The Inscription between text and object: The deconstruction of a multifaceted notion with aview of a flexible digital representation

    Get PDF
International audienceIn scholarly use, the term 'inscription' is not always unambiguous. The same concept can designate either the signifiers on a support, regardless of their meaning and textual function, or can be used to distinguish different texts. In a digital representation, a distinct markup is utilised to encode the material and textual dimensions. In order to combine them in an adequate representation, we submit a definition of some epigraphic notions which supports the theoretical model of an encoding schema compliant with the EpiDoc guidelines, designed as a part of the IGLouvre project

Background Fungi of the phylum Basidiomycota are well-known to form a broad spectrum of biologically active secondary metabolites, especially low molecular weight compounds such as terpenoids. Hericium erinaceus produces various cyathane type diterpenoids including erinacines. However, no quantitative data and production kinetics have been reported on the biosynthesis of the erinacines C and P in submerged cultures. In the present study, the production of erinacine C was optimized, and the product formation kinetics as well as the antimicrobial activity were studied by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) and direct bioautography. Results Oatmeal and Edamin® K were identified to be crucial media components for an efficient production of erinacine C. The highest concentrations of erinacine C were obtained in the optimized culture medium on the 9th culture day (approximately 260 mg L-1). The production of erinacine P was strongly time dependent. The maximum concentration of erinacine P of 184 mg L-1 was observed on the third culture day. Afterwards, the concentrations of erinacine P decreased while the concentrations of erinacine C steadily increased. Comparable results were obtained by HPTLC with UV detection and HPLC with diode-array detection (DAD) analyses. Direct bioautography allowed for an additional analysis of the antimicrobial activity of the secondary metabolites. Conclusions The C and N sources oatmeal and Edamin® K induced the formation of erinacine C. Detailed product formation kinetics of the erinacines C and P have been reported for the first time. HPTLC combined with the Aliivibrio fischeri bioassay allowed for an instant detection of cyathane diterpenoids in crude extracts and for an evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of the secondary metabolites directly on the plate

The borderlands : living between archetypes in young adult Chicana literature

This thesis focuses on two models for Chicana womanhood, which are the La Virgen de Guadalupe archetype and the La Malinche archetype. They are both mythic figures in Mexican culture that are diametrically opposed to one another. La Virgen is the good mother and La Malinche is the bad one. Some of the interventions include identifying the different degrees of liminality (YA lit, Borderlands Theory, and Adolescence). Additionally I close read scenes and look at how actions subvert language that reinforces the archetypes. I also argue that each Estrella and Esperanza seem to be each others' foils in that they are in different environments and have opposing female archetypes as their role model for womanhood, but that they are actually very similar. I look at how they each reject their archetype and end up in the same independent headspace. In chapter one, I ultimately make the argument that because Estrella has no opportunity for material or economic agency, sexual agency because an avenue to explore self sovereignty. And that, in Chapter 2, after being sexually assaulted, Esperanza decides to reject sexual sovereignty in favor of economic independence. She opts to leave the barrio and to pursue education in the hopes of coming back for those "who cannot out." In Chapter Three, I bring the two novels together to talk about hybridity and Anzaldua's "new Mestiza" -- that is, someone who lives in the in-between, who takes from both sides of the dichotomy and who lives for herself. Additionally, both girls straddle the line between girlhood and adulthood in both their ages and their responsibilities. Essentially, the two protagonists are representative of the "new mestiza." Each of them is "outsider within" -- someone who can navigate both the hegemonic culture and the non-hegemonic culture

Study of the 16O(p,gamma) Reaction at Astrophysical Energies

The Feshbach theory of the optical potential naturally leads to a microscopic description of scattering in terms of the many-body self-energy. We consider a recent calculation of this quantity for 16O and study the possibility of applying it at astrophysical energies. The results obtained for the phase shifts and the 16O(p,\gamma) capture suggest that such studies are feasible but the calculations require some improvement geared to this specific task.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; Proceedings of Nuclei In The Cosmos VIII, to appear in Nucl. Descritpion of Exotic Nuclei Using Continuum Shell Model

    Get PDF
In weakly bound exotic nuclei, number of excited bound states or narrow resonances is small and, moreover, they couple strongly to the particle continuum. Hence, these systems should be described in the quantum open system formalism which does not artificially separate the subspaces of (quasi-) bound and scattering states. The Shell Model Embedded in the Continuum provides a novel approach which solves this problem. Examples of application in sd-shell nuclei will be presented.Comment: Presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop Brijuni, Pula, Croatia, June 2-5, 200

L'édition électronique des dossiers de Bouvard et Pécuchet de Flaubert : des fragments textuels en quête de mobilité

    Get PDF
Disponible en ligne : http://w3.unicaen.fr/puc/ecrire/preprints/preprint0082011.pdfInternational audienceThe preliminary files of Bouvard et Pécuchet, Flaubert's posthumous and unfinished novel, are characterized by a complexity due to both the singularity of Flaubert's project and to the uncompleted state of this "documentary work-in-progress", particularly concerning the selection and classification of the quotations which were supposed to constitute the core of a "second volume" of the novel. To respond to the diverse challenges associated with the publishing of this corpus, the web site must allow visitors to not only access the fac-simile images of the manuscripts and their transcription but also to experiment with one or several conjectural reconstitutions of the organization of the "second volume". Thus it is necessary to first define, identify and describe the basic textual units which should remain mobile. This heuristic approach brings to light the interdependence of the choices concerning the structuring, encoding and conception of the publishing interfaces, which is characteristic of the electronic publishing projects.

LEARNING FROM NEAR MISSES IN MEDICATION ERRORS: A BAYESIAN APPROACH

    Get PDF
Medical errors originating in health care facilities are a significant source of preventable morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Voluntary error report systems that collect information on the causes and contributing factors of medi- cal errors regardless of the resulting harm may be useful for developing effective harm prevention strategies. Some patient safety experts question the utility of data from errors that did not lead to harm to the patient, also called near misses. A near miss (a.k.a. close call) is an unplanned event that did not result in injury to the patient. Only a fortunate break in the chain of events prevented injury. We use data from a large voluntary reporting system of 836,174 medication errors from 1999 to 2005 to provide evidence that the causes and contributing factors of errors that result in harm are similar to the causes and contributing factors of near misses. We develop Bayesian hierarchical models for estimating the log odds of selecting a given cause (or contributing factor) of error given harm has occurred and the log odds of selecting the same cause given that harm did not occur. The posterior distribution of the correlation between these two vectors of log-odds is used as a measure of the evidence supporting the use of data from near misses and their causes and contributing factors to prevent medical errors. In addition, we identify the causes and contributing factors that have the highest or lowest log-odds ratio of harm versus no harm. These causes and contributing factors should also be a focus in the design of prevention strategies. This paper provides important evidence on the utility of data from near misses, which constitute the vast majority of errors in our data
