Identity, environment and mental wellbeing in the veterinary profession
Mental health and career dissatisfaction are of increasing concern to the veterinary profession. The influence of identity on the psychological wellbeing of veterinarians has not been widely explored. Twelve recent veterinary graduates were enrolled in a private social media discussion group, and their identities investigated through narrative inquiry: a methodology which enables identity priorities to be extrapolated from stories of experience. Two distinct variants of the veterinary identity were identified: an academic, ‘diagnosis-focused’ identity, which prioritised definitive diagnosis and best-evidence treatment; and a broader ‘challenge-focused’ identity, where priorities additionally included engaging with the client, challenging environment or veterinary business. Contextual challenges (such as a client with limited finances or difficult interpersonal interactions) were seen as a source of frustration for those with a diagnosis-focused identity, as they obstructed the realisation of identity goals. Overcoming these challenges provided satisfaction to those with a challenge-focused identity. The employment environment of the graduates (general veterinary practice) provided more opportunities for those with a challenge-focused identity to realise identity goals, and more markers of emotional wellbeing were apparent in their stories. Markers of poor emotional health were evident in the stories of those with a diagnosis-focused identity
A three-dimensional multidimensional gas-kinetic scheme for the Navier-Stokes equations under gravitational fields
This paper extends the gas-kinetic scheme for one-dimensional inviscid
shallow water equations (J. Comput. Phys. 178 (2002), pp. 533-562) to
multidimensional gas dynamic equations under gravitational fields. Four
important issues in the construction of a well-balanced scheme for gas dynamic
equations are addressed. First, the inclusion of the gravitational source term
into the flux function is necessary. Second, to achieve second-order accuracy
of a well-balanced scheme, the Chapman-Enskog expansion of the Boltzmann
equation with the inclusion of the external force term is used. Third, to avoid
artificial heating in an isolated system under a gravitational field, the
source term treatment inside each cell has to be evaluated consistently with
the flux evaluation at the cell interface. Fourth, the multidimensional
approach with the inclusion of tangential gradients in two-dimensional and
three-dimensional cases becomes important in order to maintain the accuracy of
the scheme. Many numerical examples are used to validate the above issues,
which include the comparison between the solutions from the current scheme and
the Strang splitting method. The methodology developed in this paper can also
be applied to other systems, such as semi-conductor device simulations under
electric fields.Comment: The name of first author was misspelled as C.T.Tian in the published

Could cities feed themselves? The case of the urban agriculture movement in Cuba = 城市能否自给自足? 古巴城市农业运动调查报告
Before 1990 the production and market of vegetables in Cuba was monopolized by a large state enterprise where horticultural techniques such as hydroponics and zeoponics are used (in zeolite subtract) with heavy use of chemical products. But, in 1991 due to the Collapse of Soviet Socialist System in Eastern Europe, the Cuban agriculture enters into crisis. Without chemicals pesticides and fertilizers, metal containers, and cement, the hydroponic-zeolite technology could not be used anymore. In this context, the Movement of Urban Agriculture was born in which people produce fresh vegetables intensively applying agro-ecological principles and Organic techniques, consume and directly sell the produce. The Word Health Organization (WHO) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) recommend eating ≥400 g per day of fruits and vegetables (not counting potatoes and other starchy tubers such as cassava). In 1998 the Program produced 75% of the fresh vegetables consumed in the country, that represented 215 grams day per person, and in 2002 it produced 2360.1 tons that represented 576 g day per person. In 2011 the Cuban Urban agriculture produced 1 million 93 mill tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables. First of all, this impact brings a new perspective to urban reliance opposing a global trend that rural population feeds urban population. Precisely, the main objective of this paper is to show how the Urban Agriculture Movement in Cuba has been successful through developing its potentials to feed its population sustainably. Economically, urban agriculture production permits also production of seeds that the island could start to rely on local production, and at the same time, reduce expenditure by use of biological pest control and organic fertilizers, as much 39 million USD in a year. It is also avoids turning garbage dump into organic gardens in order to reduce pollution in the cities. Finally, this movement constitutes a new source of job opportunities and income to the urban population. The recent International Forum on statement on Nutrition Security of Urban Populations that was celebrated in September 2012, in Naples, Italy, declared that Urban agriculture should be contributed to food availability, food security and nutrition of urban and rural dwellers. It is clear as well, that by using space in cities to grow fruit and vegetables, the ecological footprint could be reduce. The Cuban Urban and Suburban Movement offer facts and arguments to support this hope. The data and facts are collected through continuous investigation and field research in the past five years, and they are discussed in length in book written by the authors: Unfinished Puzzle, Cuban Agriculture: The challenges, lessons and opportunities, edited by Food First, Print in Canada, 2012.
