    Get PDF
This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by the Association of College and Research Libraries in College and Research Libraries in March 2021, available online: https://doi.org/10.5860/crl.82.2.142Assessing digital scholarship services offered either through academic libraries or elsewhere on campuses is important for both program development and service refinement. Digital scholarship support is influenced by fluid campus priorities and limited resources, including staffing, service models, infrastructure, and partnership opportunities available at a university. Digital scholarship support is built upon deep, ongoing relationships and there is an intrinsic need to balance these time-intensive collaborations with scalable service offerings. Therefore, typical library assessment methods do not adequately capture the sustained engagement and impacts to research support and collaboration that come from digital scholarship services. This article discusses the creation of a logic model as one approach to frame assessment of digital scholarship services in the university environment.Publisher allows immediate open acces

Building strong relationships between academic librarians and teaching faculty is paramount for promoting services and resources. While librarians face challenges ranging from new technologies to heightened expectations and fiscal difficulties, the key work remains in solid relationship building. Drawing on the experience of a group of subject librarians and teaching faculty at The Ohio State University, this study examines the qualities that help liaison librarians develop relationships with faculty and support ongoing library services. It explores how liaison librarians build opportunities for ongoing relationships and how they assess the successes or failures of those interactions. It chronicles interview findings that detail the importance of such skills as patience, expertise, follow-through, responsiveness, and individuality if librarians are to build solid relationships and fruitful collaborations. Finally, it offers some preliminary observations on the teaching faculty's understanding of the librarians' relationship-building efforts. No embargo

As information continues to evolve over time, the information literacy expectations for chemistry students also change. This article examines transformations to an undergraduate chemistry course that focuses on chemical literature and information literacy and is co-taught by a chemistry professor and a chemistry librarian. This article also describes results from assessment of both content knowledge and student perception, and discusses how the assessment was used to inform changes to the course. This type of student assessment and evaluation has not previously been examined in the delivery of required undergraduate chemistry information courses. Since this course has used in-person, online, and blended delivery methods, the article describes what students can learn from online modules, and where they need more intensive classroom instruction.Publisher allows immediate open acces

Teaching the Teachers: Building Information Literacy into the Biology Curriculum

    Get PDF
In a world that is saturated with questionable scientific information, producing information literate students should be the goal of every institution of higher learning. There are numerous studies that detail why information literacy should be integrated into the curriculum; however, there are few examples of how to do so. At James Madison University information literacy was successfully integrated into the Biology major. This presentation will include highlights from a workshop, in class presentations, and the development of an assessment instrument as well as an analysis of the overall success of this evolving partnership between librarians and teaching faculty

CIVIL RIGHTS/ANTI-DISCRIMINATION—HOW THE MASSACHUSETTS LEAD POISONING PREVENTION AND CONTROL ACT CODIFIES SYSTEMIC HOUSING DISCRIMINATION AGAINST FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN IN VIOLATION OF THE FEDERAL FAIR HOUSING ACT

    Get PDF
This Article asserts that the Massachusetts Lead Poisoning Prevention and Control Act violates the federal Fair Housing Act (FHA) by discriminating against families with children under age six. The Massachusetts Lead Law was hailed as a ground-breaking effort to prevent childhood lead poisoning when it was enacted in 1971. However, because it requires landlords to incur the costs of lead abatement only when a child under age six resides in a dwelling, it has created a profoundly discriminatory rental housing market for these families. Part I of this Article discusses the scope of the problem for families with children under age six and provides an overview of the Massachusetts Lead Law. Part II advances the argument that the Massachusetts Lead Law violates the FHA. Part III explores the problems of housing instability and homelessness caused by housing discrimination against families with young children. The Conclusion recommends that the legislature amend the Massachusetts Lead Law to avoid discriminating against families with children under age six for three reasons: (1) to eliminate the harm of systemic discrimination; (2) to fully comply with the FHA; and (3) to achieve the original goal of the statute—to end childhood lead poisoning through a housing approach that requires property owners to abate lead hazards
