Observation of Three-dimensional Long-range Order in Smaller Ion Coulomb Crystals in an rf Trap
Three-dimensional long-range ordered structures in smaller and
near-spherically symmetric Coulomb crystals of ^{40}Ca^+ ions confined in a
linear rf Paul trap have been observed when the number of ions exceeds ~1000
ions. This result is unexpected from ground state molecular dynamics (MD)
simulations, but found to be in agreement with MD simulations of metastable ion
configurations. Previously, three-dimensional long-range ordered structures

Universality in edge-source diffusion dynamics
We show that in edge-source diffusion dynamics the integrated concentration
N(t) has a universal dependence with a characteristic time-scale tau=(A/P)^2
pi/(4D), where D is the diffusion constant while A and P are the
cross-sectional area and perimeter of the domain, respectively. For the
short-time dynamics we find a universal square-root asymptotic dependence
N(t)=N0 sqrt(t/tau) while in the long-time dynamics N(t) saturates
exponentially at N0. The exponential saturation is a general feature while the

Early motor developmental milestones and level of neuroticism in young adulthood:a 23-year follow-up study of the Copenhagen Perinatal Cohort
BackgroundStudies investigating early developmental factors in relation to psychopathology have mainly focused on schizophrenia. The personality dimension of neuroticism seems to be a general risk factor for psychopathology, but evidence on associations between early developmental precursors and personality traits is almost non-existent. This study is therefore the first to investigate associations between early motor developmental milestones and neuroticism in adulthood.MethodMothers of 9125 children of the Copenhagen Perinatal Cohort recorded 12 developmental milestones during the child's first year of life. A subsample of the cohort comprising 1182 individuals participated in a follow-up when they were aged 20–34 years and were administered the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ). Associations between motor developmental milestones and level of neuroticism, extraversion and psychoticism were analysed by multiple linear regression adjusting for for sex, single-mother status, parity, mother's age, father's age, parental social status and birth weight.ResultsAmong the 1182 participants with information on the EPQ, information on milestones was available for 968 participants. Infants who developed high levels of neuroticism as adults tended to sit without support, crawl, and walk with and without support significantly later than individuals with low levels of neuroticism (p values <0.05). These results remained significant after adjustment for the included covariates and for adult intelligence.ConclusionsThe findings are the first of their kind and suggest that delays in early motor development may not only characterize psychopathological disorders such as schizophrenia, but may also be associated with the personality dimension of neuroticism in adulthood.</jats:sec
Ptychographic X-ray computed tomography of extended colloidal networks in food emulsions
As a main structural level in colloidal food materials, extended colloidal
networks are important for texture and rheology. By obtaining the 3D
microstructure of the network, macroscopic mechanical properties of the
material can be inferred. However, this approach is hampered by the lack of
suitable non-destructive 3D imaging techniques with submicron resolution.
We present results of quantitative ptychographic X-ray computed tomography
applied to a palm kernel oil based oil-in-water emulsion. The measurements were
carried out at ambient pressure and temperature. The 3D structure of the
extended colloidal network of fat globules was obtained with a resolution of
around 300 nm. Through image analysis of the network structure, the fat globule
size distribution was computed and compared to previous findings. In further
support, the reconstructed electron density values were within 4% of reference

Bayesian Error Estimation in Density Functional Theory
We present a practical scheme for performing error estimates for Density
Functional Theory calculations. The approach which is based on ideas from
Bayesian statistics involves creating an ensemble of exchange-correlation
functionals by comparing with an experimental database of binding energies for
molecules and solids. Fluctuations within the ensemble can then be used to
estimate errors relative to experiment on calculated quantities like binding
energies, bond lengths, and vibrational frequencies. It is demonstrated that
the error bars on energy differences may vary by orders of magnitude for
different systems in good agreement with existing experience.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Transport coefficients for electrolytes in arbitrarily shaped nano and micro-fluidic channels
We consider laminar flow of incompressible electrolytes in long, straight
channels driven by pressure and electro-osmosis. We use a Hilbert space
eigenfunction expansion to address the general problem of an arbitrary cross
section and obtain general results in linear-response theory for the hydraulic
and electrical transport coefficients which satisfy Onsager relations. In the
limit of non-overlapping Debye layers the transport coefficients are simply
expressed in terms of parameters of the electrolyte as well as the geometrical
correction factor for the Hagen-Poiseuille part of the problem. In particular,
we consider the limits of thin non-overlapping as well as strongly overlapping
Debye layers, respectively, and calculate the corrections to the hydraulic

Refractive-index sensing with ultra-thin plasmonic nanotubes
We study the refractive-index sensing properties of plasmonic nanotubes with
a dielectric core and ultra-thin metal shell. The few-nm thin metal shell is
described by both the usual Drude model and the nonlocal hydrodynamic model to
investigate the effects of nonlocality. We derive an analytical expression for
the extinction cross section and show how sensing of the refractive index of
the surrounding medium and the figure-of-merit are affected by the shape and
size of the nanotubes. Comparison with other localized surface plasmon
resonance sensors reveals that the nanotube exhibits superior sensitivity and
comparable figure-of-merit
Spontaneous emission from large quantum dots in nanostructures: exciton-photon interaction beyond the dipole approximation
We derive a rigorous theory of the interaction between photons and spatially
extended excitons confined in quantum dots in inhomogeneous photonic materials.
We show that, beyond the dipole approximation, the radiative decay rate is
proportional to a non-local interaction function, which describes the
interaction between light and spatially extended excitons. In this regime,
light and matter degrees of freedom cannot be separated and a complex interplay
between the nanostructured optical environment and the exciton envelope
function emerges. We illustrate this by specific examples and derive a series
of important analytical relations, which are useful for applying the formalism
to practical problems. In the dipole limit, the decay rate is proportional to
the projected local density of optical states and we obtain the strong and weak