A Student’s Perspective Of Scamper Technique Used For Multimedia Asset Creation
The purpose of this paper was to investigate the effectiveness of SCAMPER technique based on students’ perspective. SCAMPER is an abbreviation of a seven-step idea generation technique which consists of Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Magnify, Modify, Put to another use, Eliminate and Rearrange. Creating a multimedia asset can be a challenge especially when the students are required to produce in a short time of period given. Hence this idea generation technique is introduced to the students to enhance their creativity and speed in their asset creation. This study used a qualitative approach to better understand the difficulties students faced and the effectiveness of SCAMPER technique in creating assets for design and multimedia production. The multimedia assets that the students created is not limited only to video, audio, graphic design, text or 3D models but could be a combination of any of the mentioned medium (Wang, et al, 2012)
Rosette‐like structures in the spectrum of spitzoid tumors
Background Spitz nevi demonstrate a diverse spectrum of morphologies. Recently, there have been two reported examples of Spitz nevi with rosette‐like structures similar to Homer‐Wright rosettes. Rosettes have also been described in melanomas and in a proliferative nodule arising in a congenital nevus. Methods A retrospective review of 104 cases of Spitz nevi and variants (n = 51), pigmented spindle cell nevi (n = 26), combined melanocytic nevi with features of Spitz (n = 8), atypical Spitz tumor ( AST , n = 9), and spitzoid melanoma (n = 10). Results Rosette‐like structures were present in 3 of the 104 cases (2.9%), including a compound Spitz nevus, a desmoplastic Spitz nevus, and an AST . All three cases demonstrated several foci of small nests of epithelioid cells with peripherally palisaded nuclei arranged around a central area of fibrillar eosinophilic cytoplasm. Immunohistochemical staining of the three spitzoid lesions demonstrated that the rosette‐like structures express S100 protein, Melan‐A, and neuron specific enolase ( NSE ) and lacked expression of neurofilament, glial fibrillary acidic protein and synaptophysin. Conclusions While uncommon, rosette‐like structures can occur as a focal feature in Spitz nevi and AST . Rosette‐like structures may represent a normal morphologic finding in Spitz nevi, and awareness of them may prevent misdiagnosis as a neural tumor or melanoma.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/99651/1/cup12192.pd
A review of conventional and emerging process technologies for the recovery of helium from natural gas
Helium is a unique gas with a wide range of important medical, scientific and industrial applications based on helium's extremely low boiling temperature, inert and non-flammable nature and small molecular size. The only practical sources of helium are from certain natural gas (NG) fields. As world demand for helium rapidly increases, the value of NG fields that contain it even in very small amounts is likely to rise significantly if the helium can be recovered efficiently. However, recovering the helium from the NG using conventional cryogenic distillation processes is expensive and energy intensive. We review the scope for improving the efficiency of the conventional helium recovery and upgrade processes, and evaluate the potential of emerging technologies based on adsorption or membrane separations for helium upgrade and purification. Helium recovery and purification processes are comparable in many ways with systems designed for hydrogen purification and thus, many of recent technological advances for H-2 separation from CH4, N-2 and CO2 may be applicable to a helium recovery process. Furthermore, some recent patents and pilot plant studies indicate there exist several opportunities for the development of advanced materials, such as helium-selective adsorbents, and optimized process operations for the recovery of helium from NG

Factors associated with uptake of influenza vaccine in people aged 50 to 64 years in Hong Kong: a case-control study.
BACKGROUND: In Hong Kong, people aged 50-64 years were added as a recommended priority group (recommended group) for influenza vaccination by the Department of Health (DH) starting from 2011/12 onwards. The coverage rate of influenza vaccination for this age group was suboptimal at 8.5 % in 2012/13. This study investigates the factors associated with the uptake of influenza vaccination among adults in Hong Kong aged 50-64 years. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted in communities by street intercept interviews from 17 July to 15 August 2013. Cases were adults aged 50-64 years who had received the influenza vaccine in 2011/12 or 2012/13, while controls were the same as the cases, except they had not received the influenza vaccine in 2011/12 or 2012/13. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed on the data to explore the associations between vaccination status and the variables. RESULTS: Six hundred and four respondents in total were interviewed and included in the analysis. There were 193 cases (vaccinated) and 411 controls (non-vaccinated), with a case-to-control ratio of 1:2.1. The following were strongly associated with vaccination compared to other factors: 'eligible for free government vaccine' (OR6.38, 95 % CI, 3.43-11.87, p 80 %) were willing to be vaccinated if it was free. CONCLUSIONS: Factors related to free and convenient vaccination, the perception of the severity of symptoms when contracting influenza had a comparatively strong association with influenza vaccination uptake amongst 50-64 year olds, compared to other factors
Arresting rampant dental caries with silver diamine fluoride in a young teenager suffering from chronic oral graft versus host disease post-bone marrow transplantation: a case report
BACKGROUND: Rampant caries is an advanced and severe dental disease that affects multiple teeth. This case describes the management of rampant caries in a young teenager suffering from chronic oral graft versus host disease after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. CASE PRESENTATION: A 14-year-old Chinese boy suffering from β–thalassemia major was referred to the dental clinic for the management of rampant dental caries. An oral examination revealed pale conjunctiva, bruising of lips, and depapillation of tongue indicating an underlying condition of anemia. The poor oral condition due to topical and systemic immunosuppressants was seriously aggravated, and rampant caries developed rapidly, affecting all newly erupted, permanent teeth. The teeth were hypersensitive and halitosis was apparent. Strategies for oral health education and diet modification were given to the patient. Xylitol chewing gum was used to stimulate saliva flow to promote remineralization of teeth. Silver diamine fluoride was topically applied to arrest rampant caries and to relieve pain from hypersensitivity. Carious teeth with pulpal involvement were endodontically treated. Stainless steel crowns were provided on molars to restore chewing function, and polycarbonate crowns were placed on premolars, upper canines and incisors. CONCLUSION: This case report demonstrates success in treating a young teenager with severe rampant dental decay by contemporary caries control and preventive strategy
