Ice directional indicators were compiled from extensive field mapping and air-photo interpretation in the Keewatin region of central Nunavut. The profusion of multi-faceted bedrock outcrops, intersecting striations, superimposed streamlined landforms, and stacked till units, particularly beneath the former Keewatin Ice Divide, is interpreted to be the result of the migration of the main ice divide in the region, by as much as 500 km between ice-flow phases, possibly through much of the Wisconsinan glaciation. This palimpsest glacial landscape reflects protection under an ice divide because of low-velocity basal sliding, and changes in flow velocity as a result of shifting ice flow centres. Relative ages of regional ice-flow sets were used to reconstruct multiple phases of paleo-ice flows, stemming from ice centres external to the region prior to or at LGM, and from a local ice divide throughout deglaciation. This work refutes previous interpretations of the age and stability of the Keewatin Ice Divide, and has implications for interpreting glacial dispersal trains and for mineral exploration in Keewatin.

Factors Affecting the Adoption of Faculty-Developed Academic Software: A Study of Five iCampus Projects

Instruction in higher education must adapt more rapidly to: changes in workforce needs, global issues, advances in disciplines, and resource constraints. The pace of such improvement depends on the speed with which new ideas and materials are adopted across institutions. In 1999 Microsoft pledged $25 million and staff support for iCampus, a seven-year MIT project to develop pioneering uses of educational technology. The TLT Group studied five iCampus projects in order to identify factors affecting institutionalization and widespread dissemination. Among the factors impeding adoption: lack of rewards and support for faculty to adopt innovations; faculty isolation; and a lack of attention to adoption issues among projects selected for funding. The study made recommendations for universities, foundations, government agencies and corporations: 1) continue making education more authentic, active, collaborative, and feedback-rich; 2) create demand to adopt ideas and materials from other sources by encouraging all faculty members to improve and document learning in their programs, year after year; 3) nurture coalitions for instructional improvement, across and within institutions; 4) create more effective higher education corporate alliances; and 5) improve institutional services to support faculty in educational design, software development, assessment methods, formative evaluation, and/or in sharing ideas with others who teach comparable courses

Trajectories of childhood neighbourhood cohesion and adolescent mental health: evidence from a national Canadian cohort.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to examine associations between trajectories of childhood neighbourhood social cohesion and adolescent mental health and behaviour. METHOD: This study used data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth, a nationally representative sample of Canadian children. The sample included 5577 children aged 0-3 years in 1994-1995, prospectively followed until age 12-15 years. Parental perceived neighbourhood cohesion was assessed every 2 years. Latent growth class modelling was used to identify trajectories of neighbourhood cohesion. Mental health and behavioural outcomes were self-reported at age 12-15 years. Logistic regression was used to examine associations between neighbourhood cohesion trajectories and outcomes, adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS: Five distinct trajectories were identified: 'stable low' (4.2%); 'moderate increasing' (9.1%); 'stable moderate' (68.5%); 'high falling' (8.9%); and 'stable high' (9.3%). Relative to those living in stable moderately cohesive neighbourhoods, those in stable low cohesive neighbourhoods were more likely to experience symptoms of anxiety/depression [odds ratio (OR) = 1.73, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.04-2.90] and engage in indirect aggression (OR = 1.62, 95% CI 1.07-2.45). Those with improvements in neighbourhood cohesion had significantly lower odds of hyperactivity (OR = 0.67, 95% CI 0.46-0.98) and indirect aggression (OR = 0.69, 95% CI 0.49-0.96). In contrast, those with a decline in neighbourhood cohesion had increased odds of hyperactivity (OR = 1.67, 95% CI 1.21-2.29). Those in highly cohesive neighbourhoods in early childhood were more likely to engage in prosocial behaviour ('high falling': OR = 1.93, 95% CI 1.38-2.69; 'stable high': OR = 1.89, 95% CI 1.35-2.63). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that neighbourhood cohesion in childhood may have time-sensitive effects on several domains of adolescent mental health and behaviour

    University Tuition Fee Policy Tools

    Get PDF
The two main priorities of a liberal state’s tuition policy are accessibility and equality: accessibility for all qualified students; and equality among publicly funded universities. This article analyses the policy tools that the state can use to directly or indirectly control tuition fees to best address accessibility. The article discusses the regulatory, economic and informational tuition policy tools used around the world and discusses their application in Ontario, Australia and England, based on each jurisdiction’s history and existing funding model for higher education. The article concludes with an analysis of the current trends in tuition fee policy tools

    Western Coal: Energy vs Agriculture

    Get PDF
Development of western coal by strip mining uses land now in agricultural production, but the amount so used is not large relative to the total land resource. The cost of reclaiming mined land is substantially higher than the value of agricultural benefits, but other benefits, not measured, help offset costs

Representing translation in a documentary about one of the world’s most translated songs: ‘Translatedness’ in Peter Miller’s The Internationale (2000)

This paper analyses ‘translatedness’ – representations of translation and the ways and extent to which the act of translation are made explicit – in the short documentary The Internationale (2000). How is translation represented in a film about one of the world’s most widely translated and disseminated songs? Drawing inspiration from film narratology, it first examines the auditive and visual meaning-making resources at work in the documentary, keying in on how these combine in complex ways to render translatedness and give it meaning. Four representation types emerge from the analysis: translation as music; translation as a result (rather than as a prerequisite) of worldwide dissemination; (non)translation and multilingual choruses; and cultural translation. These inform a discussion of the ideological implications of a documentary narrative that acknowledges the pivotal role of translation in the song’s international dissemination but ultimately portrays (re)translation into English as the best way to revive its change potential and redeem it from past misuses. This seeming Anglocentrism sits somewhat uneasily alongside the song’s long and varied translation history and its past ideological investments

Vegetative propagation of acanthus: physiological-anatomical studies in regeneration

The present work, while dealing with the origin of the regenerated organs, pursues the subject further and following the developmental anatomical features of these members subsequent to their initiation, shows how their internal construction is influenced in the first place by the internal organisation of the parent axis from which they arise, and secondly (in the case of roots) by the external environmental conditions in which they are produced. That the normal ontogenetic processes of an organ have/an influence on its regenerative phenomena is shown, especially in the case of leaf propagation, and in view of such a fact it has been found necessary to describe in some detail the differentiation of tissues occurring in the root and shoot as they pass from their embryonic condition to the attainment of maturity. These previously mentioned papers have shown how remarkably plastic this plant is when considered from the viewpoint of vegetative propagation; the present paper shows an equally remarkable plasticity in internal tissue organisation, and as the facts emerge it becomes very suggestive that the two sets of phenomena cannot be considered apart. Lastly, several points encountered during the investigation of leaf propagation suggested that an interesting comparison might be made between the anatomical changes occurring therein and the anatomy of the seedling. Accordingly, seedlings were raised, and as these exhibit some points of interest other than those for which they were originally intended, a fuller account of their development is given than was originally considered necessary
