    Doping of Bi2Te3 using electron irradiation

    Electron irradiation is investigated as a way to dope the topological insulator Bi2Te3. For this, p-type Bi2Te3 single crystals have been irradiated with 2.5 MeV electrons at room temperature and electrical measurements have been performed in-situ as well as ex-situ in magnetic fields up to 14 T. The defects created by irradiation act as electron donors allowing the compensation of the initial hole-type conductivity of the material as well as the conversion of the conductivity from p- to n-type. The changes in carrier concentration are investigated using Hall effect and Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations, clearly observable in the p-type samples before irradiation, but also after the irradiation-induced conversion of the conductivity to n-type. The SdH patterns observed for the magnetic field along the trigonal axis can be entirely explained assuming the contribution of only one valence and conduction band, respectively, and Zeeman-splitting of the orbital levels.Comment: Final versio

    Breastfeeding patterns and risk of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

    The risk of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) was investigated in relation to breastfeeding patterns in the Northern California Childhood Leukaemia Study. Data collected by self-administered and in-person questionnaires from biological mothers of leukaemia cases (age 0-14 years) in the period 1995-2002 were matched to birth certificate controls on date of birth, sex, Hispanic ethnic status, and maternal race. Ever compared to never breastfeeding was not associated with risk of ALL at ages 1-14 years (odds ratio=0.99; 95% CI=0.64-1.55) and ages 2-5 years (OR=1.49; 95% CI=0.83-2.65). Various measures of breastfeeding duration compared to absence of breastfeeding also had no significant effect on risk. Complimentary feeding characteristics such as type of milk/formula used and age started eating solid foods among breastfed children were not associated with ALL risk. This study provides no evidence that breastfeeding affects the occurrence of childhood ALL

