Activity-promoting gaming systems in exercise and rehabilitation
Commercial activity-promoting gaming systems provide a potentially attractive means to facilitate exercise and rehabilitation. The Nintendo Wii, Sony EyeToy, Dance Dance Revolution, and Xbox Kinect are examples of gaming systems that use the movement of the player to control gameplay. Activity-promoting gaming systems can be used as a tool to increase activity levels in otherwise sedentary gamers and also be an effective tool to aid rehabilitation in clinical settings. Therefore, the aim of this current work is to review the growing area of activity-promoting gaming in the context of exercise, injury, and rehabilitation
Tissue resolved, gene structure refined equine transcriptome.
BackgroundTranscriptome interpretation relies on a good-quality reference transcriptome for accurate quantification of gene expression as well as functional analysis of genetic variants. The current annotation of the horse genome lacks the specificity and sensitivity necessary to assess gene expression especially at the isoform level, and suffers from insufficient annotation of untranslated regions (UTR) usage. We built an annotation pipeline for horse and used it to integrate 1.9 billion reads from multiple RNA-seq data sets into a new refined transcriptome.ResultsThis equine transcriptome integrates eight different tissues from 59 individuals and improves gene structure and isoform resolution, while providing considerable tissue-specific information. We utilized four levels of transcript filtration in our pipeline, aimed at producing several transcriptome versions that are suitable for different downstream analyses. Our most refined transcriptome includes 36,876 genes and 76,125 isoforms, with 6474 candidate transcriptional loci novel to the equine transcriptome.ConclusionsWe have employed a variety of descriptive statistics and figures that demonstrate the quality and content of the transcriptome. The equine transcriptomes that are provided by this pipeline show the best tissue-specific resolution of any equine transcriptome to date and are flexible for several downstream analyses. We encourage the integration of further equine transcriptomes with our annotation pipeline to continue and improve the equine transcriptome
Reaction-diffusion systems with constant diffusivities: conditional symmetries and form-preserving transformations
Q-conditional symmetries (nonclassical symmetries) for a general class of
two-component reaction-diffusion systems with constant diffusivities are
studied. Using the recently introduced notion of Q-conditional symmetries of
the first type (R. Cherniha J. Phys. A: Math. Theor., 2010. vol. 43., 405207),
an exhaustive list of reaction-diffusion systems admitting such symmetry is
derived. The form-preserving transformations for this class of systems are
constructed and it is shown that this list contains only non-equivalent
systems. The obtained symmetries permit to reduce the reaction-diffusion
systems under study to two-dimensional systems of ordinary differential
equations and to find exact solutions. As a non-trivial example, multiparameter
families of exact solutions are explicitly constructed for two nonlinear
reaction-diffusion systems. A possible interpretation to a biologically
motivated model is presented
Global Versus Local Computations: Fast Computing with Identifiers
This paper studies what can be computed by using probabilistic local
interactions with agents with a very restricted power in polylogarithmic
parallel time. It is known that if agents are only finite state (corresponding
to the Population Protocol model by Angluin et al.), then only semilinear
predicates over the global input can be computed. In fact, if the population
starts with a unique leader, these predicates can even be computed in a
polylogarithmic parallel time. If identifiers are added (corresponding to the
Community Protocol model by Guerraoui and Ruppert), then more global predicates
over the input multiset can be computed. Local predicates over the input sorted
according to the identifiers can also be computed, as long as the identifiers
are ordered. The time of some of those predicates might require exponential
parallel time. In this paper, we consider what can be computed with Community
Protocol in a polylogarithmic number of parallel interactions. We introduce the
class CPPL corresponding to protocols that use , for some k,
expected interactions to compute their predicates, or equivalently a
polylogarithmic number of parallel expected interactions. We provide some
computable protocols, some boundaries of the class, using the fact that the
population can compute its size. We also prove two impossibility results
providing some arguments showing that local computations are no longer easy:
the population does not have the time to compare a linear number of consecutive

From theory to 'measurement' in complex interventions: methodological lessons from the development of an e-health normalisation instrument
<b>Background</b> Although empirical and theoretical understanding of processes of implementation in health care is advancing, translation of theory into structured measures that capture the complex interplay between interventions, individuals and context remain limited. This paper aimed to (1) describe the process and outcome of a project to develop a theory-based instrument for measuring implementation processes relating to e-health interventions; and (2) identify key issues and methodological challenges for advancing work in this field.<p></p>
<b>Methods</b> A 30-item instrument (Technology Adoption Readiness Scale (TARS)) for measuring normalisation processes in the context of e-health service interventions was developed on the basis on Normalization Process Theory (NPT). NPT focuses on how new practices become routinely embedded within social contexts. The instrument was pre-tested in two health care settings in which e-health (electronic facilitation of healthcare decision-making and practice) was used by health care professionals.<p></p>
<b>Results</b> The developed instrument was pre-tested in two professional samples (N = 46; N = 231). Ratings of items representing normalisation 'processes' were significantly related to staff members' perceptions of whether or not e-health had become 'routine'. Key methodological challenges are discussed in relation to: translating multi-component theoretical constructs into simple questions; developing and choosing appropriate outcome measures; conducting multiple-stakeholder assessments; instrument and question framing; and more general issues for instrument development in practice contexts.<p></p>
<b>Conclusions</b> To develop theory-derived measures of implementation process for progressing research in this field, four key recommendations are made relating to (1) greater attention to underlying theoretical assumptions and extent of translation work required; (2) the need for appropriate but flexible approaches to outcomes measurement; (3) representation of multiple perspectives and collaborative nature of work; and (4) emphasis on generic measurement approaches that can be flexibly tailored to particular contexts of study
Slightly generalized Generalized Contagion: Unifying simple models of biological and social spreading
We motivate and explore the basic features of generalized contagion, a model
mechanism that unifies fundamental models of biological and social contagion.
