Dynamic connectivity algorithms for Monte Carlo simulations of the random-cluster model
We review Sweeny's algorithm for Monte Carlo simulations of the random
cluster model. Straightforward implementations suffer from the problem of
computational critical slowing down, where the computational effort per edge
operation scales with a power of the system size. By using a tailored dynamic
connectivity algorithm we are able to perform all operations with a
poly-logarithmic computational effort. This approach is shown to be efficient
in keeping online connectivity information and is of use for a number of
applications also beyond cluster-update simulations, for instance in monitoring
droplet shape transitions. As the handling of the relevant data structures is
non-trivial, we provide a Python module with a full implementation for future

Semantics of Multimedia in MPEG-7
In this paper, we present the tools standardized by MPEG-7 for describing the semantics of multimedia. In particular, we focus on the abstraction model, entities, attributes and relations of MPEG-7 semantic descriptions. MPEG-7 tools can describe the semantics of specific instances of multimedia such as one image or one video segment but can also generalize these descriptions either to multiple instances of multimedia or to a set of semantic descriptions. The key components of MPEG-7 semantic descriptions are semantic entities such as objects and events, attributes of these entities such as labels and properties, and, finally, relations of these entities such as an object being the patient of an event. The descriptive power and usability of these tools has been demonstrated in numerous experiments and applications, these make them key candidates to enable intelligent applications that deal with multimedia at human levels
Quantum optical coherence can survive photon losses: a continuous-variable quantum erasure correcting code
A fundamental requirement for enabling fault-tolerant quantum information
processing is an efficient quantum error-correcting code (QECC) that robustly
protects the involved fragile quantum states from their environment. Just as
classical error-correcting codes are indispensible in today's information
technologies, it is believed that QECC will play a similarly crucial role in
tomorrow's quantum information systems. Here, we report on the first
experimental demonstration of a quantum erasure-correcting code that overcomes
the devastating effect of photon losses. Whereas {\it errors} translate, in an
information theoretic language, the noise affecting a transmission line, {\it
erasures} correspond to the in-line probabilistic loss of photons. Our quantum
code protects a four-mode entangled mesoscopic state of light against erasures,
and its associated encoding and decoding operations only require linear optics
and Gaussian resources. Since in-line attenuation is generally the strongest
limitation to quantum communication, much more than noise, such an
erasure-correcting code provides a new tool for establishing quantum optical
coherence over longer distances. We investigate two approaches for
circumventing in-line losses using this code, and demonstrate that both
approaches exhibit transmission fidelities beyond what is possible by classical

A Spectroscopic Survey of a Sample of Active M Dwarfs
A moderate resolution spectroscopic survey of Fleming's sample of 54 X-ray
selected M dwarfs with photometric distances less than 25 pc is presented.
Radial and rotation velocities have been measured by fits to the H-alpha
profiles. Radial velocities have been measured by cross correlation. Artificial
broadening of an observed spectrum has produced a relationship between H-alpha
FWHM and rotation speed, which we use to infer rotation speeds for the entire
sample by measurement of the H-alpha emission line. We find 3 ultra-fast
rotators (UFRs, vsini > 100km/s), and 8 stars with 30 < vsini < 100 km/s. The
UFRs have variable emission. Cross-correlation velocities measured for
ultra-fast rotators (UFRs) are shown to depend on rotation speed and the
filtering used. The radial velocity dispersion of the sample is 17 km/s. A new
double emission line spectroscopic binary with a period of 3.55 days has been
discovered, and another known one is in the sample. Three other objects are
suspected spectroscopic binaries, and at least six are visual doubles. The only
star in the sample observed to have significant lithium is a known TW Hya
Association member, TWA 8A. These results show that there are a number of young
(< 10^8 yr) and very young (< 10^7 yr) low mass stars in the immediate solar
neighbourhood. The H-alpha activity strength does not depend on rotation speed.
Our fast rotators are less luminous than similarly fast rotators in the
Pleiades. They are either younger than the Pleiades, or gained angular momentum

corresponding eigenfunctions are calculated by Nikiforov-Uvarov method.
Wavefunctions are expressed in terms of Jacobi polynomials. The energy
eigenvalues are calculated numerically for some values of l and n with n<5 for