    La bioaccumulation des métaux chez les mollusques peut être une conséquence de la désorption des éléments métalliques fixés sur les particules inertes ou vivantes en suspension dans l'eau qui leur servent de nourriture. Les meilleures expériences réalisées jusqu'ici semblent indiquer que les matières en suspension ont un rôle mineur dans la contamination des mollusques. Mais quelles que soient les précautions prises, les expériences ne simulent jamais parfaitement les phénomènes naturels. Aussi, nous avons choisi de reprendre cette question à l'aide d'une expérience en grand volume où le nombre de paramètres contrôlés est restreint mais où les organismes sont dans des conditions aussi proches que possible de la réalité.Au cours d'un prégrossissement expérimental, les jeunes palourdes reçoivent des quantités variables contrôlées de nourriture phytoplanctonique. La fourniture d'une nourriture plus abondante a pour conséquence d'augmenter les quantités de cuivre et de zinc et au contraire de diminuer celles de plomb contenues dans chaque individu. Elle entraîne également une diminution des concentrations en cadmium et plomb traduisant une « dilution biologique » de ces métaux. L'augmentation de la densité de la population expérimentale a un effet négatif sur les quantités de cuivre et de zinc contenues dans les individus. A âge identique, les individus les plus grands présentent des concentrations plus faibles en cuivre et zinc et plus élevées en cadmium et plomb.L'utilisation des eaux marines souterraines présente deux avantages: une production algale intense à un coût économique négligeable et la possibilité par échange thermique de réchauffer en hiver les eaux marines naturelles et ainsi de maintenir une croissance des mollusques toute l'année. L'emploi des eaux de forage n'entraîne aucun effet néfaste dans les phénomènes de bioaccumulation des métaux, du moins pour ceux étudiés ici : cadmium, cuivre, plomb et zinc.Metal bioaccumulation in bivalves may occur as a consequence of the ingestion of inert or living particles with fixed trace elements. The best experiments like those carried out by BORCHARDT (1983, 1985) concerning Cd in mussels have shown that the role suspended matter plays in the contamination of molluscs is insignificant. But, however reliable the experimental methodologies, laboratory conditions never reproduce perfectly natural phenomena. We planned therefore to restudy the problem by using a largescale experiment where the procedure was characterized by a restricted number of controlled parameters and the organisms as close as possible to the real conditions.During an experimental nursing of young carpet shells, we assessed the influence of various controlled quantifies of phytoplankton and of experimental population density on the transfer of metal from their environment to molluscs.Carpet-shell brood (Ruditapes philippinarum) was distributed in several cylindrical containers the bottom of which consisted in a sieve. Food and seawater were renewed continuously by means of an ascending current (BAUD et BACHER, 1990). Nursing assays were carried out during summer over a period of 74 days. Eight groups of carpet shells were constituted according to food supplies (0, lx, 2x and 4x of Skeletonema costatum grown upon underground seawater plus natural phytoplankton) and population density (25 000 or 50 000 individuals per experimental container). Young molluscs were fed according to a cycle of 3 h-feeding periods and 2 h-periods with no food alternately. The average concentrations of algal cells in mollusc breeding seawater were 17.5, 35 and 70.103 cells/L. This seawater was renewed at a flow rate of 3 m3/h.At the end of the nursing period, molluscs exposed to different experimental conditions were separated by using sieves of different mesh-size (6, 8 and 10 mm). Young carpet shells were purged for 36 h in order to limit the overvaluation of bioaccumulated metal levels due to ingested matter (AMIARD-TRIQUET et al., 1984; KENNEDY, 1986). In each experimental and size-related categories, 90 individuals were sampled and divided into 3 groups of 30 specimens.In these groups, soft tissues were separated from the shells and oven-dried at 80 °C for 48 h. The dry samples were powdered and three aliquot parts of about 100 mg each were digested with 1 ml of concentrated nitric acid (HNO3, Suprapur) at 95 °C for 1 h. Then the trace element analyses were performed in this solution diluted with deionized water by dame (Zn) or by flameless (Cd, Cu, Pb) atomic absorption spectrophotometry using the Zeeman effect (AMIARD et al., 1987).The influence of both food supplies and experimental population density on the dry weight of soil tissues of young carpet shells, their metal concentration and body burdens were examined by means of multi-linear regression analysis.Increasing body burdens of Cu (4) and Zn (5) and decreasing body burden of Pb (3), corresponded to more abundant food supplies. The increase of phytoplankton supplies induced a decrease of Cd (6) and Pb (7) concentrations as a consequence of a « biological dilution » of these metals. Increasing density induced a depletion of Cu (4) and Zn (5) body burdens. Among individuals of the same age, the biggest ones exhibited the lowest concentrations of Cu and Zn (8 and 9) and the highest concentrations of Cd and Pb (6 and 7).Increased food supplies induce a biological dilution of Cd and Pb in young carpet-shells. These results are in agreement with previous data concerning Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in different species (MACKAY et al., 1975; BOYDEN, 1971; PHELPS et al., 1985; BERTHET, 1986). Thus front a sanitary point of view, the use of ground seawater for algal culture is not a risk since metal concentrations in molluscs are not enhanced

    Contaminação de aflatoxinas em castanha-do-brasil com casca em sistemas extrativista e de plantio.

