Application of data envelopment analysis to measure technical efficiency on a sample of Irish dairy farms
peer-reviewedThe aim of this study was to determine the levels of technical efficiency on a sample of
Irish dairy farms utilizing Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and to identify key management
and production factors that differ between producers indentified as efficient
and inefficient. DEA was used in this study to generate technical efficiency scores under
assumptions of both constant returns to scale (CRS) and variable returns to scale (VRS). The average technical efficiency score was 0.785 under CRS and 0.833 under VRS. Key production characteristics of efficient and inefficient producers were compared using an analysis of variance. More technically efficient producers used less input per unit of output, had higher production per cow and per hectare and had a longer grazing season, a higher milk quality standard, were more likely to have participated in milk recording and had greater land quality compared to the inefficient producers
A Study of Degenerate Four-quark states in SU(2) Lattice Monte Carlo
The energies of four-quark states are calculated for geometries in which the
quarks are situated on the corners of a series of tetrahedra and also for
geometries that correspond to gradually distorting these tetrahedra into a
plane. The interest in tetrahedra arises because they are composed of {\bf
three } degenerate partitions of the four quarks into two two-quark colour
singlets. This is an extension of earlier work showing that geometries with
{\bf two} degenerate partitions (e.g.\ squares) experience a large binding
energy. It is now found that even larger binding energies do not result, but
that for the tetrahedra the ground and first excited states become degenerate
in energy. The calculation is carried out using SU(2) for static quarks in the
quenched approximation with on a lattice. The
results are analysed using the correlation matrix between different euclidean
times and the implications of these results are discussed for a model based on

Dietary vitamin D2 - a potentially underestimated contributor to vitamin D nutritional status of adults?
It has been suggested that vitamin D2 is not very prevalent in the human food chain. However, data from a number of recent intervention studies suggest that the majority of subjects had measurable serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D2 (25(OH)D2) concentrations. Serum 25(OH)D2, unlike 25(OH)D3, is not directly influenced by exposure of skin to sun and thus has dietary origins; however, quantifying dietary vitamin D2 is difficult due to the limitations of food composition data. Therefore, the present study aimed to characterise serum 25(OH)D2 concentrations in the participants of the National Adult Nutrition Survey (NANS) in Ireland, and to use these serum concentrations to estimate the intake of vitamin D2 using a mathematical modelling approach. Serum 25(OH)D2 concentration was measured by a liquid chromatography–tandem MS method, and information on diet as well as subject characteristics was obtained from the NANS. Of these participants, 78·7 % (n 884) had serum 25(OH)D2 concentrations above the limit of quantification, and the mean, maximum, 10th, 50th (median) and 90th percentile values of serum 25(OH)D2 concentrations were 3·69, 27·6, 1·71, 2·96 and 6·36 nmol/l, respectively. To approximate the intake of vitamin D2 from these serum 25(OH)D2 concentrations, we used recently published data on the relationship between vitamin D intake and the responses of serum 25(OH)D concentrations. The projected 5th to 95th percentile intakes of vitamin D2 for adults were in the range of 0·9–1·2 and 5–6 μg/d, respectively, and the median intake ranged from 1·7 to 2·3 μg/d. In conclusion, the present data demonstrate that 25(OH)D2 concentrations are present in the sera of adults from this nationally representative sample. Vitamin D2 may have an impact on nutritional adequacy at a population level and thus warrants further investigation

The EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) (2000/60/EC) was transposed into Irish law in 2003 as the European Communities (Water Policy) The level of priority substances present in water bodies is most commonly judged against set environmental quality standards (EQSs) . These standards dictate the maximum allowable concentrations (MAC EQS) or range of concentrations (Annual Average or AA EQS) of specific pollutants allowed to ensure compliance with the EC guidelines. The EU WFD was transposed into Irish Law in 2003 and as such these EQS values now form the basis of priority substance water monitoring in Ireland
Comparison of foam swabs and toothbrushes as oral hygiene interventions in mechanically ventilated patients: a randomised split mouth study
Abstract
Introduction During critical illness, dental plaque may serve as a reservoir of respiratory pathogens. This study compared the effectiveness of toothbrushing with a small-headed toothbrush or a foam-headed swab in mechanically ventilated patients.
Methods This was a randomised, assessor-blinded, split-mouth trial, performed at a single critical care unit. Adult, orally intubated patients with >20 teeth, where >24 hours of mechanical ventilation was expected were included. Teeth were cleaned 12-hourly using a foam swab or toothbrush (each randomly assigned to one side of the mouth). Cleaning efficacy was based on plaque scores, gingival index and microbial plaque counts.
Results High initial plaque (mean=2.1 (SD 0.45)) and gingival (mean=2.0 (SD 0.54)) scores were recorded for 21 patients. A significant reduction compared with initial plaque index occurred using both toothbrushes (mean change=−1.26, 95% CI −1.57 to −0.95; p<0.001) and foam swabs (mean change=−1.28, 95% CI −1.54 to −1.01; p<0.001). There was significant reduction in gingival index over time using toothbrushes (mean change=−0.92; 95% CI −1.19 to −0.64; p<0.001) and foam swabs (mean change=−0.85; 95% CI −1.10 to −0.61; p<0.001). Differences between cleaning methods were not statistically significant (p=0.12 for change in gingival index; p=0.24 for change in plaque index). There was no significant change in bacterial dental plaque counts between toothbrushing (mean change 3.7×104 colony-forming units (CFUs); minimum to maximum (−2.5×1010 CFUs, 8.7×107 CFUs)) and foam swabs (mean change 9×104 CFUs; minimum to maximum (−3.1×1010 CFUs, 3.0×107 CFUs)).
Conclusions Patients admitted to adult intensive care had poor oral health, which improved after brushing with a toothbrush or foam swab. Both interventions were equally effective at removing plaque and reducing gingival inflammation.

Secondary Students, Laptops and Game Design: Examining the Potential of Homemade PowerPoint Games in a Blended Learning Environment
The integration of technology into K-12 classrooms has long been hampered by the problem of scalability. Familiar software programs, such as MS PowerPoint, can be used as a tool for students to create educational games to deepen their understanding of content. In this article, the authors examine students in two secondary social studies classes that created homemade PowerPoint games as a way to review for their mid-term and final examinations. The authors compared student performance on these exams based upon the topics covered by their game design. While no significant differences in student outcomes were found, qualitative analyses indicate that students and the teacher reported that the activity enjoyable and wished to continue this project. The authors speculate the lack of statistical differences was due to the small sample size and plan to use the lessons from the first year as this research continues
