Balancing multiple roles through consensus: Making revisions in haircutting sessions
This study demonstrates how participants in haircutting sessions merge different roles during one of the most sensitive moments of an encounter: requesting and/or making revisions to a new cut. During the process of arriving at a consensus of whether or not changes need to be made to the new cut, the stylist and the client negotiate not only the quality of the cut, but also their expected roles. Caring about both the bodies and the minds of customers is an important element in measuring the quality of cosmetological services, a consideration which may oblige stylists to immediately agree with and act upon every client request or concern. However, simply yielding to the customer’s opinions can threaten the stylist’s role as a beauty expert, one who possesses their own professional standards. The analysis reveals that the participants frequently transform revision requests/offers into mutual decisions through a combination of verbal and bodily actions. In doing so, they harmonize the sometimes conflicting responsibilities of “service provider/patron” and “expert/novice.
Development of analytical methods for organic compound determination in fine particles and ageing study under controlled conditions
This thesis – dealing with the chemical characterization of organic matter in fine atmospheric particles – consisted of the two following objectives: (i) the development of analytical methods to identify and quantify some organic compounds: long-chain mono- and dialkanoic acids, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their nitrated and oxygenated derivatives;(ii) the study of possible sampling artefacts while collecting particulate PAHs on filters under controlled conditions. The analyses were carried out by liquid chromatography coupled to a UV detector and a fluorimeter for PAHs, and a time-of-flight mass spectrometer for the other species. Pressurized liquid extraction methods were optimized using experimental design. The proposed methods were validated on complex matrices (standard reference materials and/or real samples). Concentration levels could be monitored for particles collected in an urban background site in Douai and seasonal trends consistent with literature data have been observed.Sampling artefacts linked to desorption and reactivity towards atmospheric pollutants (O3, NO2) for particulate PAHs present in real samples have been investigated using an experimental device to simulate filter sampling. The magnitude and the variability of these artefacts have been measured as a function of environmental conditions (temperature, relative humidity) and pollutant concentrations
Communicative Conduct in Commercial Medicine: Initial Consultations Between Plastic Surgeons and Prospective Clients
In this study, I investigated naturally occurring medical interaction in commercial medicine. Drawing on 30+ hours of videotaped data and 9 months of fieldwork in a cosmetic surgery clinic, this analysis focuses on how plastic surgeons interact with patients who seek to alter their bodily appearance. The ethnographically informed discourse analysis reveals how plastic surgeons manage multiple and competing interactive demands. Specifically, I describe plastic surgeons’ key strategies for meeting both health-related and institutional goals. In the conclusion, I reflect on the communication challenges that medical professionals and patients face when consumerism and medicine meet. </jats:p
