Charge Symmetry Violation in as a Test of Chiral Effective Field Theory
Chiral effective field theory predicts a specific charge symmetry violating
amplitude for pion production. This term is shown to provide the dominant
contribution to the forward-backward asymmetry in the angular distribution for
the reaction , for reasonable values of the mass difference
between down and up quarks, . Using a value 3
MeV leads to a prediction of a 10 standard deviation effect for a TRIUMF
experiment.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure, to be submitted to Phys.Lett.
The N N -> NN pi+ Reaction near Threshold in a Chiral Power Counting Approach
Power-counting arguments are used to organize the interactions contributing
to the N N -> d pi, p n pi reactions near threshold. We estimate the
contributions from the three formally leading mechanisms: the Weinberg-Tomozawa
(WT) term, the impulse term, and the -excitation mechanism. Sub-leading
but potentially large mechanisms, including -wave pion-rescattering, the
Galilean correction to the WT term, and short-ranged contributions are also
examined. The WT term is shown to be numerically the largest, and the other
contributions are found to approximately cancel. Similarly to the reaction p p
-> p p pi0, the computed cross sections are considerably smaller than the data.
We discuss possible origins of this discrepancy.Comment: 31 pages, 17 figure
Tadpole Method and Supersymmetric O(N) Sigma Model
We examine the phase structures of the supersymmetric O(N) sigma model in two
and three dimensions by using the tadpole method. Using this simple method, the
calculation is largely simplified and the characteristics of this theory become
clear. We also examine the problem of the fictitious negative energy state.Comment: Plain Latex(12pages), No figur
Meson Exchange and Pion Rescattering Contributions to the Cross Section for
Short range meson-exchange mechanisms such as contribute
significantly to the amplitude for near threshold in
addition to pion rescattering. The uncertainty of the latter contribution,
which depends on poorly determined parameters, is estimated. Allowing for this
uncertainty and taking the short range meson-exchange contributions into
account makes it possible to reproduce the measured cross section.Comment: 18 pages, latex, 3 ps figure
Charge-Symmetry-Breaking Three-Nucleon Forces
Leading-order three-nucleon forces that violate isospin symmetry are
calculated in Chiral Perturbation Theory. The effect of the
charge-symmetry-breaking three-nucleon force is investigated in the trinucleon
systems using Faddeev calculations. We find that the contribution of this force
to the 3He - 3H binding-energy difference is approximately 5 keV.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure
Nucleon-nucleon charge symmetry breaking and the dd -> alpha pi0 reaction
We show that using parameters consistent with the charge symmetry violating
difference between the strong nn and pp scattering lengths provides significant
constraints on the amplitude for the dd -> alpha pi0 reaction.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
