Low Cost Silicon Solar Array Project. Feasibility of Low-cost, High-volume Production of Silane and Pyrolysis of Silane to Semiconductor-grade Silicon
The presence of copper promotes a more rapid approach to the steady stete operating condition and results in a more consistent reactor effluent composition. The average kinetic and equilibrium yield are unchanged. Incoloy has been identified as the preferred choice of material of construction for the hydrogenation reactor although certain metallurgical changes were noted in samples exposed to the H2/HCl atmosphere at 500 C which indicate the need for more testing
Identifying Subclasses of Long Gamma-Ray Bursts with Cumulative Light Curve Morphology of Prompt Emissions
We argue a new classification scheme of long gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) using
the morphology of the cumulative light curve of the prompt emission. We
parametrize the morphology by the absolute deviation from their constant
luminosity () and derive the value for 36 LGRBs which have spectropic
redshifts, spectral parameters determined by the Band model, 1-second peak
fluxes, fluences, and 64-msec resolution light curves whose peak counts are 10
times larger than background fluctuations. Then we devide the sample according
to the value of ADCL into two groups () and, for
each group, derive the spectral peak energy - peak luminosity
correlation and the Fundamental Plane of LGRBs, which is a
correlation between the spectral peak energy , the luminosity time
( where is isotropic
energy) and the peak luminosity . We find that both of the
correlations for both groups are statistically more significant compared with
ones derived from all samples. The Fundamental Planes with small and large ADCL
are given by with
and with , respectively. This fact implies the
existence of subclasses of LGRBs characterized by the value of . Also
there is a hint for the existence of the intermediate- class which
deviates from both fundamental planes. Both relations are so tight that our
result provides a new accurate distance measurement scheme up to the high
redshift universe.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables. Submitted to PAS
Low cost silicon solar array project silicon materials task: Establishment of the feasibility of a process capable of low-cost, high volume production of silane (step 1) and the pyrolysis of silane to semiconductor-grade silicon (step 2)
A quartz fluid bed reactor capable of operating at temperatures of up to 1000 C was designed, constructed, and successfully operated. During a 30 minute experiment, silane was decomposed within the reactor with no pyrolysis occurring on the reactor wall or on the gas injection system. A hammer mill/roller-crusher system appeared to be the most practical method for producing seed material from bulk silicon. No measurable impurities were detected in the silicon powder produced by the free space reactor, using the cathode layer emission spectroscopic technique. Impurity concentration followed by emission spectroscopic examination of the residue indicated a total impurity level of 2 micrograms/gram. A pellet cast from this powder had an electrical resistivity of 35 to 45 ohm-cm and P-type conductivity

Gamma-Ray Burst Polarimeter - GAP - aboard the Small Solar Power Sail Demonstrator IKAROS
The small solar power sail demonstrator "IKAROS" is a Japanese engineering
verification spacecraft launched by H-IIA rocket on May 21, 2010 at JAXA
Tanegashima Space Center. IKAROS has a huge sail with 20 m in diameter which is
made of thin polyimide membrane. This sail converts the solar
radiation-pressure into the propulsion force of IKAROS and accelerates the
spacecraft. The Gamma-Ray Burst Polarimeter (GAP) aboard IKAROS is the first
polarimeter to observe the gamma-ray polarization of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs)
during the IKAROS cruising phase. GAP is a tinny detector of 3.8 kg in weight
and 17 cm in size with an energy range between 50-300 keV. The GAP detector
also plays a role of the interplanetary network (IPN) to determine the GRB
direction. The detection principle of gamma-ray polarization is the anisotropy
of the Compton scattering. GAP works as the GRB polarimeter with the full
coincidence mode between the central plastic and the surrounding CsI detectors.
