Chlorinated organic contaminants in breast milk of New Zealand women.
Breast milk samples from 38 women in New Zealand were analyzed for organochlorine pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) as part of a World Health Organization collaborative study of breast-milk contaminants. The women were recruited from two urban areas (Auckland and Christchurch) and two rural areas (Northland and North Canterbury) in the North and South Islands of New Zealand. The best predictor of contaminant concentrations in breast milk was found to be the age of the mother. Regional differences were found for hexachlorobenzene, dieldrin, and pp-DDE, reflecting historical use patterns. Urban-rural differences were found for several PCBs, PCDDs, and PCDFs when contaminant concentrations were calculated on a whole-milk basis. However, these differences could be attributed to variation in breast-milk fat concentrations between urban and rural mothers. Urban mothers had about 50% more breast-milk fat than rural mothers. Evidence suggests that breast-milk consumption by babies is regulated by caloric intake. Almost all of the caloric content of milk is in the fat fraction. This suggests that breast-milk contaminant levels calculated on a whole-milk basis do not necessarily reflect the relative levels of exposure of infants to these contaminants. However, the factors that influence breast-milk fat concentration deserve further study
Stable Frank-Kasper phases of self-assembled, soft matter spheres
Single molecular species can self-assemble into Frank Kasper (FK) phases,
finite approximants of dodecagonal quasicrystals, defying intuitive notions
that thermodynamic ground states are maximally symmetric. FK phases are
speculated to emerge as the minimal-distortional packings of space-filling
spherical domains, but a precise quantitation of this distortion and how it
affects assembly thermodynamics remains ambiguous. We use two complementary
approaches to demonstrate that the principles driving FK lattice formation in
diblock copolymers emerge directly from the strong-stretching theory of
spherical domains, in which minimal inter-block area competes with minimal
stretching of space-filling chains. The relative stability of FK lattices is
studied first using a diblock foam model with unconstrained particle volumes
and shapes, which correctly predicts not only the equilibrium {\sigma} lattice,
but also the unequal volumes of the equilibrium domains. We then provide a
molecular interpretation for these results via self-consistent field theory,
illuminating how molecular stiffness regulates the coupling between
intra-domain chain configurations and the asymmetry of local packing. These
findings shed new light on the role of volume exchange on the formation of
distinct FK phases in copolymers, and suggest a paradigm for formation of FK
phases in soft matter systems in which unequal domain volumes are selected by
the thermodynamic competition between distinct measures of shape asymmetry.Comment: 40 pages, 22 figure
Vibronic interactions in the visible and near-infrared spectra of C60− anions
Electron-phonon coupling is an important factor in understanding many properties of the C60 fullerides. However, there has been little success in quantifying the strength of the vibronic coupling in C60 ions, with considerable disagreement between experimental and theoretical results. We will show that neglect of quadratic coupling in previous models for C60- ions results in a significant overestimate of the linear coupling constants. Including quadratic coupling allows a coherent interpretation to be made of earlier experimental and theoretical results which at first sight are incompatible

Biomass Fuel Use and Cardiac Function in Nepali Women.
BackgroundExposure to household air pollution (HAP) from cooking with biomass fuel affects billions of people. We hypothesized that HAP from woodsmoke, compared to other household fuels, was associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes, of which there have been few studies.MethodsA cross-sectional study was completed in 299 females aged 40-70 years in Kaski District, Nepal, during 2017-18. All participants underwent a standard 12-lead ECG, ankle and brachial systolic blood pressure measurement, and 2D color and Doppler echocardiography. Current stove type was confirmed by inspection. Blood pressure, height, and weight were measured using a standardized protocol. Hypertension was defined as ≥140/90 mmHg or prior diagnosis. Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) was obtained, with diabetes mellitus defined as a prior diagnosis or HbA1C ≥ 6.5%. We used adjusted linear and logistic multivariable regressions to examine the relationship of stove type with cardiac structure and function.ResultsThe majority of women primarily used liquified petroleum gas (LPG) stoves (65%), while 12% used biogas, and 23% used wood-burning cook-stoves. Prevalence of major cardiovascular risk factors was 35% with hypertension, 19% with diabetes mellitus, and 15% current smokers. After adjustment, compared to LPG, wood stove use was associated with increased indexed left atrial volume (β = 3.15, 95% CI 1.22 to 5.09) and increased indexed left ventricular end diastolic volume (β = 7.97, 95% CI 3.11 to 12.83). There was no association between stove type and systemic hypertension, left ventricular mass, systolic dysfunction, diastolic dysfunction, pulmonary hypertension, abnormal ankle-brachial index, or clinically significant ECG abnormalities.ConclusionBiomass fuel use was associated with increased indexed left atrial volume and increased indexed left ventricular diastolic volume in Nepali women, suggesting subclinical adverse cardiac remodeling from HAP in this cross-sectional study. We did not find evidence of an association with hypertension or typical cardiac sequelae of hypertension. Future studies to confirm these results are needed

