Preliminary test results of LAr prototype detector
WIMPs are a well-motivated galactic dark matter candidate. Liquid argon (LAr)
is an attractive target for the direct detection of WIMPs. The LAr prototype
detector is designed to study the technology and property of LAr detector. The
prototype detector have an active volume containing 0.65 kg of liquid argon.
The liquid nitrogen(LN) cooling system allows the temperature of liquid argon
to be maintained at the boiling point (87.8 K) with fluctuations less than 0.1
K. The prototype was calibrated with a Na source, with the light yield
1.5910.019 p.e./keV for the 511 keV gamma rays using the domestic-made

Nanocomposites of Tantalum-Based Pyrochlore and Indium Hydroxide Showing High and Stable Photocatalytic Activities for Overall Water Splitting and Carbon Dioxide Reduction
Nanocomposites of tantalum-based pyrochlore nanoparticles and indium hydroxide were prepared by a hydrothermal process for UV-driven photocatalytic reactions including overall water splitting, hydrogen production from photoreforming of methanol, and CO_2 reduction with water to produce CO. The best catalyst was more than 20 times more active than sodium tantalate in overall water splitting and 3 times more active than Degussa P25 TiO_2 in CO_2 reduction. Moreover, the catalyst was very stable while generating stoichiometric products of H_2 (or CO) and O_2 throughout long-term photocatalytic reactions. After the removal of In(OH)_3, the pyrochlore nanoparticles remained highly active for H_2 production from pure water and aqueous methanol solution. Both experimental studies and density functional theory calculations suggest that the pyrochlore nanoparticles catalyzed the water reduction to produce H2, whereas In(OH)_3 was the major active component for water oxidation to produce O_2

High reward enhances perceptual learning.
Studies of perceptual learning have revealed a great deal of plasticity in adult humans. In this study, we systematically investigated the effects and mechanisms of several forms (trial-by-trial, block, and session rewards) and levels (no, low, high, subliminal) of monetary reward on the rate, magnitude, and generalizability of perceptual learning. We found that high monetary reward can greatly promote the rate and boost the magnitude of learning and enhance performance in untrained spatial frequencies and eye without changing interocular, interlocation, and interdirection transfer indices. High reward per se made unique contributions to the enhanced learning through improved internal noise reduction. Furthermore, the effects of high reward on perceptual learning occurred in a range of perceptual tasks. The results may have major implications for the understanding of the nature of the learning rule in perceptual learning and for the use of reward to enhance perceptual learning in practical applications
The detection of globular clusters in galaxies as a data mining problem
We present an application of self-adaptive supervised learning classifiers
derived from the Machine Learning paradigm, to the identification of candidate
Globular Clusters in deep, wide-field, single band HST images. Several methods
provided by the DAME (Data Mining & Exploration) web application, were tested
and compared on the NGC1399 HST data described in Paolillo 2011. The best
results were obtained using a Multi Layer Perceptron with Quasi Newton learning
rule which achieved a classification accuracy of 98.3%, with a completeness of
97.8% and 1.6% of contamination. An extensive set of experiments revealed that
the use of accurate structural parameters (effective radius, central surface
brightness) does improve the final result, but only by 5%. It is also shown
that the method is capable to retrieve also extreme sources (for instance, very

Metabolic crosstalk: molecular links between glycogen and lipid metabolism in obesity.
Glycogen and lipids are major storage forms of energy that are tightly regulated by hormones and metabolic signals. We demonstrate that feeding mice a high-fat diet (HFD) increases hepatic glycogen due to increased expression of the glycogenic scaffolding protein PTG/R5. PTG promoter activity was increased and glycogen levels were augmented in mice and cells after activation of the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) and its downstream target SREBP1. Deletion of the PTG gene in mice prevented HFD-induced hepatic glycogen accumulation. Of note, PTG deletion also blocked hepatic steatosis in HFD-fed mice and reduced the expression of numerous lipogenic genes. Additionally, PTG deletion reduced fasting glucose and insulin levels in obese mice while improving insulin sensitivity, a result of reduced hepatic glucose output. This metabolic crosstalk was due to decreased mTORC1 and SREBP activity in PTG knockout mice or knockdown cells, suggesting a positive feedback loop in which once accumulated, glycogen stimulates the mTORC1/SREBP1 pathway to shift energy storage to lipogenesis. Together, these data reveal a previously unappreciated broad role for glycogen in the control of energy homeostasis
The Stable Association of Virion with the Triple-geneblockProtein 3-based Complex of Bamboo mosaic virus
The triple-gene-block protein 3 (TGBp3) of Bamboo mosaic virus (BaMV) is an integral endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membraneprotein which is assumed to form a membrane complex to deliver the virus intracellularly. However, the virus entity that isdelivered to plasmodesmata (PD) and its association with TGBp3-based complexes are not known. Results from chemicalextraction and partial proteolysis of TGBp3 in membrane vesicles revealed that TGBp3 has a right-side-out membranetopology; i.e., TGBp3 has its C-terminal tail exposed to the outer surface of ER. Analyses of the TGBp3-specificimmunoprecipitate of Sarkosyl-extracted TGBp3-based complex revealed that TGBp1, TGBp2, TGBp3, capsid protein (CP),replicase and viral RNA are potential constituents of virus movement complex. Substantial co-fractionation of TGBp2, TGBp3and CP, but not TGBp1, in the early eluted gel filtration fractions in which virions were detected after TGBp3-specificimmunoprecipitation suggested that the TGBp2- and TGBp3-based complex is able to stably associate with the virion. Thisnotion was confirmed by immunogold-labeling transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of the purified virions. In addition,mutational and confocal microscopy analyses revealed that TGBp3 plays a key role in virus cell-to-cell movement byenhancing the TGBp2- and TGBp3-dependent PD localization of TGBp1. Taken together, our results suggested that the cellto-cell movement of potexvirus requires stable association of the virion cargo with the TGBp2- and TGBp3-based membranecomplex and recruitment of TGBp1 to the PD by this complex
Strategies for Searching Video Content with Text Queries or Video Examples
The large number of user-generated videos uploaded on to the Internet
everyday has led to many commercial video search engines, which mainly rely on
text metadata for search. However, metadata is often lacking for user-generated
videos, thus these videos are unsearchable by current search engines.
Therefore, content-based video retrieval (CBVR) tackles this metadata-scarcity
problem by directly analyzing the visual and audio streams of each video. CBVR
encompasses multiple research topics, including low-level feature design,
feature fusion, semantic detector training and video search/reranking. We
present novel strategies in these topics to enhance CBVR in both accuracy and
speed under different query inputs, including pure textual queries and query by
video examples. Our proposed strategies have been incorporated into our
submission for the TRECVID 2014 Multimedia Event Detection evaluation, where
our system outperformed other submissions in both text queries and video
example queries, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of our proposed
approaches
