    Galaxy Environments in DEEP2: The Birth of the Red Sequence

    The DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey is the first project to study the distant Universe by obtaining a data set comparable in size and nature to recent generations of local surveys. Made possible by the largest ground-based optical telescopes and new instrumentation, DEEP2 was designed to measure both the properties of galaxies at z ~ 1 and their distribution in space, enabling a number of unique tests of galaxy formation and evolution. Here, we first provide an overview of the survey, including the planned second major data release scheduled for early 2007. We then present new results from DEEP2 pertaining to the relationship between galaxy properties and environment at intermediate redshift, revealing where and when typical ~L* galaxies began quenching and moved onto the red sequence in significant number.Comment: 2 pages (1 figure), for the IAU Symposium 235, Galaxies Across the Hubble Time, J.     Cocaine self-administration in the mouse: A low-cost, chronic catheter preparation

    Intravenous drug self-administration is the most valid animal model of human addiction because it allows volitional titration of the drug in the blood based on an individual’s motivational state together with the pharmacokinetic properties of the drug. Here we describe a reliable low-cost mouse self-administration catheter assembly and protocol that that can be used to assess a variety of drugs of abuse with a variety of protocols. We describe a method for intravenous catheter fabrication that allows for efficient and long-lasting intravenous drug delivery. The intravenous catheters remained intact and patent for several weeks allowing us to establish stable maintenance of cocaine acquisition. This was followed by a dose response study in the same mice.     Determinants of job satisfaction and dissatisfaction among practitioners employed in intercollegiate sport organizations

    The purpose of this study was to gain insight into factors that influence job satisfaction and dissatisfaction among intercollegiate athletics department employees. Factors influencing job satisfaction could impact one’s job performance and willingness to remain in a job. When employees are satisfied with their work, they are more likely to remain at their job and successfully complete tasks in association with the job (Kaltenbaugh, 2009; Dixon & Warner, 2010). In order to gain insight with regard to factors influencing job satisfaction, five individuals who were employed within intercollegiate athletics departments participated in this study. Four of the participants worked at NCAA Division I institutions. One participant worked at an NCAA Division II institution. Two themes responsible for feelings of satisfaction and two themes connected to feelings of dissatisfaction emerged from the interview data. The themes related to satisfaction were: (a) student development and achievement and (b) workplace relationships and environment. The themes related to dissatisfaction were: (a) personnel management and (b) financial pressures /lack of resources. Further examination of perspectives and experiences of current employees could be beneficial to those who are interested in pursuing a career in this profession. Understanding the elements that contribute to job satisfaction could help upper level management attract and retain quality employees. In addition, these findings can help individuals who possess an interest in entering the sport industry be better prepared for the challenges and circumstances they might encounter

    Occupational stress is a topic of substantial interest to organizational researchers and managers, as well as society at large. Stress arising from work conditions can be pervasive and significant in its impact on individuals, their families and organizations. There is also a widespread belief that management of job stress is a key factor for enhancing individual performance on the job, hence increasing organizational effectiveness. Sethi and Schuler 1984 outlined four major reasons why job stress and coping have become prominent issues: a concern for individual employee health and well-being; b the financial impact on organizations including days lost due to stress-related illness; c organizational effectiveness; and d legal obligations on employers to provide safe and healthy working environments

    A reassessment of Vulcanodon karibaensis Raath (Dinosauria:Saurischia) and the origin of the Sauropoda

    Vulcanadon karibaensis Raath is redescribed and figured in detail. It forms the basis of the new sauropod family Vulcanodontidae, to which the Indian Barapasaurus is also provisionally referred. The retention of numerous symplesiomorphies with the Prosauropoda leaves little doubt as to its ancestry. It is considered a primitive sauropod on account of its large size, columnar limbs, pelvic structure, reduced cnemial crest to the tibia, lack of distal tarsals, the length of its forelimbs and its quadrupedal gait. The post-cranial anatomy of Vulcanodon is sufficiently generalized for the Vulcanodontidae to have formed the ancestral stock of both the Camarasauridae and Diplodocidae