The mechanism for decay is internal conversion, and the decay rate is a strong function of the charge on the ion. Molecular Dynamics Study of the Nematic-Isotropic Interface
We present large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of a nematic-isotropic
interface in a system of repulsive ellipsoidal molecules, focusing in
particular on the capillary wave fluctuations of the interfacial position. The
interface anchors the nematic phase in a planar way, i.e., the director aligns
parallel to the interface. Capillary waves in the direction parallel and
perpendicular to the director are considered separately. We find that the
spectrum is anisotropic, the amplitudes of capillary waves being larger in the
direction perpendicular to the director. In the long wavelength limit, however,
the spectrum becomes isotropic and compares well with the predictions of a
simple capillary wave theory.Comment: to appear in Phys. Rev.
A fast radio burst with a low dispersion measure
Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are millisecond pulses of radio emission of
seemingly extragalactic origin. More than 50 FRBs have now been detected, with
only one seen to repeat. Here we present a new FRB discovery, FRB 110214, which
was detected in the high latitude portion of the High Time Resolution Universe
South survey at the Parkes telescope. FRB 110214 has one of the lowest
dispersion measures of any known FRB (DM = 168.90.5 pc cm), and was
detected in two beams of the Parkes multi-beam receiver. A triangulation of the
burst origin on the sky identified three possible regions in the beam pattern
where it may have originated, all in sidelobes of the primary detection beam.
Depending on the true location of the burst the intrinsic fluence is estimated
to fall in the range of 50 -- 2000 Jy ms, making FRB 110214 one of the
highest-fluence FRBs detected with the Parkes telescope. No repeating pulses
were seen in almost 100 hours of follow-up observations with the Parkes
telescope down to a limiting fluence of 0.3 Jy ms for a 2-ms pulse. Similar
low-DM, ultra-bright FRBs may be detected in telescope sidelobes in the future,
making careful modeling of multi-beam instrument beam patterns of utmost

Directed motion emerging from two coupled random processes: Translocation of a chain through a membrane nanopore driven by binding proteins
We investigate the translocation of a stiff polymer consisting of M monomers
through a nanopore in a membrane, in the presence of binding particles
(chaperones) that bind onto the polymer, and partially prevent backsliding of
the polymer through the pore. The process is characterized by the rates: k for
the polymer to make a diffusive jump through the pore, q for unbinding of a
chaperone, and the rate q kappa for binding (with a binding strength kappa);
except for the case of no binding kappa=0 the presence of the chaperones give
rise to an effective force that drives the translocation process. Based on a
(2+1) variate master equation, we study in detail the coupled dynamics of
diffusive translocation and (partial) rectification by the binding proteins. In
particular, we calculate the mean translocation time as a function of the

A New Species of Boubou (Malaconotidae: Laniarius) from the Albertine Rift
We describe Laniarius willardi, a new species of boubou shrike (Malaconotidae) from the Albertine Rift of Africa. The most conspicuous, distinguishing morphological feature of the species is a gray to blue-gray iris. This and external morphometric data indicate that L. willardi is diagnosable from other black or sooty boubous. Further, L. willardi is genetically diagnosable, and its closest relative is the Mountain Sooty Boubou (L. poensis camerunensis) from Cameroon. The Crimson-breasted Bush-shrike (L. atrococcineus) and the Lowland Sooty Boubou (L. leucorhynchus) are together the sister clade to L. willardi—L.p. camerunensis. Laniarius willardi and the geographically codistributed L. p. holomelas differ by 11.5% in uncorrected sequence divergence, and elevational data taken from museum specimens suggest the possibility of elevational segregation of the species at ∼2,000 m, withL. willardi occurring at lower elevations. Our broad sampling of black and sooty boubou taxa indicate that (1) races of Mountain Sooty Boubou (L. poensis) do not form a monophyletic clade; (2) L. p. camerunensismay represent multiple, nonsister lineages; and (3) at least one race of Fülleborn\u27s Black Boubou (L. fuelleborni usambaricus) is genetically distinct from other races of that species
Identification of Birds through DNA Barcodes
Short DNA sequences from a standardized region of the genome provide a DNA barcode for identifying species. Compiling a public library of DNA barcodes linked to named specimens could provide a new master key for identifying species, one whose power will rise with increased taxon coverage and with faster, cheaper sequencing. Recent work suggests that sequence diversity in a 648-bp region of the mitochondrial gene, cytochrome c oxidase I (COI), might serve as a DNA barcode for the identification of animal species. This study tested the effectiveness of a COI barcode in discriminating bird species, one of the largest and best-studied vertebrate groups. We determined COI barcodes for 260 species of North American birds and found that distinguishing species was generally straightforward. All species had a different COI barcode(s), and the differences between closely related species were, on average, 18 times higher than the differences within species. Our results identified four probable new species of North American birds, suggesting that a global survey will lead to the recognition of many additional bird species. The finding of large COI sequence differences between, as compared to small differences within, species confirms the effectiveness of COI barcodes for the identification of bird species. This result plus those from other groups of animals imply that a standard screening threshold of sequence difference (10× average intraspecific difference) could speed the discovery of new animal species. The growing evidence for the effectiveness of DNA barcodes as a basis for species identification supports an international exercise that has recently begun to assemble a comprehensive library of COI sequences linked to named specimens
