Serum metabolomics profiles in response to n-3 fatty acids in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes: a double-blind randomised controlled trial.
We aimed to investigate the change of serum metabolomics in response to n-3 fatty acid supplements in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). In a double-blind parallel randomised controlled trial, 59 Chinese T2D patients were randomised to receive either fish oil (FO), flaxseed oil (FSO) or corn oil capsules (CO, served as a control group) and followed up for 180 days. An additional 17 healthy non-T2D participants were recruited at baseline for cross-sectional comparison between cases and non-cases. A total of 296 serum metabolites were measured among healthy controls and T2D patients before and after the intervention. Serum 3-carboxy-4-methyl-5-propyl-2-furanpropanoate (CMPF) (P-interaction = 1.8 × 10(-7)) was the most significant metabolite identified by repeated-measures ANOVA, followed by eicosapentaenoate (P-interaction = 4.6 × 10(-6)), 1-eicosapentaenoylglycerophosphocholine (P-interaction = 3.4 × 10(-4)), docosahexaenoate (P-interaction = 0.001), linolenate (n-3 or n-6, P-interaction = 0.005) and docosapentaenoate (n-3, P-interaction = 0.021). CMPF level was lower in T2D patients than in the healthy controls (P = 0.014) and it was significantly increased in the FO compared with CO group (P = 1.17 × 10(-7)). Furthermore, change of CMPF during the intervention was negatively correlated with change of serum triglycerides (P = 0.016). In conclusion, furan fatty acid metabolite CMPF was the strongest biomarker of fish oil intake. Effects of dimers on cooperation in the spatial prisoner's dilemma game
We investigate the evolutionary prisoner's dilemma game in structured
populations by introducing dimers, which are defined as that two players in
each dimer always hold a same strategy. We find that influences of dimers on
cooperation depend on the type of dimers and the population structure. For
those dimers in which players interact with each other, the cooperation level
increases with the number of dimers though the cooperation improvement level
depends on the type of network structures. On the other hand, the dimers, in
which there are not mutual interactions, will not do any good to the
cooperation level in a single community, but interestingly, will improve the
cooperation level in a population with two communities. We explore the
relationship between dimers and self-interactions and find that the effects of
dimers are similar to that of self-interactions. Also, we find that the dimers,
which are established over two communities in a multi-community network, act as
one type of interaction through which information between communities is
communicated by the requirement that two players in a dimer hold a same

Enhanced treatment of shale gas fracturing waste fluid through plant-microbial synergism
Embargo until February 12, 2022Cost-efficient and environmentally friendly treatment of hydraulic fracturing effluents is of great significance for the sustainable development of shale gas exploration. We investigated the synergistic effects of plant-microbial treatment of shale gas fracturing waste fluid. The results showed that illumination wavelength and temperature are direct drivers for microbial treatment effects of CODCr and BOD5, while exhibit little effects on nitrogen compounds, TDS, EC, and SS removals as well as microbial species and composition. Plant-microbial synergism could significantly enhance the removal of pollutants compared with removal efficiency without plant enhancement. Additionally, the relative abundance and structure of microorganisms in the hydraulic fracturing effluents greatly varied with the illumination wavelength and temperature under plant-microbial synergism. 201.24 g water dropwort and 435 mg/L activated sludge with illumination of 450–495 nm (blue) at 25 °C was proved as the best treatment condition for shale gas fracturing waste fluid samples, which showed the highest removal efficiency of pollutants and the lowest algal toxicity in treated hydraulic fracturing effluents. The microbial community composition (36.73% Flavobacteriia, 25.01% Gammaproteobacteria, 18.55% Bacteroidia, 9.3% Alphaproteobacteria, 4.1% Cytophagia, and 2.83% Clostridia) was also significantly different from other treatments. A Chinese Herbal Decoction, Modified Yi Guan Jian, Induces Apoptosis in Hepatic Stellate Cells through an ROS-Mediated Mitochondrial/Caspase Pathway
The Chinese herb modified Yi Guan Jian (mYGJ) is an effective regimen that is usually used in outpatients with chronic liver diseases such as fibrosis and cirrhosis. However, the mechanism for the action of mYGJ on liver fibrosis is not yet clear. In this study, we found that mYGJ induced hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) apoptosis concomitant with the downregulation of Bcl-2 expression and slight elevation of Bax level. Moreover, the reactive oxygen species (ROS) were generated in the early stages of mYGJ-induced HSCs apoptosis to facilitate calcium and cytochrome c release from the mitochondria to cytosol. Subsequently, caspase 9 and caspase 3 were activated. Furthermore, the activation of ER stress-associated caspase 12 in HSCs was also evaluated. Together, we report the first evidence-based study to demonstrate that mYGJ decoction induces HSCs apoptosis through ROS accumulation and the intrinsic apoptosis pathway. These findings provide rationale for further clinical investigation of traditional Chinese medicine recipes against liver fibrosis
