CO2 Sink Effect Of Concrete Carbonation Spain
Although carbonation of cement phases is well known, the amount of carbon dioxide combined during the process has been much less investigated. Related to the greenhouse effect much more attention is being paid to the sinks for C 0 2 in order to correctly compute the gases emission during production of materials. In the case of cement a strict calculation should discount the C 0 2 emitted from that fixed by the concrete. This is the aim of present work which is a study of the cement based materials ability to combine C 02. Using Thermogravimetry and Differential Thermal Analysis as well as phenolphthalein indicator, quantities of C 0 2 combined and carbonation depth in several cement pastes and concretes exposed to different environments have been measured. A calculation to estimate the contribution of cement based materials carbonation to the partial re-absorption of the C 02 emitted in cement production is proposed
Synthesis and evaluation of biphenyl derivatives as potential downregulators of VEGF protein secretion and telomerase-related gene expressions
A group of 47 biphenyl functionalized compounds, prepared by means of Suzuki couplings, has been
investigated for their cytotoxicity on two tumoral cell lines (HT-29 and MCF-7) and one non tumoral cell
line (HEK-293). 29 selected compounds have been investigated for their ability to inhibit the production
of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Subsequently, the capacity of the compounds to downregulate
the expression of the VEGF, h-TERT and c-Myc genes, the two latter involved in the control of the
activation of telomerase, has also been determined.Financial support has been granted to M.C. by the Ministerio

Understanding Le Châtelier's principle fundamentals: five key questions
[EN] The well-known Le Châtelier's principle is almost always mentioned when dealing with chemical equilibrium. Nevertheless, although a must in most general chemistry courses starting from the secondary level, when students face questions about it, some major misconceptions are often highlighted; to avoid this, a somewhat challenging problem is now presented. It can be deemed a very useful tool for a full understanding of this principle and chemical equilibrium as a whole. A generic chemical reaction at equilibrium is subject to different types of perturbation, and the student is required ¿ in each case ¿ to identify the new position of equilibrium among a number of proposals. The correct answers are finally provided along with the corresponding explanations.Peris Tortajada, M. (2021). Understanding Le Châtelier's principle fundamentals: five key questions.
[EN] In this project it is going to explain the most common membrane technologies such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis. Synthesis and biological evaluation of truncated α-tubulin-binding pironetin analogues lacking alkyl pendants in the side chain or the dihydropyrone ring
The preparation of several new truncated analogues of the natural dihydropyrone pironetin is described. They differ from the natural product mainly in the suppression of some of the alkyl pendants in either the side chain or the dihydropyrone ring. Their cytotoxic activity and their interactions with tubulin have been investigated. It has been found that all analogues are cytotoxic towards two either sensitive or resistant tumoral cell lines with similar IC50 values in each case, thus strongly suggesting that, like natural pironetin, they also display a covalent mechanism of action. Their cytotoxicity is, however, lower than that of the parent compound. This indicates that all alkyl pendants are necessary for the full biological activity, with the ethyl group at C-4 seemingly being particularly relevant. Most likely, the alkyl groups cause a restriction in the conformational mobility of the molecule and reduce the number of available conformations. This makes it more probable that the molecule preferentially adopts a shape which fits better into the binding point in α-tubulin
The Spanish society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (SENPE) and its relation with healthcare authorities
sanitarios, instituciones, colegios profesionales, asociaciones
control de las acciones desarrolladasIt has been well documented in medical literature that
hyponutrition is a common issue at all healthcare levels,
from primary to specialized health care, as well as geria -
tric healthcare facilities. This problem is not limited to
countries with scarce economic resources or limited social
development; it is also a universal issue in Europe.
Hyponutrition increases the rates of morbidity, mortality,
hospital admissions, and hospital stay. These higher
figures also represent a higher use of healthcare
resources. In spite of this, hyponutrition may often go
undetected and the patient may not receive the necessary
treatment. This problem requires the cooperation of multiple
agents such as the Governments, the healthcare professionals,
and the citizens themselves. The VIII Discussion
Forum concludes on the need to establish a clear-cut
plant for action (similar to the European Alliance for
Health Nutrition) and the creation of a platform (coalition)
encompassing the voices of healthcare professionals
associations, institutions, professional colleges, patients
associations, the pharmaceutical companies, and insurance
companies. The goals of this platform will be to
inform about the extent of this issue, to identity and promote
leaders that will convey the aims of this initiative to
regional and national healthcare authorities, to present
solutions and to collaborate in their implementation, and
finally to assess/control the actions take
Electronic noses and tongues to assess food authenticity and adulteration
[EN] Background: There is a growing concern for the problem of food authenticity assessment (and hence the detection of food adulteration), since it cheats the consumer and can pose serious risk to health in some instances. Unfortunately, food safety/integrity incidents occur with worrying regularity, and therefore there is clearly a need for the development of new analytical techniques.
Scope and approach: In this review, after briefly commenting the principles behind the design of electronic noses and electronic tongues, the most relevant contributions of these sensor systems in food adulteration control and authenticity assessment over the past ten years are discussed. It is also remarked that future developments in the utilization of advanced sensors arrays will lead to superior electronic senses with more capabilities, thus making the authenticity and falsification assessment of food products a faster and more reliable process.
Key findings and conclusions: The use of both types of e-devices in this field has been steadily increasing along the present century, mainly due to the fact that their efficiency has been significantly improved as important developments are taking place in the area of data handling and multivariate data analysis methods.
