The Clustering Of Galaxies Around Radio-Loud AGNs
We examine the hypothesis that mergers and close encounters between galaxies
can fuel AGNs by increasing the rate at which gas accretes towards the central
black hole. We compare the clustering of galaxies around radio-loud AGNs with
the clustering around a population of radio-quiet galaxies with similar masses,
colors and luminosities. Our catalog contains 2178 elliptical radio galaxies
with flux densities greater than 2.8 mJy at 1.4 GHz from the 6dFGS survey. We
find that radio AGNs with more than 200 times the median radio power have, on
average, more close (r<160 kpc) companions than their radio-quiet counterparts,
suggestive that mergers play a role in forming the most powerful radio
galaxies. For ellipticals of fixed stellar mass, the radio power is not a
function of large-scale environment nor halo mass, consistent with the radio
powers of ellipticals varying by orders of magnitude over billions of years.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure

The general relativistic infinite plane
Uniform fields are one of the simplest and most pedagogically useful examples
in introductory courses on electrostatics or Newtonian gravity. In general
relativity there have been several proposals as to what constitutes a uniform
field. In this article we examine two metrics that can be considered the
general relativistic version of the infinite plane with finite mass per unit
area. The first metric is the 4D version of the 5D "brane" world models which
are the starting point for many current research papers. The second case is the
cosmological domain wall metric. We examine to what extent these different
metrics match or deviate from our Newtonian intuition about the gravitational
field of an infinite plane. These solutions provide the beginning student in
general relativity both computational practice and conceptual insight into
Einstein's field equations. In addition they do this by introducing the student

Live-Fly, Large-Scale Field Experimentation for Large Numbers of Fixed-Wing UAVs
In this paper, we present extensive advances in
live-fly field experimentation capabilities of large numbers
of fixed-wing aerial robots, and highlight both the enabling
technologies as well as the challenges addressed in such large-scale
flight operations. We showcase results from recent field
tests, including the autonomous launch, flight, and landing of 50
UAVs, which illuminate numerous operational lessons learned
and generate rich multi-UAV datasets. We detail the design and
open architecture of the testbed, which intentionally leverages
low-cost and open-source components, aimed at promoting continued
advances and alignment of multi-robot systems research
and practice
