Picidae
8 p. : ill. ; 24 cm.Includes bibliographical references (p. 8)."A new genus and species of woodpecker, Palaeonerpes shorti, is described from a left tibiotarsus from Lower Pliocene sediments of Nebraska. Palaeonerpes is morphologically distinct from all genera with which it was compared, and no clear evidence is present to assign Palaeonerpes to any genus of Recent woodpecker. General comments on the systematic status of the known fossil picids are presented. Palaeopicus has several features which suggest that it probably should be excluded from the Picidae. Uintornis is not a woodpecker, as Shufeldt (1915) correctly surmised. Pliopicus is a morphologically distinct genus that does not appear related to any genus of North American woodpeckers"--P. 7

Drugs targeting the bone microenvironment: new therapeutic tools in Ewing's sarcoma?
Introduction: Ewing's sarcoma (ES) is the second most frequent malignant primary bone tumour in children, adolescents and young adults. The overall survival is 60 – 70% at 5 years but still very poor for patients with metastases, disease relapse or for those not responding to chemotherapy. For these high risk patients, new therapeutic approaches are needed beyond conventional therapies (chemotherapy, surgery and radiation) such as targeted therapies.
Areas covered: Transcriptomic and genomic analyses in ES have revealed alterations in genes that control signalling pathways involved in many other cancer types. To set up more specific approaches, it is reasonable to think that the particular microenvironment of these bone tumours is essential for their initiation and progression, including in ES. To support this hypothesis, preclinical studies using drugs targeting bone cells (bisphosphonate zoledronate, anti-receptor activator of NF-κB ligand strategies) showed promising results in animal models. This review will discuss the new targeted therapeutic options in ES, focusing more particularly on the ones modulating the bone microenvironment.
Expert opinion: Targeting the microenvironment represents a new option for patients with ES. The proof-of-concept has been demonstrated in preclinical studies using relevant animal models, especially for zoledronate, which induced a strong inhibition of tumour progression in an orthotopic bone model
Confidence and competence with mathematical procedures
Confidence assessment (CA), in which students state alongside each of their answers a confidence level expressing how certain they are, has been employed successfully within higher education. However, it has not been widely explored with school pupils. This study examined how school mathematics pupils (N = 345) in five different secondary schools in England responded to the use of a CA instrument designed to incentivise the eliciting of truthful confidence ratings in the topic of directed (positive and negative) numbers. Pupils readily understood the negative marking aspect of the CA process and their facility correlated with their mean confidence with r = .546, N = 336, p < .001, indicating that pupils were generally well calibrated. Pupils’ comments indicated that the vast majority were positive about the CA approach, despite its dramatic differences from more usual assessment practices in UK schools. Some pupils felt that CA promoted deeper thinking, increased their confidence and had a potential role to play in classroom formative assessment
Serum osteoprotegerin is associated with pulse pressure in kidney transplant recipients
Pulse pressure (PP) reflects increased large artery stiffness, which is caused, in part, by arterial calcification in patients with chronic kidney disease. PP has been shown to predict both cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events in various patient populations, including kidney transplant (KTX) recipients. Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a marker and regulator of arterial calcification, and it is related to cardiovascular survival in hemodialysis patients. Here we tested the hypothesis that OPG is associated with increased pulse pressure. We cross-sectionally analyzed the association between serum OPG and PP in a prevalent cohort of 969 KTX patients (mean age: 51 +/- 13 years, 57% male, 21% diabetics, mean eGFR 51 +/- 20 ml/min/1.73 m2). Independent associations were tested in a linear regression model adjusted for multiple covariables. PP was positively correlated with serum OPG (rho = 0.284, p < 0.001). Additionally, a positive correlation was seen between PP versus age (r = 0.358, p < 0.001), the Charlson Comorbidity Index (r = 0.232, p < 0.001), serum glucose (r = 0.172, p < 0.001), BMI (r = 0.133, p = 0.001) and serum cholesterol (r = 0.094, p = 0.003). PP was negatively correlated with serum Ca, albumin and eGFR. The association between PP and OPG remained significant after adjusting for multiple potentially relevant covariables (beta = 0.143, p < 0.001). We conclude that serum OPG is independently associated with pulse pressure in kidney transplant recipients
Morphoagronomic characters and partial resistance to soybean rust in early soybean genotypes
Soybean crop, despite the technological evolution, did not reach an average of 4,000 kg ha-1 in Brazil due to the factors of climate, nutritional and soil fertility, genetics and phytosanitary problems. Among them is the rust-soy disease of soybean, caused by the fungus Phakopsora pachyrhizi Syd. & Syd., one of the most severe, with damage up to 100%. Among the management strategies are the use of early genotypes, use of preventive fungicides and cultivars with partial resistance and tolerant to phytopathogen. To obtain resistant cultivars, six dominant genes that condition vertical (qualitative) resistance, have already been reported in the literature, but the stability of this type of resistance is not durable. Therefore, the identification of genotypes that can be used as sources of horizontal (quantitative) resistance is essential to increase the longevity of the cultivars launched in the Brazilian market. This work aimed to evaluate the resistance of 12 soybean genotypes to the pathogen and yield responses. This work was developed at Fazenda do Glória, in Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU), located in the city of Uberlândia, MG, Brazil. In the agricultural year 2015/2016 an experiment was carried out with subplots with or without fungicide Azoxistrobina + Benzovindiflupyr and subsubplots related to the evaluation position in the plant. There were 12 early-cycle genotypes, 10 from the UFU germplasm laboratory (LAGER), a commercial susceptible control, and a known resistant LAGER control. They were outlined in randomized blocks with four replicates. The experimental plots were represented by two rows of 6 m x 0.5 m, and the 2.5 m 2 area consisted of the two central rows, eliminating 0.5 m at each end of the plot. The LAGER-210 and LAGER-216 genotypes were selected for crop and use value (CUV) studies because they showed partial resistance to rust, short cycle, good morphoagronomic characteristics and higher yields
The Role of RANK-Ligand Inhibition in Cancer: The Story of Denosumab
The bone is a very common site of metastasis in patients with advanced cancer. Skeletal metastases are most common in breast and prostate cancer, but virtually any advanced cancer may disseminate to the bone. On the basis of recent advances in the understanding of bone remodeling processes, denosumab, a fully human monoclonal antibody against RANK-L, has been developed. Phase III clinical trials have demonstrated that denosumab is well tolerated and effective in the treatment of bone loss and prevention of skeletal-related events in patients with bone metastases