    Diante de problemas de contaminação por aflatoxinas enfrentados na cadeia produtiva da castanha-do-brasil, o objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar o teor de aflatoxinas em castanhas com casca em diferentes etapas dos sistemas de produção: extrativista e de plantio. A produção extrativista consiste na coleta de ouriços recém caídos das árvores e permanecidos no solo por vários dias, empilhamento na floresta, abertura e seleção de castanhas com casca, seguida de armazenamento/secagem sob ventilação durante vários meses. Contudo, no sistema de plantio somente os ouriços com menos de 5 dias no solo são coletados, em seguida são desinfectados com hipoclorito de sódio a 1% e armazenados sob ventilação até abertura e seleção das castanhas com casca. Sessenta amostras de castanha-do-brasil com casca foram coletadas diretamente ou após abertura dos ouriços na região amazônica do Brasil, provenientes da produção extrativista no Acre e do sistema de plantio no Amazonas. As aflatoxinas (B1, B2, G1, G2) foram determinadas por Cromatografia Líquida de Alto Desempenho com detector de fluorescência bem como a atividade de água (aw) nas castanhas descascadas. Nas etapas do sistema extrativista na floresta, dos 33 ouriços coletados, castanhas provenientes de um ouriço com menos de 5 dias de contato com o solo e um ouriço empilhado durante 15 dias apresentaram contaminação por AFB1 inferior a 0,1 µg/kg de matéria fresca (MF). Entretanto o nível de AFB1 variou de 0,6 a 4,4 µg/kg de MF em 3 ouriços com mais de 30 dias em contato com o solo, mais susceptíveis a serem danificados e degradados por condições climáticas e predadores da floresta amazônica. No sistema de plantio, dos 5 ouriços coletados, somente uma amostra proveniente de um ouriço com menos de 5 dias de contato com o solo apresentou contaminação por AFB1, inferior a 0,1 µg/kg de MF. Em armazém ventilado do sistema de plantio, AFB1 foi detectada com teor inferior a 0,1 µg/kg de MF em uma amostra dos 10 ouriços coletados. Todavia no sistema extrativista, os teores de aflatoxinas das castanhas com casca aumentaram e foram superiores ao regulamento europeu (10 µg/kg de MF, UE n°165/2010) ao longo do armazenamento (até 90 dias). A secagem sob ventilação durante o armazenamento não é suficientemente eficaz para atingir rapidamente uma aw inferior a 0,7, evitando o desenvolvimento de fungos aflatoxinogênicos e a produção de aflatoxinas. Resultados sugerem o ouriço como uma barreira de proteção contra estes fungos além de confirmar os estudos anteriores do projeto Safenut que indicam a etapa de secagem sob ventilação e armazenamento das castanhas com casca durante meses no sistema extrativista como etapa crítica na contaminação por aflatoxinas. Portanto, no sistema de plantio, a coleta e o armazenamento após desinfecção com hipoclorito de sódio somente dos ouriços recém caídos das árvores, mesmo por um período de dois meses, permitem evitar a contaminação das castanhas por aflatoxinas

    Environmental, maternal, and reproductive risk factors for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia in Egypt : a case-control study

    BACKGROUND\ud Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is the most common pediatric cancer. The exact cause is not known in most cases, but past epidemiological research has suggested a number of potential risk factors. This study evaluated associations between environmental and parental factors and the risk for ALL in Egyptian children to gain insight into risk factors in this developing country.\ud METHODS\ud We conducted a case-control design from May 2009 to February 2012. Cases were recruited from Children's Cancer Hospital, Egypt (CCHE). Healthy controls were randomly selected from the general population to frequency-match the cumulative group of cases by sex, age groups (<1; 1 - 5; >5 - 10; >10 years) and region of residence (Cairo metropolitan region, Nile Delta region (North), and Upper Egypt (South)). Mothers provided answers to an administered questionnaire about their environmental exposures and health history including those of the father. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using logistic regression with adjustment for covariates.\ud RESULTS\ud Two hundred ninety-nine ALL cases and 351 population-based controls frequency-matched for age group, gender and location were recruited. The risk of ALL was increased with the mother's use of medications for ovulation induction (ORadj = 2.5, 95 % CI =1.2 -5.1) and to a lesser extend with her age (ORadj = 1.8, 95 % CI = 1.1 - 2.8, for mothers ≥ 30 years old). Delivering the child by Cesarean section, was also associated with increased risk (ORadj = 2.01, 95 % CI =1.24-2.81).\ud CONCLUSIONS\ud In Egypt, the risk for childhood ALL appears to be associated with older maternal age, and certain maternal reproductive factors

    Roles of genetic polymorphisms in the folate pathway in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia evaluated by bayesian relevance and effect size analysis.

    In this study we investigated whether polymorphisms in the folate pathway influenced the risk of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) or the survival rate of the patients. For this we selected and genotyped 67 SNPs in 15 genes in the folate pathway in 543 children with ALL and 529 controls. The results were evaluated by gender adjusted logistic regression and by the Bayesian network based Bayesian multilevel analysis of relevance (BN-BMLA) methods. Bayesian structure based odds ratios for the relevant variables and interactions were also calculated. Altogether 9 SNPs in 8 genes were associated with altered susceptibility to ALL. After correction for multiple testing, two associations remained significant. The genotype distribution of the MTHFD1 rs1076991 differed significantly between the ALL and control population. Analyzing the subtypes of the disease the GG genotype increased only the risk of B-cell ALL (p = 3.52x10(-4); OR = 2.00). The GG genotype of the rs3776455 SNP in the MTRR gene was associated with a significantly reduced risk to ALL (p = 1.21x10(-3); OR = 0.55), which resulted mainly from the reduced risk to B-cell and hyperdiploid-ALL. The TC genotype of the rs9909104 SNP in the SHMT1 gene was associated with a lower survival rate comparing it to the TT genotype (80.2% vs. 88.8%; p = 0.01). The BN-BMLA confirmed the main findings of the frequentist-based analysis and showed structural interactional maps and the probabilities of the different structural association types of the relevant SNPs especially in the hyperdiploid-ALL, involving additional SNPs in genes like TYMS, DHFR and GGH. We also investigated the statistical interactions and redundancies using structural model properties. These results gave further evidence that polymorphisms in the folate pathway could influence the ALL risk and the effectiveness of the therapy. It was also shown that in gene association studies the BN-BMLA could be a useful supplementary to the traditional frequentist-based statistical method

