    Splitting along a submanifold pair

The paper introduces a group LSPLSP of obstructions for splitting a homotopy equivalence along a pair of submanifolds. We develop exact sequences relating the LSPLSP-groups with various surgery obstruction groups for manifold triple and structure sets arising from triples of manifolds. The natural map from the surgery obstruction group of the ambient manifold to the LSPLSP-group provides an invariant when elements of the Wall group are not realized by normal maps of closed manifolds. Some LSPLSP-groups are computed precisely.Comment: K-theory, to appea

On structure sets of manifold pairs

In this paper we systematically describe relations between various structure sets which arise naturally for pairs of compact topological manifolds with boundary. Our consideration is based on a deep analogy between the case of a compact manifold with boundary and the case of a closed manifold pair. This approach also gives a possibility to construct the obstruction groups for natural maps of various structure sets and to investigate their properties

On torsion-free groups with finite regular file bases

The following question was asked by V. V. Bludov in The Kourovka Notebook in 1995: If a torsion-free group GG has a finite system of generators a1a_1, ..., ana_n such that every element of GG has a unique presentation in the form a1k1...ankna_1^{k_1}... a_n^{k_n} where kiZk_i\in\mathbb Z, is it true that GG is virtually polycyclic? The answer is ``not always.'' A counterexample is constructed in this paper as a group presented by generators and defining relations.Comment: version 3: 40 pages, 12 figures, typos corrected, converted to LaTeX; v2: 38 pages, 12 figures, improved readability; v1: 40 pages, 12 figure

Finitely generated infinite simple groups of infinite square width and vanishing stable commutator length

It is shown that there exist finitely generated infinite simple groups of infinite commutator width and infinite square width on which there exists no stably unbounded conjugation-invariant norm, and in particular stable commutator length vanishes. Moreover, a recursive presentation of such a group with decidable word and conjugacy problems is constructed.Comment: v4: 41 pages, 6 figures rescaled at 120%; references updated, typos corrected, other minor corrections. v3: minor changes to the title, text and figures. v2: 41 pages, 6 figures; correction: Ore's conjecture was proved in 2008; 2 references added. v1: 40 pages, 6 figure