Lentiviral Hematopoietic Stem Cell Gene Therapy in Patients with Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome.
iskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) is an inherited immunodeficiency caused by mutations in the
gene encoding WASP, a protein regulating the cytoskeleton. Hematopoietic stem/progenitor
cell (HSPC) transplants can be curative, but, when matched donors are unavailable, infusion of
autologous HSPCs modified ex vivo by gene therapy is an alternative approach. We used a lentiviral
vector encoding functional WASP to genetically correct HSPCs from three WAS patients and
reinfused the cells after a reduced-intensity conditioning regimen. All three patients showed
stable engraftment of WASP-expressing cells and improvements in platelet counts, immune
functions, and clinical scores. Vector integration analyses revealed highly polyclonal and
multilineage haematopoiesis resulting from the gene-corrected HSPCs. Lentiviral gene therapy
did not induce selection of integrations near oncogenes, and no aberrant clonal expansion was
observed after 20 to 32 months. Although extended clinical observation is required to establish
long-term safety, lentiviral gene therapy represents a promising treatment for WAS
The relationship between maternal education and mortality among women giving birth in health care institutions: Analysis of the cross sectional WHO Global Survey on Maternal and Perinatal Health
Background: Approximately one-third of a million women die each year from pregnancy-related conditions. Three-quarters of these deaths are considered avoidable. Millennium Development Goal five calls for a reduction in maternal mortality and the establishment of universal access to high quality reproductive health care. There is evidence of a relationship between lower levels of maternal education and higher maternal mortality. This study examines the relationship between maternal education and maternal mortality among women giving birth in health care institutions and investigates the association of maternal age, marital status, parity, institutional capacity and state-level investment in health care with these relationships.Methods: Cross-sectional information was collected on 287,035 inpatients giving birth in 373 health care institutions in 24 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, between 2004-2005 (in Africa and Latin America) and 2007-2008 (in Asia) as part of the WHO Global Survey on Maternal and Perinatal Health. Analyses investigated associations between indicators measured at the individual, institutional and country level and maternal mortality during the intrapartum period: from admission to, until discharge from, the institution where women gave birth. There were 363 maternal deaths.Results: In the adjusted models, women with no education had 2.7 times and those with between one and six years of education had twice the risk of maternal mortality of women with more than 12 years of education. Institutional capacity was not associated with maternal mortality in the adjusted model. Those not married or cohabiting had almost twice the risk of death of those who were. There was a significantly higher risk of death among those aged over 35 (compared with those aged between 20 and 25 years), those with higher numbers of previous births and lower levels of state investment in health care. There were also additional effects relating to country of residence which were not explained in the model.Conclusions: Lower levels of maternal education were associated with higher maternal mortality even amongst women able to access facilities providing intrapartum care. More attention should be given to the wider social determinants of health when devising strategies to reduce maternal mortality and to achieve the increasingly elusive MDG for maternal mortality
Using guarding net to reduce regularly discarded invertebrates in trammel net fisheries operating on seagrass meadows (Posidonia oceanica) in Izmir Bay (Eastern Aegean Sea)
Prohibition of both beach and boat seines and trawl fishery along the İzmir Bay coasts in the Aegean Sea signifies intensive usage of gillnets and trammel nets, for catching red mullet (Mullus spp.) species in particular. Trials were realized between March 2009 and February 2010 with trammel nets in the areas on the boundaries of the sea grass (Posidonia oceanica) meadows in the Bay. Guarding net (selvedge) was attached to the lead line of experimental nets (Exp1-Exp2) - 36 and 40 mm inner panel. Differences for discard amounts between control group nets (C1-C2) (having the same inner panel as the experimental nets), used by commercial fishermen, and experimental nets are 54.7% for C1-Exp1 and 62.8% for C2-Exp2 (p<0.05). Use of nets with selvedge not only reduced regularly discarded invertebrates (Hexaplex trunculus, Bolinus brandaris, Maja spp.) in the region, but also avoided net damage caused by these species
Effect of iodine incorporation on characteristic properties of cadmium telluride deposited in aqueous solution
The electrodeposition of polycrystalline I-doped CdTe was successfully performed from aqueous solutions containing cadmium nitrate (Cd(NO3)2 and tellurium oxide (TeO2). The effects of different I-doping concentrations in the electrolytic bath on the deposited CdTe layers deposited were evaluated structurally, optically, morphologically and electronically using X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, scanning electron microscopy, photoelectrochemical cell measurement and direct-current (DC) conductivity test respectively. The XRD show reduction in the (111) cubic CdTe peak intensity and the calculated crystallite size of the CdTe:I layers above 5 ppm I-doping. At I-doping of 1000 ppm of the CdTe-bath and above, the deposition of only crystalline Te due to the formation of Cd-I complexes debarring the deposition of Cd and co-deposition of CdTe in aqueous solution was observed. Morphologically, reductions in grain size were observed above 5 ppm I-doping with high pinhole density and the formation of cracks within the CdTe:I layers. For the as-deposited CdTe:I layers, conduction type remained n-type across all the explored I-doping concentration of 200 ppm. For the CdCl2 and Ga2(SO4)2+CdCl2 treated CdTe:I layers, the transition from n- to p-type conductivity was observed for the CdTe:I baths doped with 20 ppm and above due to the reduced cadmium deposition on the substrate. The highest conductivity was observed at 5 ppm I-doping of the CdTe-bath. Observations made on the CdTe:I in aqueous solution differs from the non-aqueous solvent documented in the literature.
