Logic in the Tractatus
I present a reconstruction of the logical system of the Tractatus, which differs from classical logic in two ways. It includes an account of Wittgenstein’s “form-series” device, which suffices to express some effectively generated countably infinite disjunctions. And its attendant notion of structure is relativized to the fixed underlying universe of what is named.
There follow three results. First, the class of concepts definable in the system is closed under finitary induction. Second, if the universe of objects is countably infinite, then the property of being a tautology is \Pi^1_1-complete. But third, it is only granted the assumption of countability that the class of tautologies is \Sigma_1-definable in set theory.
Wittgenstein famously urges that logical relationships must show themselves in the structure of signs. He also urges that the size of the universe cannot be prejudged. The results of this paper indicate that there is no single way in which logical relationships could be held to make themselves manifest in signs, which does not prejudge the number of objects
Entanglement of mechanical oscillators coupled to a non-equilibrium environment
Recent experiments aim at cooling nanomechanical resonators to the ground
state by coupling them to non-equilibrium environments in order to observe
quantum effects such as entanglement. This raises the general question of how
such environments affect entanglement. Here we show that there is an optimal
dissipation strength for which the entanglement between two coupled oscillators
is maximized. Our results are established with the help of a general framework
of exact quantum Langevin equations valid for arbitrary bath spectra, in and
out of equilibrium. We point out why the commonly employed Lindblad approach
fails to give even a qualitatively correct picture
Galactic emission at 19 GHz
We cross-correlate a 19 GHz full sky Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) survey
with other maps to quantify the foreground contribution. Correlations are
detected with the Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE) 240, 140 and
100 micron maps at high latitudes (|b|>30degrees), and marginal correlations
are detected with the Haslam 408 MHz and the Reich & Reich 1420 MHz synchrotron
maps. The former agree well with extrapolations from higher frequencies probed
by the COBE DMR and Saskatoon experiments and are consistent with both
free-free and rotating dust grain emission.Comment: 4 pages, with 4 figures included. Accepted for publication in ApJL.

Expression of SMARCD1 interacts with age in association with asthma control on inhaled corticosteroid therapy.
BackgroundGlobal gene expression levels are known to be highly dependent upon gross demographic features including age, yet identification of age-related genomic indicators has yet to be comprehensively undertaken in a disease and treatment-specific context.MethodsWe used gene expression data from CD4+ lymphocytes in the Asthma BioRepository for Integrative Genomic Exploration (Asthma BRIDGE), an open-access collection of subjects participating in genetic studies of asthma with available gene expression data. Replication population participants were Puerto Rico islanders recruited as part of the ongoing Genes environments & Admixture in Latino Americans (GALA II), who provided nasal brushings for transcript sequencing. The main outcome measure was chronic asthma control as derived by questionnaires. Genomic associations were performed using regression of chronic asthma control score on gene expression with age in years as a covariate, including a multiplicative interaction term for gene expression times age.ResultsThe SMARCD1 gene (SWI/SNF-related matrix-associated actin-dependent regulator of chromatin subfamily D member 1) interacted with age to influence chronic asthma control on inhaled corticosteroids, with a doubling of expression leading to an increase of 1.3 units of chronic asthma control per year (95% CI [0.86, 1.74], p = 6 × 10- 9), suggesting worsening asthma control with increasing age. This result replicated in GALA II (p = 3.8 × 10- 8). Cellular assays confirmed the role of SMARCD1 in glucocorticoid response in airway epithelial cells.ConclusionFocusing on age-dependent factors may help identify novel indicators of asthma medication response. Age appears to modulate the effect of SMARCD1 on asthma control with inhaled corticosteroids
Gemini Planet Imager Observational Calibrations VI: Photometric and Spectroscopic Calibration for the Integral Field Spectrograph
The Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) is a new facility instrument for the Gemini
Observatory designed to provide direct detection and characterization of
planets and debris disks around stars in the solar neighborhood. In addition to
its extreme adaptive optics and corona graphic systems which give access to
high angular resolution and high-contrast imaging capabilities, GPI contains an
integral field spectrograph providing low resolution spectroscopy across five
bands between 0.95 and 2.5 m. This paper describes the sequence of
processing steps required for the spectro-photometric calibration of GPI
science data, and the necessary calibration files. Based on calibration
observations of the white dwarf HD 8049B we estimate that the systematic error
in spectra extracted from GPI observations is less than 5%. The flux ratio of
the occulted star and fiducial satellite spots within coronagraphic GPI
observations, required to estimate the magnitude difference between a target
and any resolved companions, was measured in the -band to be in laboratory measurements and using
on-sky observations. Laboratory measurements for the , , and
filters are also presented. The total throughput of GPI, Gemini South and the
atmosphere of the Earth was also measured in each photometric passband, with a
typical throughput in -band of 18% in the non-coronagraphic mode, with some
variation observed over the six-month period for which observations were
available. We also report ongoing development and improvement of the data cube

TASK Glove
The purpose of this project is to design a glove that can interact with many different surfaces as if they were touch screens. The finished product will be useful for a host of applications. In an academic context, it will allow professors to scroll and click on projector screens during lectures and presentations. Further applications include any context in which the use of a computer may be enhanced by touch screen capabilities.
The glove includes: an Arduino Nano, three flex sensors, a pressure sensor, battery, and IR emitter. The flex sensors generate resistance data for hand gesture detection that is communicated via bluetooth low energy to a computer. A camera detects the IR emitter’s light to determine hand location. The camera capture undergoes a filtering process for this purpose. An application will provide a simple UI with calibration instructions. It will also translate and execute gesture commands