Generalized contagion builds on the elementary observation that spreading and
contagion of all kinds involve some form of system memory. We discuss the three
main classes of systems that generalized contagion affords, resembling: simple
biological contagion; critical mass contagion of social phenomena; and an
intermediate, and explosive, vanishing critical mass contagion. We also present
a simple explanation of the global spreading condition in the context of a

Heterogeneous Ice Nucleation by Soufriere Hills Volcanic Ash Immersed in Water Droplets
Fine particles of ash emitted during volcanic eruptions may sporadically influence cloud properties on a regional or global scale as well as influencing the dynamics of volcanic clouds and the subsequent dispersion of volcanic aerosol and gases. It has been shown that volcanic ash can trigger ice nucleation, but ash from relatively few volcanoes has been studied for its ice nucleating ability. In this study we quantify the efficiency with which ash from the Soufriere Hills volcano on Montserrat nucleates ice when immersed in supercooled water droplets. Using an ash sample from the 11th February 2010 eruption, we report ice nucleating efficiencies from 246 to 265 K. This wide range of temperatures was achieved using two separate droplet freezing instruments, one employing nanolitre droplets, the other using microlitre droplets. Soufriere Hills volcanic ash was significantly more efficient than all other ash samples that have been previously examined. At present the reasons for these differences are not understood, but may be related to mineralogy, amorphous content and surface chemistry
PÉRDIDAS DE CARBONO EN SUELOS DE LA LLANURA COSTERA DE NAYARIT, MÉXICO
Se analizaron las pérdidas de carbono orgánico en suelos a partir de 12 perfiles localizados en el delta del río San Pedro y distribuidos por nivel geomorfológico en la llanura costera del estado de Nayarit, México. El estudio se realizó comparando el contenido de carbono de los suelos con mayor conservación bajo bosque y cultivados. Los niveles considerados para este análisis fueron llanura alta, llanura media y sus depresiones, llanura baja y barras costeras. Las reservas de carbono (RCO) se determinaron teniendo en cuenta la densidad aparente (Da), el espesor de cada horizonte y el contenido de carbono. Los resultados se ponderaron para las profundidades 0-20, 0-50 y 0-100 cm. Las pérdidas de carbono identificadas fueron del 36 % para suelos Cambisoles de la llanura alta, 40 % para Feozem y Cambisoles de la llanura media, 60 % en suelos Feozem y Solonetz de las depresiones de la llanura media, 67 % para Cambisoles de la llanura baja y 90 % para Arenosoles de las barras costeras. Se demostró que la actividad agrícola intensiva y continuada, ha ocasionado pérdidas en el contenido de carbono; así mismo, la capa agrícola (20 cm) resulta la más afectada por esta actividad antropogénica
Boundary-layer effects on acoustic transmission through narrow slit cavities
PublishedJournal ArticleWe explore the slit-width dependence of the resonant transmission of sound in air through both a slit array formed of aluminum slats and a single open-ended slit cavity in an aluminum plate. Our experimental results accord well with Lord Rayleigh's theory concerning how thin viscous and thermal boundary layers at a slit's walls affect the acoustic wave across the whole slit cavity. By measuring accurately the frequencies of the Fabry-Perot-like cavity resonances, we find a significant 5% reduction in the effective speed of sound through the slits when an individual viscous boundary layer occupies only 5% of the total slit width. Importantly, this effect is true for any airborne slit cavity, with the reduction being achieved despite the slit width being on a far larger scale than an individual boundary layer's thickness. This work demonstrates that the recent prevalent loss-free treatment of narrow slit cavities within acoustic metamaterials is unrealistic.The authors would like to thank DSTL for their financial support
