    Self-sensing cellulose structures with design-controlled stiffness

    Robots are often used for sensing and sampling in natural environments. Within this area, soft robots have become increasingly popular for these tasks because their mechanical compliance makes them safer to interact with. Unfortunately, if these robots break while working in vulnerable environments, they create potentially hazardous waste. Consequently, the development of compliant, biodegradable structures for soft, eco-robots is a relevant research area that we explore here. Cellulose is one of the most abundant biodegradable materials on earth, but it is naturally very stiff, which makes it difficult to use in soft robots. Here, we look at both biologically and kirigami inspired structures that can be used to reduce the stiffness of cellulose based parts for soft robots up to a factor of 19 000. To demonstrate this, we build a compliant force and displacement sensing structure from microfibrillated cellulose. We also describe a novel manufacturing technique for these structures, provide mechanical models that allow designers to specify their stiffness, and conclude with a description of our structure's performance

    Preoperative Systemic Inflammatory Indices as Predictors of Malignant Pathology in Repeat Transurethral Resection for High-risk Non-muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer: Insights from a Cross-Sectional Study

    Objective: This study investigates the predictive value of systemic inflammatory indices for repeat transuretral resection of bladder tumour (Re-TUR-BT) pathology in patients with high-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 83 patients diagnosed with primary bladder tumors who underwent Re-TUR-BT based on initial pathology results from January 2014 to December 2023. Patients were categorized into two groups based on Re-TUR-BT pathology: Group 1 (non-malignant at Re-TUR-BT) and group 2 (malignant at Re-TUR-BT). We compared systemic inflammatory markers between these groups. Results: Of the 83 patients, 55 (82.5%) were in group 1 and 28 (17.5%) in group 2. Demographic characteristics showed no significant differences between the groups. However, upon comparison of operative and histopathological features, the incidence of T1 classification in first TUR-BT pathology, was significantly higher in group 2. Additionally, group 1 had a higher proportion of single tumors, whereas group 2 exhibited a greater incidence of two or more tumors, a difference that was statistically significant. Analysis of systemic inflammatory indices revealed no significant differences in the complete blood count results before the initial TUR-BT. However, both the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) showed significant differences before Re-TUR-BT. Conclusion: Our study indicates that SII and NLR calculated prior to Re-TUR-BT can predict malignant pathology persistence in high-risk NMIBC patients. These findings underscore the potential of systemic inflammatory indices as valuable biomarkers in clinical practice

    Electroactive poly(vinylidene fluoride) based materials: recent progress, challenges and opportunities

    A poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and its copolymers are polymers that, in specific crystalline phases, show high dielectric and piezoelectric values, excellent mechanical behavior and good thermal and chemical stability, suitable for many applications from the biomedical area to energy devices. This chapter introduces the main properties, processability and polymorphism of PVDF. Further, the recent advances in the applications based on those materials are presented and discussed. Robotic and autonomous systems (RAS) offer technological solutions that may substantially advance terrestrial biodiversity monitoring, but this potential is yet to be considered systematically. We used a modified Delphi technique to synthesize knowledge from 98 biodiversity experts and 31 RAS experts, who identified the major methodological barriers that currently hinder monitoring, and explored the opportunities and challenges that RAS offer in overcoming these barriers. Biodiversity experts identified four barrier categories: site access, species and individual identification, data handling and storage, and power and network availability. Robotics experts highlighted technologies that could overcome these barriers and identified the developments needed to facilitate RAS-based autonomous biodiversity monitoring. Some existing RAS could be optimized relatively easily to survey species but would require development to be suitable for monitoring of more ‘difficult’ taxa and robust enough to work under uncontrolled conditions within ecosystems. Other nascent technologies (for instance, new sensors and biodegradable robots) need accelerated research. Overall, it was felt that RAS could lead to major progress in monitoring of terrestrial biodiversity by supplementing rather than supplanting existing methods. Transdisciplinarity needs to be fostered between biodiversity and RAS experts so that future ideas and technologies can be codeveloped effectively

    A Focus on Soft Actuation

    The present editorial paper analyzes the hundred recent research works on soft actuation to understand the current main research focus in the light of the grand challenges in the field. Two characteristic paper types were obtained: one focuses on soft actuator design, manufacturing and demonstration, while another includes in addition the development of functional materials. Although vast majority of the works showcased soft actuation, evaluation of its robustness by multi-cyclic actuation was reported in less than 50% of the works, while only 10% described successful actuation for more than 1000 cycles. It is suggested that broadening the research focus to include investigation of mechanisms underlying the degradation of soft functional material performance in real cyclic actuation conditions, along with application of artificial intelligence methods for prediction of muscle behavior, may allow overcoming the reliability issues and developing robust soft-material actuators. The outcomes of the present work might be applicable to the entire soft robotics domain.</jats:p