GAP is the first instrument, devoted for the observation of gamma-ray
polarization in the astronomical history. In this paper, we present the GAP
detector and its ground and onboard calibrations.Comment: Submitted to Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan

Strict Limit on CPT Violation from Polarization of Gamma-Ray Bursts
We report the strictest observational verification of CPT invariance in the
photon sector, as a result of gamma-ray polarization measurement of distant
gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), which are brightest stellar-size explosions in the
universe. We detected the gamma-ray polarization of three GRBs with high
significance, and the source distances may be constrained by a well-known
luminosity indicator for GRBs. For the Lorentz- and CPT-violating dispersion
relation E_{\pm}^2=p^2 \pm 2\xi p^3/M_{Pl}, where \pm denotes different
circular polarization states of the photon, the parameter \xi is constrained as
|\xi|<O(10^{-15}). Barring precise cancellation between quantum gravity effects
and dark energy effects, the stringent limit on the CPT-violating effect leads
to the expectation that quantum gravity presumably respects the CPT invariance.Comment: 4 pages; accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters;
redshift estimates of GRBs changed (i.e z=0.382 was wrong for GRB 110721A)
and calculations of \xi limit improved from the previous versio
Destruxin E Decreases Beta-Amyloid Generation by Reducing Colocalization of Beta-Amyloid-Cleaving Enzyme 1 and Beta-Amyloid Protein Precursor
Alzheimer-disease-associated beta-amyloid (A beta) is produced by sequential endoproteolysis of beta-amyloid protein precursor (beta APP): the extracellular portion is shed by cleavage in the juxtamembrane region by beta-amyloid-cleaving enzyme (BACE)/beta-secretase, after which it is cleaved by presenilin (PS)/gamma-secretase near the middle of the transmembrane domain. Thus, inhibition of either of the secretases reduces A beta generation and is a fundamental strategy for the development of drugs to prevent Alzheimer disease. However, it is not clear how small compounds reduce A beta production without inhibition of the secretases. Such compounds are expected to avoid some of the side effects of secretase inhibitors. Here, we report that destruxin E (Dx-E), a natural cyclic hexadepsipeptide, reduces A beta generation without affecting BACE or PS/gamma-secretase activity. In agreement with this, Dx-E did not inhibit Notch signaling. We found that Dx-E decreases colocalization of BACE1 and beta APP, which reduces beta-cleavage of beta APP. Therefore, the data demonstrate that Dx-E represents a novel A beta-reducing process which could have fewer side effects than secretase inhibitors. Copyright (C) 2009 S. Karger AG, Base
Biological Control of Musk Thistle, Carduus Nutans, in South Dakota
Two sites in southeastern South Dakota were used in this study. Both sites supported unusually dense infestations of C. nutans and were chosen on that basis. Site A was located at an unoccupied farmstead in Minnehaha County, 2 miles S.W. of Crooks. This site was composed of 3 distinct infestations of musk thistle: (1) the first stand of thistles was approximately 2 x 9 m surrounded by Siberian elm, Ulmus pumila L., Conyza canadensis (L.) Cronquist (mare\u27s tail) and a Bromus sp., probably B. inermis Leysser. The thistles in this area stood 2+ m tall at maturity. (2) The second area, 3 x 3 m, was composed of musk thistles shaded throughout the day by Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marshall and Acer negundo L. The thistles in this area had been knocked down at an undetermined date early in the first summer of the study. In the second summer, only few thistles were found in this area being replaced largely by catnip, Neoeta catapia L. (3) The third area at Site A was a narrow band of musk thistle approximately 2 x 20 m, growing along a cornfield adjacent to the unoccupied farmstead. These thistles were 1 m tall at maturity and were subjected once, in the early summer of 1973 to pesticide wind drift from the contiguous cornfield, which resulted in permanent twisting of the stems, although the drift was not strong enough to initiate any kind of kill. Site B was a 30-acre pasture, 10 miles west of Yankton and 1 mile north of the Missouri River. The thistle density of this pasture was not as high as the densities of the stands of Site A, but the infested area was much more extensive, covering about 50%, of the field. The principal grasses of this pasture were: Sporobolus cryptandrus (Torrey) Grey, B. inermis, B. japonicus Thunberg, Poa pratensis L., and Panicum wilcoxianum Vasey. The field was sprayed with herbicides twice in 1974. The first application, with 2,4-D, occurred on 14 June. About 20 of the musk thistles remained alive. The second application occurred between 24 July and 7 August. Virtually 100% of the musk thistle were killed. The sampling techniques of ecological studies dictate the nature and accuracy of the entire study. In my work, the wide variation in habitats of musk thistle, the absence of faunistic records of C. nutans in South Dakota, and the limited duration of this study, called for a broad, flexible procedure that would produce qualitative results on which to base more specific studies if necessary. Results from my survey should reveal the success or failure of this initial introduction of R. conicus and at the same time divulge some of the insect fauna of musk thistle in South Dakota
Generation of active fragments from human zymogens in the bradykinin-generating cascade by extracellular proteases from Vibrio vulnificus and V. parahaemolyticus
Vibrio vulnificus is an opportunistic human pathogen causing septicemia, and the infection is
characterized by formation of the edematous skin lesions on limbs. This pathogenic species
secretes a thermolysin-like metalloprotease as a virulence determinant. The metalloprotease
was confirmed to activate human factor XII-plasma kallikrein-kinin cascade that results in
liberation of bradykinin, a chemical mediator enhancing the vascular permeability, from
high-molecular weight kininogen. Namely, the metalloprotease showed to generate active
fragments by cleavage of Arg-Ile, Arg-Val or Gly-Leu peptide bond in human zymogens
(plasma prekallikrein and factor XII). In spite of induction of the sufficient vascular
permeability-enhancing and edema-forming reaction in the guinea pig model, a serine
protease from V. parahaemolyticus, a human pathogen causing primarily watery diarrhea,
showed far less ability to activate and to cleave the human zymogens. These results in part
may explain why only V. vulnificus often causes serious edematous skin damages in humans.</p
Highly efficient synthesis of the tricyclic core of Taxol by cascade metathesis
An efficient enantioselective synthesis of the ABC tricyclic core of the anticancer drug Taxol is reported. The key step of this synthesis is a cascade metathesis reaction, which leads in one operation to the required tricycle if appropriate fine-tuning of the dienyne precursor is performed