    Characterization of Residential Pesticide Use and Chemical Formulations through Self-Report and Household Inventory: The Northern California Childhood Leukemia Study

    Background: Home and garden pesticide use has been linked to cancer and other health outcomes in numerous epidemiological studies. Exposure has generally been self-reported, so the assessment is potentially limited by recall bias and lack of information on specific chemicals. Objectives: As part of an integrated assessment of residential pesticide exposure, we identified active ingredients and described patterns of storage and use. Methods: During a home interview of 500 residentially stable households enrolled in the Northern California Childhood Leukemia Study during 2001–2006, trained interviewers inventoried residential pesticide products and queried participants about their storage and use. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency registration numbers, recorded from pesticide product labels, and pesticide chemical codes were matched to public databases to obtain information on active ingredients and chemical class. Poisson regression was used to identify independent predictors of pesticide storage. Analyses were restricted to 259 participating control households. Results: Ninety-five percent (246 of 259) of the control households stored at least one pesticide product (median, 4). Indicators of higher sociodemographic status predicted more products in storage. We identified the most common characteristics: storage areas (garage, 40%; kitchen, 20%), pests treated (ants, 33%; weeds, 20%), pesticide types (insecticides, 46%; herbicides, 24%), chemical classes (pyrethroids, 77%; botanicals, 50%), active ingredients (pyrethrins, 43%) and synergists (piperonyl butoxide, 42%). Products could contain multiple active ingredients. Conclusions: Our data on specific active ingredients and patterns of storage and use will inform future etiologic analyses of residential pesticide exposures from self-reported data, particularly among households with young children

    Impact of discontinuation of antithrombotic therapy after surgery for chronic subdural hematoma [Impact de l'interruption des antithrombotiques après traitement chirurgicale de l'hématome sous dural chronique]

    Introduction: The management of antithrombotic therapy (AT) after surgery for chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) requires taking account of the balance of risk between hemorrhage recurrence (HR) and the prophylactic thromboembolic effect (TE). The goal of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence of vascular events (VE: TE and/or HR) in the first 3 postoperative months after cSDH evacuation in patients previously treated by AT. The impact of AT resumption was also evaluated. Patients and methods: This observational prospective multicenter collaborative study (14 French neurosurgery centers) included patients with cSDH treated by AT and operated on between May 2017 and March 2018. Data collection used an e-CRF, and was principally based on an admission questionnaire and outcome/progression at 3 months. Results: In this cohort of 211 patients, VE occurred in 58 patients (27.5%): HR in 47 (22.3%), TE in 17 (8%), with mixed event in 6 cases (2%). Median overall time to onset of complications 26 days ± 31.5, and specifically 43.5 days ± 29.25 for HR. Non-resumption of AT significantly increased the relative risk of VE [OR: 4.14; 95% CI: 2.08 - 8.56; P &lt; 0.001] and especially of TE [OR: 7.5; 95% CI: 1.2 - 42; P &lt; 0.001]. The relative risk of HR was significantly increased when AT was resumed at less than 30 days (P = 0.015). Conclusion: The occurrence of VE in patients operated on for cSDH and previously treated by AT was statistically significant (27.5%). HR was the most common event (22.3%), whereas TE accounted for only the 8%, although with shorter time to onset. In order to prevent TE risk, AT should be restarted after 30 days, as HR risk is greatly decreased beyond this time
