Classification of topological symmetry groups of KnK_n

In this paper we complete the classification of topological symmetry groups for complete graphs KnK_n by characterizing which KnK_n can have a cyclic group, a dihedral group, or a subgroup of Dm×DmD_m \times D_m where mm is odd, as its topological symmetry group.Comment: 19 pages; v2 lists authors correctly on arXiv; v3 substantially revises the introductio

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy of the Bright Kuiper Belt Object 2000 EB173

    Get PDF
We have obtained a near-infrared spectrum of the bright Kuiper Belt object 2000 EB173; the spectrum appears featureless. The spectrum has a sufficient signal-to-noise ratio to rule out the 1.5 and 2.0 μm absorption from water ice even at the low level seen in the Centaur Chariklo. In addition, we can rule out a 2.3 μm absorption at the level seen in the Centaur Pholus

Longevity risks and capital markets: The 2010-2011 update

This Special Issue of Geneva Papers on Risk and Insurance - Issues and Practice contains 10 contributions to the academic literature all dealing with longevity risk and capital markets. Draft versions of the papers were presented at Longevity Six: The Sixth International Longevity Risk and Capital Markets Solutions Conference that was held in Sydney on 9-10 September 2010. It was hosted by the Australian Institute for Population Ageing Research, the Australian School of Business and the University of New South Wales. It was sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers, Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA), Coventry Capital, Swiss Re, and Institute of Actuaries of Australia.Longevity Risk; Capital Market

WSC-07: Evolving the Web Services Challenge

    Get PDF
Service-oriented architecture (SOA) is an evolving architectural paradigm where businesses can expose their capabilities as modular, network-accessible software services. By decomposing capabilities into modular services, organizations can share their offerings at multiple levels of granularity while also creating unique access points for their peer organizations. The true impact of SOA will be realized when 3rd party organizations can obtain a variety of services, on-demand, and create higher-order composite business processes. The Web Services Challenge (WSC) is a forum where academic and industry researchers can share experiences of developing tools that automate the integration of web services. In the third year (i.e. WSC-07) of the Web Services Challenge, software platforms will address several new composition challenges. Requests and results will be transmitted within SOAP messages. In addition, semantic representations will be both represented in the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) and in the Web Ontology Language (OWL). Finally, composite processes will have both sequential and concurrent branches

Learning Exact Topology of a Loopy Power Grid from Ambient Dynamics

Estimation of the operational topology of the power grid is necessary for optimal market settlement and reliable dynamic operation of the grid. This paper presents a novel framework for topology estimation for general power grids (loopy or radial) using time-series measurements of nodal voltage phase angles that arise from the swing dynamics. Our learning framework utilizes multivariate Wiener filtering to unravel the interaction between fluctuations in voltage angles at different nodes and identifies operational edges by considering the phase response of the elements of the multivariate Wiener filter. The performance of our learning framework is demonstrated through simulations on standard IEEE test cases.Comment: accepted as a short paper in ACM eEnergy 2017, Hong Kon

Self-organized dynamics and the transition to turbulence of confined active nematics

We study how confinement transforms the chaotic dynamics of bulk microtubule-based active nematics into regular spatiotemporal patterns. For weak confinements, multiple continuously nucleating and annihilating topological defects self-organize into persistent circular flows of either handedness. Increasing confinement strength leads to the emergence of distinct dynamics, in which the slow periodic nucleation of topological defects at the boundary is superimposed onto a fast procession of a pair of defects. A defect pair migrates towards the confinement core over multiple rotation cycles, while the associated nematic director field evolves from a distinct double spiral towards a nearly circularly symmetric configuration. The collapse of the defect orbits is punctuated by another boundary-localized nucleation event, that sets up long-term doubly-periodic dynamics. Comparing experimental data to a theoretical model of an active nematic, reveals that theory captures the fast procession of a pair of +12+\frac{1}{2} defects, but not the slow spiral transformation nor the periodic nucleation of defect pairs. Theory also fails to predict the emergence of circular flows in the weak confinement regime. The developed confinement methods are generalized to more complex geometries, providing a robust microfluidic platform for rationally engineering two-dimensional autonomous flows

Impact of Home Field Advantage: Analyzed Across Three Professional Sports

We examined the impact of home-field advantage in the NFL, NBA, and MLB. We defined home-field advantage as winning more than 50% of the home games. Additionally, we took into consideration how season length could act as a moderator and influence the impact of home-field advantage. We collected data from the 2015 NBA and MLB seasons and the 2015 and 2016 NFL seasons to determine statistical significance. In total, we got data from 4,141 games to analyze. We found that there is statistical significance that the home team has a better chance of winning than the away team across the NFL, NBA, and MLB. We also found that season length has a significant impact on home team winning percentage
