SO2 damage to forests recorded by ERTS-1

    Get PDF
Sulfur dioxide fumes have been affecting the forests around Wawa, Ontario, which have been under surveillance for a number of years and were recently covered by ultra-small-scale (1:160,000) air photography for damage-assessment purposes. Image interpretation supported by electronic color enhancement was used to delineate on ERTS imagery three damage zones (total-kill, heavy-kill and medium-damage zones). The zones delineated on ERTS imagery are similar to the results of aerial sketch-mapping and air photo interpretation. Band 5 provided the greatest detail for assessing the damage to the forests, followed in successive order by bands 4, 6 and 7. Comparison with ERTS images obtained in the winter showed that even though the total-kill could be separated from heavy-kill damage zones, total-kill could not be consistently separated from clear-cut logging, burned areas, frozen lakes and bogs

Metadata for Digital Projects: An Overview of Practical Issues and Challenges

    Get PDF
This three-hour workshop will provide an overview of practical issues relating to metadata and controlled vocabularies for digital resources. There will be a review of metadata standards and vocabulary tools; project management and project planning considerations; and issues relating to publication formats, usability, and sustainability. Issues of metadata for the “Visible Web” and the “Deep Web” will also be addressed. Workshop participants will do an in-classroom exercise in which they will create a “storyboard” for a proposed digital project, including a high-level metadata model and proposed vocabularies to be used, as well as their strategies for how users will find and interact with their proposed digital resources

This paper presents the project "Digital Mellini: Exploring New Tools & Methods for Art-historical Research & Publication", a joint initiative of the Getty Research Institute (Los Angeles) and the University of Málaga (Spain). This paper discusses several aspects and challenges related to the development of digital resources for art-historical research. The main objectives for the Digital Mellini Project are: 1. To explore new methods and tools with which to reinvent the concept of scholarly work and critical publishing in the field of humanities, particularly in the context of art history, in which the convergence of text and image is essential and provides an interesting context for research—a context that has not yet been adequately investigated . 2. To create a methodological model for developing collaborative digital publications that incorporate texts, digital facsimiles, images, computational tools for linguistic analysis and visual communication, and forums for exchanging ideas and sharing knowledge. The ultimate goal is that the international community of specialists can utilize this methodological model and apply to a variety of art-historical projects.Universidad de Málaga.
