Ranking News-Quality Multimedia
News editors need to find the photos that best illustrate a news piece and
fulfill news-media quality standards, while being pressed to also find the most
recent photos of live events. Recently, it became common to use social-media
content in the context of news media for its unique value in terms of immediacy
and quality. Consequently, the amount of images to be considered and filtered
through is now too much to be handled by a person. To aid the news editor in
this process, we propose a framework designed to deliver high-quality,
news-press type photos to the user. The framework, composed of two parts, is
based on a ranking algorithm tuned to rank professional media highly and a
visual SPAM detection module designed to filter-out low-quality media. The core
ranking algorithm is leveraged by aesthetic, social and deep-learning semantic
features. Evaluation showed that the proposed framework is effective at finding
high-quality photos (true-positive rate) achieving a retrieval MAP of 64.5% and
a classification precision of 70%.Comment: To appear in ICMR'1
Exploring the potential impact of relational coherence on persistent rule-following : the first study
Rule-governed behavior and derived relational responding have both been identified as important variables in human learning. Recent developments in the relational frame theory (RFT) have outlined a number of key variables of potential importance when analyzing the dynamics involved in derived relational responding. Recent research has explored the impact of one of these variables, level of derivation, on persistent rule-following and implicated another, coherence, as possibly important. However, no research to date has examined the impact of coherence on persistent rule-following directly. Across two experiments, coherence was manipulated through the systematic use of performance feedback, and its impact was examined on persistent rule-following. A training procedure based on the implicit relational assessment procedure (IRAP) was used to establish novel combinatorially entailed relations that manipulated the feedback provided on the trained relations (A-B and B-C) in Experiment 1, and on the untrained, derived relations (A-C) in Experiment 2. One of these relations was then inserted into the rule for responding on a subsequent contingency-switching match-to-sample (MTS) task to assess rule persistence. While no significant differences were found in Experiment 1, the provision or non-provision of feedback had a significant differential impact on rule-persistence in Experiment 2. Specifically, participants in the Feedback group resurged back to the original rule for significantly more responses after demonstrating contingency-sensitive responding than did the No-Feedback group, after the contingency reversal. The results highlight the subtle complexities that appear to be involved in persistent rule-following in the face of reversed reinforcement contingencies

Mechanisms of Improved Exercise Performance under Hyperoxia
BACKGROUND The impact of hyperoxia on exercise limitation is still incompletely understood. OBJECTIVES We investigated to which extent breathing hyperoxia enhances the exercise performance of healthy subjects and which physiologic mechanisms are involved. METHODS A total of 32 healthy volunteers (43 ± 15 years, 12 women) performed 4 bicycle exercise tests to exhaustion with ramp and constant-load protocols (at 75% of the maximal workload [Wmax] on FiO2 0.21) on separate occasions while breathing ambient (FiO2 0.21) or oxygen-enriched air (FiO2 0.50) in a random, blinded order. Workload, endurance, gas exchange, pulse oximetry (SpO2), and cerebral (CTO) and quadriceps muscle tissue oxygenation (QMTO) were measured. RESULTS During the final 15 s of ramp exercising with FiO2 0.50, Wmax (mean ± SD 270 ± 80 W), SpO2 (99 ± 1%), and CTO (67 ± 9%) were higher and the Borg CR10 Scale dyspnea score was lower (4.8 ± 2.2) than the corresponding values with FiO2 0.21 (Wmax 257 ± 76 W, SpO2 96 ± 3%, CTO 61 ± 9%, and Borg CR10 Scale dyspnea score 5.7 ± 2.6, p < 0.05, all comparisons). In constant-load exercising with FiO2 0.50, endurance was longer than with FiO2 0.21 (16 min 22 s ± 7 min 39 s vs. 10 min 47 s ± 5 min 58 s). With FiO2 0.50, SpO2 (99 ± 0%) and QMTO (69 ± 8%) were higher than the corresponding isotime values to end-exercise with FiO2 0.21 (SpO2 96 ± 4%, QMTO 66 ± 9%), while minute ventilation was lower in hyperoxia (82 ± 18 vs. 93 ± 23 L/min, p < 0.05, all comparisons). CONCLUSION In healthy subjects, hyperoxia increased maximal power output and endurance. It improved arterial, cerebral, and muscle tissue oxygenation, while minute ventilation and dyspnea perception were reduced. The findings suggest that hyperoxia enhanced cycling performance through a more efficient pulmonary gas exchange and a greater availability of oxygen to muscles and the brain (cerebral motor and sensory neurons)
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT IN CONTEXT: A DESCRIPTIVE MIXED METHOD STUDY OF LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES DURING SIGNIFICANT ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE
This study explores the extent to which organizational culture and operational
environment influence the leadership activities of an organization in the midst of
significant organizational change and whether culture drives leadership development or
vice versa. After exploring several different leadership theories, the study focuses on the
concepts of transformational leadership as the theoretical foundations for the leadership
component of the research. Likewise, the study builds on organizational theory and
sociological foundations to focus on the work of Schein and Hatch for organizational
culture, and Schneider for key concepts used in the development of person-organization
fit.
