Genetic Requirements for Intra-Chromosomal Deletions
Chromosomal deletions are one of the most dangerous types of DNA damage and often arise as a result of inappropriately repaired DNA double strand breaks (DSB). These breaks are usually formed either in an induced manner from exogenous damage such as radiation, or more commonly caused from spontaneous replication errors. If there is a single strand break during replication and it is not repaired properly, as the replication fork progresses it can lead to the formation of a DSB. When there is a DSB present, there is the opportunity for a chromosomal deletion to occur. If the break is in between non-tandem direct repeats, the DNA repair machinery will degrade what is between the direct repeats through a process called Single Strand Annealing (SSA). This massive loss of DNA is what is known as a chromosomal deletion. Using an assay that in Schizosaccharomyces pombe, we can detect DSBs and determine DNA repair pathways through a selection screen of yeast cells with inactivated DNA repair genes. We generated an in vivo assay that reports exclusively SSA. We validated the assay by showing its dependence on rad52+ and independence rad51+. However, we show that earlier events epistatic to rad52+ and rad51+ have differential requirements for deletions vs. other forms of repair. The Ethical Basis for Veganism
This chapter examines the ethical case that can be mounted for veganism. Because there has been comparatively little discussion in ethics focused directly on veganism, the central aim of this chapter is threefold: to orient readers to (some of) the most important philosophical literature relevant to the topic, to provide a clear explanation of the current state of the ethical case for veganism, and to focus attention on the most important outstanding or underexplored questions in this domain. The chapter examines the range of positions that deserve to be called ethical veganism, and some of the types of reasons that philosophers can potentially appeal to in arguing for veganism. It then spells out the core of the most promising case for veganism, which argues directly for the wrongness of making animals suffer and die. The chapter then considers three ways of arguing from this conclusion to an
ethical defense of the vegan lifestyle, which appeal respectively to the ethical
significance of the effects of individual use of animal products, of group efficacy, and of complicity with wrongdoing. The chapter concludes by examining several neglected complications facing the ethical case for veganism

A Rule Set for the Future
This volume, Digital Young, Innovation, and the Unexpected, identifies core issues concerning how young people's use of digital media may lead to various innovations and unexpected outcomes. The essays collected here examine how youth can function as drivers for technological change while simultaneously recognizing that technologies are embedded in larger social systems, including the family, schools, commercial culture, and peer groups. A broad range of topics are taken up, including issues of access and equity; of media panics and cultural anxieties; of citizenship, consumerism, and labor; of policy, privacy, and IP; of new modes of media literacy and learning; and of shifting notions of the public/private divide. The introduction also details six maxims to guide future research and inquiry in the field of digital media and learning. These maxims are "Remember History," "Consider Context," "Make the Future (Hands-on)," "Broaden Participation," "Foster Literacies," and "Learn to Toggle." They form a kind of flexible rule set for investigations into the innovative uses and unexpected outcomes now emerging or soon anticipated from young people's engagements with digital media

This paper seeks to illustrate how the use of Internet resources (specifically email and the Web) can affect and enhance language learning and cultural understanding, modify the learning environment, reduce the barriers which time, space and societal differences may create, be a source of motivation, and redefine the role of teachers and learners. Although it is based on an on‐going project, it already provides practical evidence of some advantages email and Internet resources can bring to the language learner and to the teacher. A detailed evaluation of the language outcomes is under way, but incomplete at the time of writing. This paper is nevertheless more concerned with other variables of language learning and teaching which the author considers fundamental to reach a successful degree of language use
