Payday Lending in Missouri: Leading the Nation in Predatory Lending
Payday lending is commonly considered to be predatory lending. Practices typically involve high interest rates, excessive fees, deceptive and aggressive marketing, and a general lack of concern for a borrower's ability to repay. Missouri has a high concentration of payday lending businesses throughout the state, in both rural and urban areas, and the Missouri legislature and government leaders must remain ever vigilant in regulating payday lenders in this state
Gay fathers' coparenting experiences with ex-wives
"December 2014."Dissertation Supervisor: Dr. Marilyn Coleman.Includes vita.Despite the increasing focus on fathers and coparenting after divorce, little is known about the experiences of gay fathers and virtually nothing is known about their experiences coparenting with their ex-wives. This study examines the post-divorce coparenting experiences of fathers who had children in the context of a heterosexual marriage and later identified as gay. I conducted a grounded theory study of 16 gay fathers who generally described their coparenting experiences as either mostly cooperative or mostly uncooperative. The most salient distinction between the two types of coparenting was father’s perceptions of their ex-wives’ acceptance of their sexuality. When ex-wives accepted them as gay men and good fathers, coparenting was described as cooperative. When ex-wives expressed religiously-based homonegativity, the fathers described coparenting as uncooperative, and they also reported more adversarial divorce proceedings, more intense anger, and less ability of their ex-wives to move on post-divorce.Includes bibliographical references (pages 60-67)
New Kadampa Buddhists and Jungian psychological type
Building on previous studies on Canadian Anglicans and Catholics, this study examines and discusses the psychological type profile of 31 adherents to New Kadampa Buddhism. Like Anglicans and Catholics, Buddhists preferred introversion (I). Like Anglicans who preferred intuition (N) and unlike Catholics who preferred sensing (S), Buddhists displayed a preference for intuition (N). Unlike Anglicans and Catholics who both preferred feeling (F), Buddhists displayed a balance between feeling (F) and thinking (T). Like Anglicans and unlike Catholics, Buddhists preferred the Apollonian temperament (NF) over the Epimethean temperament (SJ). These data are discussed to interpret the psychological appeal of New Kadampa Buddhism
Do the acute biochemical and neuromuscular responses justify the classification of strength- and hypertrophy-type resistance exercise?
This study aimed to examine a wide profile of acute biochemical and neuromuscular responses to strength (STR) and hypertrophy (HYP) resistance exercise (RE). Seven trained men completed an STR workout (4 × 6 repetitions, 85% 1 repetition maximum [1RM], 5-minute rest periods), an HYP workout (4 × 10 repetitions, 70% 1RM, 90-second rest periods), and a control condition (CON) in a randomized crossover design. Peak force (PF), rate of force development (RFD), and muscle activity were quantified before and after exercise during an isometric squat protocol. Blood samples were taken 20, 10, and 0 minutes before and 0, 10, and 60 minutes after exercise to measure the concentration of blood lactate (BL), pH, and a number of electrolytes that were corrected for plasma volume changes. No differences were observed between the workouts for changes in PF, RFD, or muscle activity. Repeated contrasts revealed a greater (p ≤ 0.05) increase in BL concentration and reduction in pH after the HYP protocol than the STR or CON conditions. There were similar but significant (p ≤ 0.05) changes in the concentration of a number of electrolytes after both workouts, and a handful of these changes displayed significant correlations with the PF reductions observed after the HYP condition. Although the STR and HYP workouts were significantly different in terms of intensity, volume, and rest, these differences were only observable in the acid-base responses. The present findings reinforce the need for practitioners to look beyond the classification of RE workouts when aiming to elicit specific physiological responses

Assessment Of Prediabetes Testing Practices Among Primary Care Providers In Mississippi
Prediabetes is a condition in which a person has impaired glucose metabolism; however, his or her glucose levels do not meet criteria for the diagnosis of diabetes (ADA, 2019). Prediabetes is associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease (ADA, 2019). Early diagnosis and treatment of prediabetes, including lifestyle interventions and medical management, are vital in preventing prediabetes from progressing to diabetes. The review of current literature indicates that prediabetes testing is not being properly utilized in primary care settings. The purpose of this study was to determine if primary care providers (PCPs) were performing prediabetes A1C screenings for patients 18 and older who were overweight, obese, or had a BMI that was 25 or greater, as well as one or more additional risk factors for prediabetes; the study also included patients who were 45 or greater without further risk factors. The intention was to bring awareness of the proper guidelines required of PCPs in testing patients for prediabetes. It is the obligation of PCPs to test asymptomatic patients who are at risk of developing prediabetes or diabetes mellitus (ADA, 2019). Primary care providers can use this information to increase their knowledge and practice of performing appropriate testing on overweight and obese patients
Six Months Under The Yankee Guns In The Nursery Of Disunion: Charleston, South Carolina
From August 21, 1863 to February 18, 1865 Charleston, South Carolina was under bombardment from heavy Federal Batteries located on Morris Island. The Federal Army had landed on Morris in July of 1863 and was attempting to bring about the surrender of Charleston. The bombardment of the historic city was undertaken either to bring about the surrender of the city that saw the firing of the opening shots of the American Civil War or to lay Charleston in ruins. The purpose of this study was to write the accounts of the damage done to the city by the shelling of the first six months

The neuromuscular, biochemical, and endocrine responses to a single-session vs. double-session training day in elite athletes
Purpose:
The aim of this study was to compare the acute neuromuscular, biochemical, and endocrine responses of a
training day consisting of a speed session only to performing a speed and weight training session on the same day.
Methods:
Fifteen male academy level rugby players completed two
protocols in a randomized order. The speed only protocol
involved performing 6 maximal effort repetitions of 50m running sprints with 5 minutes recovery between each sprint, while the speed and weights protocol involved the same
sprinting session but was followed 2h post by a lower body weights session consisting of 4 sets of 5 back squat and Romanian deadlift at 85% 1RM. Testosterone, cortisol, creatine kinase, lactate, and perceived muscle soreness were
determined immediately before, immediately after, 2h post,
and 24h post both protocols. Peak power, relative peak power, jump height, and average rate of force development
were determined from a counter movement jump (CMJ) at
the same time points.
Results:
At 24h post, muscle soreness was significantly higher
following the speed and weights protocol compared to speed only protocol (effect size eta2= .253, F=4.750, p < 0.05).
There was no significant difference between any of the CMJ variables at any of the post training time points. Likewise creatine kinase, testosterone, and cortisol were unaffected by the addition of a weight training session.
Conclusion:
These data indicate that the addition of a weight training
session 2h post a speed session, while increasing the perception of fatigue the following day, does not result in a difference in endocrine response or in neuromuscular capability
Praying at the Table, Praying at the Font
For 2,000 years, one central component of Lord’s Supper and baptism liturgies has been compelling doxological prayers modeled in part after the pattern of the psalms and Jewish prayers of thanksgiving. But for Protestants who are a bit allergic to pre-written or set prayers, these symphonic doxological prayers may seem unusual or strange. Come to this session to explore with four worship teachers from four Protestant traditions some insights and learning about introducing or re-introducing robust prayers of thanksgiving at the font and the table in ways that can also introduce children and new believers to the grand metanarrative of the gospel