The research in this study concentrated on the manufacturing organization of a
large, well-known company based in the US. This organization is in the midst of
considerable organizational change in response to upheavals in its markets, its
technology, and its manufacturing strategy. Research was conducted through collection
of data from public sources, review of internal organization documents, a survey of perceptions of the organizational culture held by the staff, and detailed interviews with a
cross section of the professional and managerial staff involved in the leadership
development process.
The results of the research and analysis showed that despite strong efforts by
executive leadership and developing leadership at all levels to create a more
compassionate organizational culture, the crisis facing the organization caused even the
most committed and well-meaning individuals to revert to a cultural norm of a driven,
results-oriented organizational culture. The interviews and survey data led to conclusions
that culture change is a long term effort; that it requires executive leadership
commitment, vision, and constant communication to reinforce the vision; and is best
addressed through leadership development in the younger staff with less personal
investment in the status quo
Metabolism in anoxic permeable sediments is dominated by eukaryotic dark fermentation
Permeable sediments are common across continental shelves and are critical contributors to marine biogeochemical cycling. Organic matter in permeable sediments is dominated by microalgae, which as eukaryotes have different anaerobic metabolic pathways to prokaryotes such as bacteria and archaea. Here we present analyses of flow-through reactor experiments showing that dissolved inorganic carbon is produced predominantly as a result of anaerobic eukaryotic metabolic activity. In our experiments, anaerobic production of dissolved inorganic carbon was consistently accompanied by large dissolved H(2) production rates, suggesting the presence of fermentation. The production of both dissolved inorganic carbon and H(2) persisted following administration of broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotics, but ceased following treatment with metronidazole. Metronidazole inhibits the ferredoxin/hydrogenase pathway of fermentative eukaryotic H(2) production, suggesting that pathway as the source of H(2) and dissolved inorganic carbon production. Metabolomic analysis showed large increases in lipid production at the onset of anoxia, consistent with documented pathways of anoxic dark fermentation in microalgae. Cell counts revealed a predominance of microalgae in the sediments. H(2) production was observed in dark anoxic cultures of diatoms (Fragilariopsis sp.) and a chlorophyte (Pyramimonas) isolated from the study site, substantiating the hypothesis that microalgae undertake fermentation. We conclude that microalgal dark fermentation could be an important energy-conserving pathway in permeable sediments
Sunyaev Zel'dovich Effect Observations of Strong Lensing Galaxy Clusters: Probing the Over-Concentration Problem
We have measured the Sunyaev Zel'dovich (SZ) effect for a sample of ten
strong lensing selected galaxy clusters using the Sunyaev Zel'dovich Array
(SZA). The SZA is sensitive to structures on spatial scales of a few
arcminutes, while the strong lensing mass modeling constrains the mass at small
scales (typically < 30"). Combining the two provides information about the
projected concentrations of the strong lensing clusters. The Einstein radii we
measure are twice as large as expected given the masses inferred from SZ
scaling relations. A Monte Carlo simulation indicates that a sample randomly
drawn from the expected distribution would have a larger median Einstein radius
than the observed clusters about 3% of the time. The implied overconcentration
has been noted in previous studies with smaller samples of lensing clusters. It
persists for this sample, with the caveat that this could result from a
systematic effect such as if the gas fractions of the strong lensing clusters
are substantially below what is expected.Comment: submitte
