Firstly, the pre-1939 period in which he was a student of Schoenberg and then, on returning to Catalonia, began to establish a reputation as a composer. Secondly, and more generally on the composer's stylistic and aesthetic evolution. This latter focus includes both Gerhard's approach to serialism both harmonically and melodically as well as the pivotal role the USA was to play in his later life.     Reconsidering the rise in A-level mathematics participation

    There is growing support for making the study of mathematics to age 18 compulsory for all young people in England. This paper aims to inform this debate through new insights into historic A-level Mathematics participation trends. We analyse full-year cohorts from the Department for Education’s National Pupil Database for age-16 students from 2004-2010, a total of just over 4.5 million young people. Using a cohort-tracking approach we aim to better understand the flow of young people through upper secondary mathematics education. Earlier work identified GCSE attainment as the strongest predictor of A-Level Mathematics participation. In this paper we show that the percentage of students progressing to A-Level by GCSE grade has not changed significantly over the period in question, with some exceptions. This implies that the increase in A-level Mathematics numbers is largely explained by the growing proportion of higher GCSE grades. We discuss the implications for policy that this raises, e.g. the possible impact of making GCSE mathematics more demanding

    Patient Perspectives on Medication Assisted Therapy in Vermont

    Introduction. Medication-Assisted Therapy (MAT) for opioid addiction has dramatically increased in Vermont, supported by a novel statewide system that integrates specialty treatment centers ( Hubs ) with primary care office-based opioid therapy ( Spokes ). In 2010, Vermont had the highest per capita buprenorphine use in the US. Previous studies of patient perspectives of MAT have identified social barriers, rigid program rules, and concerns about withdrawal and relapse as common causes of treatment failure. Our goal was to elicit patient perspectives on barriers and enablers of successful MAT to further inform system refinement. Methods. An interview guide was developed based on previous literature as well as discussions with program leadership, staff and clinicians, and community stakeholders. Responses were organized using thematic content analysis with consensus across seven interviewers and two analysts. The interviews were conducted with 44 patients enrolled in MAT at two Hub sites in Burlington, VT in October 2016. Results. The median age of subjects was 34 years, 34% were employed at least part-time, and 72% were female. Half reported a mental health condition and 20% reported chronic pain. Barriers included transportation (25%), lack of stable housing, and stigma (41%). Enablers included feeling supported (82% felt well-supported; 52% felt supported by healthcare professionals). Subjects expressed high confidence in the treatment system and high self-efficacy for sobriety. Conclusions. Patients in MAT have complex medical, mental health, social, personal, and work lives.     Effects of age, length, and pattern of burial on survival of Mikania micrantha stem sections

    For many landholders in the South Pacific, weed control of Mikania micrantha Kunth is conducted by manual or mechanical means, leaving fragments on or below the ground to reshoot and grow. Effects of age, length (number of nodes), and pattern of burial on the survival of stem sections of M. micrantha were examined in the field in Viti Levu, Fiji. The experiment was arranged in a randomized factorial design, with number of nodes, age of stem sections, and pattern (depth and orientation) of stem burial as factors. Stem sections with two or three nodes had significantly greater survival (30% and 25%, respectively) than those with one node (12%). Mature stem sections had a significantly greater survival rate (31%) than young stem sections (13%) when buried in either the horizontal or the vertical position. Vertical plantings had significantly greater survival (43%) than horizontal plantings (10%), and for both orientations survival decreased with depth of burial. Only 8% of stem sections survived when cut into smaller (3 to 5 cm) sections and buried at a depth of 10 cm. This study revealed that cutting the M. micrantha stems into smaller sections

    Soliton quantization and internal symmetry

    We apply the method of collective coordinate quantization to a model of solitons in two spacetime dimensions with a global U(1)U(1) symmetry. In particular we consider the dynamics of the charged states associated with rotational excitations of the soliton in the internal space and their interactions with the quanta of the background field (mesons). By solving a system of coupled saddle-point equations we effectively sum all tree-graphs contributing to the one-point Green's function of the meson field in the background of a rotating soliton. We find that the resulting one-point function evaluated between soliton states of definite U(1)U(1) charge exhibits a pole on the meson mass shell and we extract the corresponding S-matrix element for the decay of an excited state via the emission of a single meson using the standard LSZ reduction formula. This S-matrix element has a natural interpretation in terms of an effective Lagrangian for the charged soliton states with an explicit Yukawa coupling to the meson field. We calculate the leading-order semi-classical decay width of the excited soliton states discuss the consequences of these results for the hadronic decay of the Δ\Delta resonance in the Skyrme model.Comment: 23 pages, LA-UR-93-299

    Properties of Baryons Containing a Heavy Quark in the Skyrme Model

    The properties of baryons containing one heavy quark are studied in the Skyrme model, where they are treated as bound states of a heavy meson with an SU(2)SU(2) chiral soliton. In the large NcN_c limit, the baryon spectrum is an infinite tower of degenerate states with isospin and spin of the light degrees of freedom I=s=0,1,2,I=s_\ell=0,1,2,\dots, and total spin s=\abs{s_\ell\pm1/2}. Exotic states with no quark model analogues in the large NcN_c limit are found to be unbound. The ΣcΛc\Sigma_c-\Lambda_c mass difference is computed and found to be in good agreement with experiment. The ΣcΣcπ\Sigma_c\,\Sigma_c\,\pi and ΣcΛcπ\Sigma_c\,\Lambda_c\,\pi coupling constants are calculated to leading order in NcN_c in terms of gAg_A, the axial coupling constant of the nucleon.     Performance of an Annular Linear Induction Pump with Applications to Space Nuclear Power Systems

    Results of performance testing of an annular linear induction pump are presented. The pump electromagnetically pumps liquid metal through a circuit specially designed to allow for quantification of the performance. Testing was conducted over a range of conditions, including frequencies of 33, 36, 39, and 60 Hz, liquid metal temperatures from 125 to 525 C, and input voltages from 5 to 120 V. Pump performance spanned a range of flow rates from roughly 0.16 to 5.7 L/s (2.5 to 90 gpm), and pressure head less than 1 to 90 kPa (less than 0.145 to 13 psi). The maximum efficiency measured during testing was slightly greater than 6%. The efficiency was fairly insensitive to input frequency from 33 to 39 Hz, and was markedly lower at 60 Hz. In addition, the efficiency decreased as the NaK temperature was raised. The performance of the pump operating on a variable frequency drive providing 60 Hz power compared favorably with the same pump operating on 60 Hz power drawn directly from the electrical grid
