraints. We first confirm that constraints from SZ data are
limited by uncertainty in the scaling relation parameters rather than sample
size or measurement uncertainty. We next add in seven clusters from the ACT
Southern survey, including their dynamical mass measurements based on galaxy
velocity dispersions. In combination with WMAP7 these data simultaneously
constrain the scaling relation and cosmological parameters, yielding \sigma_8 =
0.829 \pm 0.024 and \Omega_m = 0.292 \pm 0.025. The results include
marginalization over a 15% bias in dynamical mass relative to the true halo
mass. In an extension to LCDM that incorporates non-zero neutrino mass density,
we combine our data with WMAP7+BAO+Hubble constant measurements to constrain

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Cross Correlation with Planck maps
We present the temperature power spectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background
obtained by cross-correlating maps from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT)
at 148 and 218 GHz with maps from the Planck satellite at 143 and 217 GHz, in
two overlapping regions covering 592 square degrees. We find excellent
agreement between the two datasets at both frequencies, quantified using the
variance of the residuals between the ACT power spectra and the ACTxPlanck
cross-spectra. We use these cross-correlations to calibrate the ACT data at 148
and 218 GHz, to 0.7% and 2% precision respectively. We find no evidence for
anisotropy in the calibration parameter. We compare the Planck 353 GHz power
spectrum with the measured amplitudes of dust and cosmic infrared background
(CIB) of ACT data at 148 and 218 GHz. We also compare planet and point source

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Data Characterization and Map Making
We present a description of the data reduction and mapmaking pipeline used
for the 2008 observing season of the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). The
data presented here at 148 GHz represent 12% of the 90 TB collected by ACT from
2007 to 2010. In 2008 we observed for 136 days, producing a total of 1423 hours
of data (11 TB for the 148 GHz band only), with a daily average of 10.5 hours
of observation. From these, 1085 hours were devoted to a 850 deg^2 stripe (11.2
hours by 9.1 deg) centered on a declination of -52.7 deg, while 175 hours were
devoted to a 280 deg^2 stripe (4.5 hours by 4.8 deg) centered at the celestial
equator. We discuss sources of statistical and systematic noise, calibration,
telescope pointing, and data selection. Out of 1260 survey hours and 1024
detectors per array, 816 hours and 593 effective detectors remain after data
selection for this frequency band, yielding a 38% survey efficiency. The total
sensitivity in 2008, determined from the noise level between 5 Hz and 20 Hz in
the time-ordered data stream (TOD), is 32 micro-Kelvin sqrt{s} in CMB units.
Atmospheric brightness fluctuations constitute the main contaminant in the data
and dominate the detector noise covariance at low frequencies in the TOD. The
maps were made by solving the least-squares problem using the Preconditioned
Conjugate Gradient method, incorporating the details of the detector and noise
correlations. Cross-correlation with WMAP sky maps, as well as analysis from
simulations, reveal that our maps are unbiased at multipoles ell > 300. This
paper accompanies the public release of the 148 GHz southern stripe maps from
2008. The techniques described here will be applied to future maps and data

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Two-Season ACTPol Spectra and Parameters
We present the temperature and polarization angular power spectra measured by
the Atacama Cosmology Telescope Polarimeter (ACTPol). We analyze night-time
data collected during 2013-14 using two detector arrays at 149 GHz, from 548
deg of sky on the celestial equator. We use these spectra, and the spectra
measured with the MBAC camera on ACT from 2008-10, in combination with Planck
and WMAP data to estimate cosmological parameters from the temperature,
polarization, and temperature-polarization cross-correlations. We find the new
ACTPol data to be consistent with the LCDM model. The ACTPol
temperature-polarization cross-spectrum now provides stronger constraints on
multiple parameters than the ACTPol temperature spectrum, including the baryon
density, the acoustic peak angular scale, and the derived Hubble constant.
Adding the new data to planck temperature data tightens the limits on damping
tail parameters, for example reducing the joint uncertainty on the number of
neutrino species and the primordial helium fraction by 20%.Comment: 23 pages, 25 figure
Mutations in Known Monogenic High Bone Mass Loci Only Explain a Small Proportion of High Bone Mass Cases.
High bone mass (HBM) can be an incidental clinical finding; however, monogenic HBM disorders (eg, LRP5 or SOST mutations) are rare. We aimed to determine to what extent HBM is explained by mutations in known HBM genes. A total of 258 unrelated HBM cases were identified from a review of 335,115 DXA scans from 13 UK centers. Cases were assessed clinically and underwent sequencing of known anabolic HBM loci: LRP5 (exons 2, 3, 4), LRP4 (exons 25, 26), SOST (exons 1, 2, and the van Buchem's disease [VBD] 52-kb intronic deletion 3'). Family members were assessed for HBM segregation with identified variants. Three-dimensional protein models were constructed for identified variants. Two novel missense LRP5 HBM mutations ([c.518C>T; p.Thr173Met], [c.796C>T; p.Arg266Cys]) were identified, plus three previously reported missense LRP5 mutations ([c.593A>G; p.Asn198Ser], [c.724G>A; p.Ala242Thr], [c.266A>G; p.Gln89Arg]), associated with HBM in 11 adults from seven families. Individuals with LRP5 HBM (∼prevalence 5/100,000) displayed a variable phenotype of skeletal dysplasia with increased trabecular BMD and cortical thickness on HRpQCT, and gynoid fat mass accumulation on DXA, compared with both non-LRP5 HBM and controls. One mostly asymptomatic woman carried a novel heterozygous nonsense SOST mutation (c.530C>A; p.Ser177X) predicted to prematurely truncate sclerostin. Protein modeling suggests the severity of the LRP5-HBM phenotype corresponds to the degree of protein disruption and the consequent effect on SOST-LRP5 binding. We predict p.Asn198Ser and p.Ala242Thr directly disrupt SOST binding; both correspond to severe HBM phenotypes (BMD Z-scores +3.1 to +12.2, inability to float). Less disruptive structural alterations predicted from p.Arg266Cys, p.Thr173Met, and p.Gln89Arg were associated with less severe phenotypes (Z-scores +2.4 to +6.2, ability to float). In conclusion, although mutations in known HBM loci may be asymptomatic, they only account for a very small proportion (∼3%) of HBM individuals, suggesting the great majority are explained by either unknown monogenic causes or polygenic inheritance.This study was supported by The Wellcome Trust and NIHR CRN (portfolio number 5163).
