Is the use of deep learning an appropriate means to locate debris in the ocean without harming aquatic wildlife?
With the global issue of marine debris ever expanding, it is imperative that the technology industry steps in. The aim is to find if deep learning can successfully distinguish between marine life and synthetic debris underwater. This study assesses whether we could safely clean up our oceans with Artificial Intelligence without disrupting the delicate balance of aquatic ecosystems. Our research compares a simple convolutional neural network with a VGG-16 model using an original database of 1,644 underwater images and a binary classification to sort synthetic material from aquatic life. Our results show first insights to safely distinguishing between debris and life

Aristophanes and De Ste. Croix: The value of old comedy as evidence for Athenian popular culture
De Ste. Croix famously argued that Aristophanes had a conservative political outlook and attempted to use his comedies to win over lower-class audiences to this minority point of view. The ongoing influence of his interpretation has meant that old comedy has been largely ignored in the historiography of Athenian popular culture. This article extends earlier critiques of de Ste. Croix by systematically comparing how Aristophanes and the indisputably popular genre of fourth-century oratory represented the social classes of the Athenians and political leaders. The striking parallels between the two suggest that Aristophanes, far from advocating a minority position, exploited the rich and, at times, contradictory views of lower-class citizens for comic and ultimately competitive ends. As a consequence his plays are valuable evidence for Athenian popular culture and help to correct the markedly fourth-century bias in the writing of Athenian cultural history
'Is the use of deep learning an appropriate means to locate debris in the ocean without harming aquatic wildlife?' Source Code
These are the source code files for a simple convolutional neural network compared with the VGG-16 transfer learning model that we trained and tested for our paper: 'Is the use of deep learning an appropriate means to locate debris in the ocean without harming aquatic wildlife?'. Within our research we compared the following two CNN's by training them on our dataset of 1,644 images and testing on 100 images. As our database of imagery is small, we were only able to produce a 'prototype' on what this research could lead to. Our aim was to see if a CNN could safely distinguish between marine life and synthetic debris in a binary classification and we achieved promising results with an accuracy of 89% (custom CNN) and 95% (VGG-16). The full paper explains how with further development this project could be applied to automation and be a part of the process of cleaning up earth's oceans and waterways; the paper also outlines the importance of reducing marine litter on animal life, the environment and human health.THIS DATASET IS ARCHIVED AT DANS/EASY, BUT NOT ACCESSIBLE HERE. Buyer attitudes concerning housing: the tract home versus the condominium.
The purpose of this study has been to investigate the attitudes and opinions of a representative sample of the local home-buying public in terms of housing preferences and to compare a tract home with its condominium counterpart. On the basis of consumer responses, a profile was developed to indicate the kind of people who buy condominiums and those who buy tract homes, the features found desirable and undesirable, and the overall ratings of the homes under investigation. Information concerning consumer criticism of both types of housing was intended to be utilized as a meaningful tool for community planners and developers in designing future plans according to the actual needs and desires of local home buyers
The eye expanded: life and the arts in Greco-Roman antiquity
Plato and Aristotle both believed that the arts were mimetic creations of the human mind that had the power to influence society. In this they were representative of a widespread consensus in ancient culture. Cultural and political impulses informed the fine arts, and these in turn shaped - and were often intended to shape - the living world. The contributors to this volume, all of whom have been encouraged and inspired by the work of Peter Green, document the interaction between life and the arts that has made art more lively and life more artful in sixteen essays with subjects ranging from antiquity to modern times. With topics ranging from Antigone to D. H. Lawrence and Norman Douglas, and from Bactrian coins to Livy's characterization of women, the scope, the zest, and the scholarship of these essays will illuminate new avenues in our understanding of the relationship between classics and culture, and in our appreciation of both the artistic products that have come down to us and the varieties of life from which they spring
