    Market size, competition, and the product mix of exporters

    We build a theoretical model of multi-product firms that highlights how competition across market destinations affects both a firm's exported product range and product mix. We show how tougher competition in an export market induces a firm to skew its export sales towards its best performing products. We find very strong confirmation of this competitive effect for French exporters across export market destinations. Theoretically, this within firm change in product mix driven by the trading environment has important repercussions on firm productivity. A calibrated fit to our theoretical model reveals that these productivity effects are potentially quite large

    Partial (13)C isotopic enrichment of nucleoside monophosphates: useful reporters for NMR structural studies

    Analysis of the (13)C isotopic labeling patterns of nucleoside monophosphates (NMPs) extracted from Escherichia coli grown in a mixture of C-1 and C-2 glucose is presented. By comparing our results to previous observations on amino acids grown in similar media, we have been able to rationalize the labeling pattern based on the well-known biochemistry of nucleotide biosynthesis. Except for a few notable absences of label (C4 in purines and C3′ in ribose) and one highly enriched site (C1′ in ribose), most carbons are randomly enriched at a low level (an average of 13%). These sparsely labeled NMPs give less complex NMR spectra than their fully isotopically labeled analogs due to the elimination of most (13)C–(13)C scalar couplings. The spectral simplicity is particularly advantageous when working in ordered systems, as illustrated with guanosine diphosphate (GDP) bound to ADP ribosylation factor 1 (ARF1) aligned in a liquid crystalline medium. In this system, the absence of scalar couplings and additional long-range dipolar couplings significantly enhances signal to noise and resolution

    Advanced space system concepts and their orbital support needs (1980 - 2000). Volume 1: Executive summary

    The likely system concepts which might be representative of NASA and DoD space programs in the 1980-2000 time period were studied along with the programs' likely needs for major space transportation vehicles, orbital support vehicles, and technology developments which could be shared by the military and civilian space establishments in that time period. Such needs could then be used by NASA as an input in determining the nature of its long-range development plan. The approach used was to develop a list of possible space system concepts (initiatives) in parallel with a list of needs based on consideration of the likely environments and goals of the future. The two lists thus obtained represented what could be done, regardless of need; and what should be done, regardless of capability, respectively. A set of development program plans for space application concepts was then assembled, matching needs against capabilities, and the requirements of the space concepts for support vehicles, transportation, and technology were extracted. The process was pursued in parallel for likely military and civilian programs, and the common support needs thus identified

    Understanding carotenoid losses in orange-fleshed sweet potato in drying and storage

    Biofortified orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) is being promoted to tackle vitamin A deficiency, a serious public health problem affecting children and pregnant/lactating women in sub-Saharan Africa. The aim of the study was to quantify and understand the factors influencing provitamin A losses in OFSP dried chips. Losses were determined after drying and storage. A preliminary pilot-scale study demonstrated that carotenoid levels were not significantly different after either solar or sun drying. Field conditions using locally-promoted varieties in Uganda and Mozambique showed losses associated with drying were less than 40%. Flour made from OFSP could therefore be a significant source of provitamin A. In contrast, storage of chips at room temperature in Uganda for four months resulted in high losses of pro-vitamin A (ca. 70% loss from the initial dried product). Low-cost pretreatments, such as blanching, antioxidants and salting, did not improve carotenoid retention during storage. To understand the cause of the losses, dried sweet potato chips were stored under controlled conditions of temperature (10; 20; 30; or 40ºC), aw (0.1; 0.3; 0.5 or 0.7) and oxygen (0 [under nitrogen]; 2.5; 10 or 21% [air]). Losses in provitamin A were the least during storage at the lowest temperature and oxygen level and at the highest humidity level. Enzymatic catabolism of [bêta]-carotene in the flour was considered unlikely because of low peroxidase activities at low water activities and the loss of peroxidase activity during storage.     Cooperativity Beyond Caging: Generalized Mode Coupling Theory

    The validity of mode coupling theory (MCT) is restricted by an uncontrolled factorization approximation of density correlations. The factorization can be delayed and ultimately avoided, however, by explicitly including higher order correlations. We explore this approach within a microscopically motivated schematic model. Analytic tractability allows us to discuss in great detail the impact of factorization at arbitrary order, including the limit of avoided factorization. Our results indicate a coherent picture for the capabilities as well as limitations of MCT. Moreover, including higher order correlations systematically defers the transition and ultimately restores ergodicity. Power-law divergence of the relaxation time is then replaced by continuous but exponential growth.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