The project of improving the rate of access site bleeding after femoral artery cardiac catheterization

Purpose: Access site bleeding is the most common complication after cardiac catheterization. The classic sand bag method is widely used for control of bleeding and prevention of vascular complications. It is also crucial for nurses to monitor and assess the access site after the procedure. In 2012, the incidence of access site bleeding after cardiac catheterization is 15.4% (12/91) in our intensive care unit, and all of them have the procedure via femoral artery. The aim of the project was to improve the incidence of access site bleeding after the procedure. Methods: The characteristics of nurses (n = 20) and patients (n =12) were analyzed. Half of the nurses have work experience less than three years. The average age of patient is 61 years old. Most of them were overweight (71.4%), having at least one chronic disease (e.g., heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, kidney disease, and liver disease) and taking anticoagulant medicine (78.5%). Through the situation analysis and field observation, the causes of access site bleeding were identified as follows: patient characteristics, a lack of evaluation indicators of nursing standard, inadequate professional ability and experience of novice nurses, displacement of sand bag due to longer periods of bed rest, inappropriate fixed equipment for the sand bag, and insufficient orientation program. To resolve problems such as those listed above, we created equipment with elastic material to fix the sandbag and compress the access site. The guideline and evaluation indicators of post-cardiac catheterization were also built. The novice nurses were arranged to care post-cardiac catheterization patients and were supervised by senior nurses. An educational audiovisual and in-service education supervised by a licensed cardiologist were established to enhance nurses\u27 knowledge. Results: The incidence of access site bleeding after cardiac catheterization decreased from 15.4% to 0%. Conclusion: Through implementing those strategies, the incidence of access site bleeding after cardiac catheterization significantly decreased. Also, the experience of using the elastic equipment for fixing the sandbag and compressing the access site is spread to other intensive care unit. However, considering that some of the patient characteristics are irreversible, nurses and cardiologist should carefully assess the risks factors of access site bleeding. The project could serve as a reference for clinical practice
Increases in solar conversion efficiencies of the ZrO2 nanofiber-doped TiO2 photoelectrode for dye-sensitized solar cells
In this paper, in order to improve the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells, we introduced zirconia [ZrO2] nanofibers into a mesoporous titania [TiO2] photoelectrode. The photoelectrode consists of a few weight percent of ZrO2 nanofibers and a mesoporous TiO2 powder. The mixed ZrO2 nanofibers and the mesoporous TiO2 powder possessed a larger surface area than the corresponding mesoporous TiO2 powder. The optimum ratio of the ZrO2 nanofiber was 5 wt.%. The 5 wt.% ZrO2-mixed device could get a short-circuit photocurrent density of 15.9 mA/cm2, an open-circuit photovoltage of 0.69 V, a fill factor of 0.60, and a light-to-electricity conversion efficiency of 6.5% under irradiation of AM 1.5 (100 mW/cm2)
Measurement of the mass difference and the binding energy of the hypertriton and antihypertriton
According to the CPT theorem, which states that the combined operation of
charge conjugation, parity transformation and time reversal must be conserved,
particles and their antiparticles should have the same mass and lifetime but
opposite charge and magnetic moment. Here, we test CPT symmetry in a nucleus
containing a strange quark, more specifically in the hypertriton. This
hypernucleus is the lightest one yet discovered and consists of a proton, a
neutron, and a hyperon. With data recorded by the STAR
detector{\cite{TPC,HFT,TOF}} at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, we measure
the hyperon binding energy for the hypertriton, and
find that it differs from the widely used value{\cite{B_1973}} and from
predictions{\cite{2019_weak, 1995_weak, 2002_weak, 2014_weak}}, where the
hypertriton is treated as a weakly bound system. Our results place stringent
constraints on the hyperon-nucleon interaction{\cite{Hammer2002,
STAR-antiH3L}}, and have implications for understanding neutron star interiors,
where strange matter may be present{\cite{Chatterjee2016}}. A precise
comparison of the masses of the hypertriton and the antihypertriton allows us
to test CPT symmetry in a nucleus with strangeness for the first time, and we
observe no deviation from the expected exact symmetry
