The use of compounded dispersing media for extemporaneous pediatric syrups with candesartan cilexetil and valsartan

Available tablets or capsules for adults are often used to prepare extemporaneously formulated medicines appropriate for children. The most acceptable drug forms in pediatric population are oral liquids and pharmacists use commercial dispersing media to compound syrups from an active substance or from tablets available on the market. In many countries ready-to-use dispersing media are not available or refunded, but pharmacists can use other compounded media, providing their compatibility and stability are proven. The aim of this study was to formulate and evaluate the stability of syrups with candesartan cilexetil (1 mg mL–1) and valsartan (4 mg mL–1) extemporaneously prepared using commercial tablets (Diovan® and Atacand®). The following three different suspending media, which could be easily made in a pharmacy, were investigated: V1 – with xanthan gum (0.5 %), V2 – the USP/NF vehicle for oral solution and V3 – the medium based on a simple sucrose syrup. The stability of preparations was studied during 35 days of storage in a dark place at controlled temperature of 25 and 4 ºC. During the study, microscopic observation was carried out and pH, viscosity, and concentration of candesartan cilexetil and valsartan were analyzed. Syrups with valsartan prepared with V2 and V3 media were stable for 3 or 4 weeks when stored at 25 °C, while syrups with candesartan were stable for as long as 35 days. For syrups prepared using V1 medium, the14-day expiry date was not achieved because of microbial deterioration

ii, 46 p.This study will address the method of Two-Way Immersion (TWI) bilingual education and its relevance in modem society. It will discuss the reasons to choose a TWI model as opposed to any of the other different methods of bilingual education, and how this model fits into the American public school system. Finally, it will aim to show the benefits of TWI to students of any native language in any socioeconomic class

Career Self-Efficacy: A Mixed Methods Investigation of an Immersive Living-Learning STEM Camp

    No full text
Many programs and interventions have been designed and implemented to entice women into Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) majors and careers, however, there continues to be incongruity between genders. This discrepancy between males and females pursuing STEM degrees and jobs has impacted the educational and economic growth of the United States by not meeting the demands of the current workforce, nor does it prepare enough highly educated and skilled individuals in STEM fields needed to meet the demands of the 2028 workforce. Although these demands are apparent, women are still less likely to pursue STEM education and careers. Previous research determined that negative female gender stereotypes and biases are associated with this lack of women in STEM, and notes that lack of community and societal impacts, as well as unwelcoming work atmospheres, are other mitigating concerns affecting their educational and career decision-making. The purpose of this dissertation study was to investigate and discover what role immersive STEM-based Living-Learning Programs (LLP or L/L) could have in encouraging and enticing young women to pursue STEM majors and careers, securing not only their futures, but advancing the economic and social growth of the country. This mixed methods study aimed to uncover the effectiveness of an immersive STEM-based LLP on high school students’ career content knowledge and Career Decision Self-Efficacy (CDSE), which is the confidence that one has in their ability to participate in educational career planning and preparation, as well as the decision-making that those inquiries, and skills, require. Specifically, this research explored the impact and usefulness of communal learning and near-peer mentoring relationships on the CDSE of both female and male students. This study applied Social Constructivism, Social Cognitivism, and Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) as its theoretical framework, however, Feminist Theory did emerge. The immersive STEM-based LLP used in this study significantly impacted the CDSE and career content knowledge of its participants. The findings illustrate the role of the university-hosted LLP structure in encouraging and supporting young women to pursue STEM fields, specifically the influential interactions and personality traits of near-peer mentors, the lived educational experiences, and the collaborative learning and living with both peers and near-peers

Are Sex Differences in Collegiate and High School Sports-Related Concussion Reflected in the Guidelines? A Scoping Review

    No full text
Background: Sport-related concussion (SRC) is a common sport injury. Females are participating in sports at increasing rates, and there is growing awareness that female athletes may be more vulnerable to SRC. Objectives: We aimed to identify sex differences in epidemiology, clinical manifestation and assessment of SRC and examine how these relate to the 6th International Conference on Concussion in Sport (ICCS). Methods: We conducted a scoping review of the Medline database and identified 58 studies examining the effects of sex on SRC in collegiate and high school athletes that were written in English and published in a peer-reviewed journal between March 2012 and March 2022. Results: We found that female athletes suffer higher rates of concussion in sex-comparable sports, in particular soccer. Female athletes experience more somatic symptoms—headache/migraine/sleep disturbance—and may take longer to recover from concussion. Sex differences were also identified regarding some aspects of sideline concussion assessment with the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool. Conclusions: Females are at greater risk and experience SRC differently than males; this is mostly likely due to a combination of biomechanical factors, differences in neck musculature and hormonal and social factors. Sex differences are not widely addressed by the 6th ICSS, which informs many sports’ concussion protocols
