A poco più di cinquant’anni dalla morte, in questo libro Marcello Mustè ricostruisce l’itinerario speculativo di Felice Balbo (Torino, 1° gennaio 1913-Roma, 3 febbraio 1964), una delle voci più significative della filosofia italiana del secondo Novecento. A partire dall’incontro con i cattolici comunisti e dalla collaborazione con la Casa Einaudi, il volume propone una lettura delle opere del pensatore piemontese, come L’uomo senza miti (1945) e Il laboratorio dell’uomo (1946), seguendo il percorso che lo portò, dopo il 1949, a rivedere molte posizioni precedenti, in dialogo con autori quali Norberto Bobbio e Augusto Del Noce, e ad abbandonare, nel 1951, il Partito comunista. Attraverso un esame ravvicinato delle fonti e delle frequentazioni di Balbo, l’autore offre un’interpretazione originale di quella “filosofia dell’essere” che segnò l’ultima fase della sua elaborazione, dal libro del 1962 sulle Idee per una filosofia dello sviluppo umano fino ai frammenti postumi di Essere e progresso. In his History of Italy from 1871 to 1915, published in 1928 during the Fascist period, Benedetto Croce traced the profile of the Italian politics and culture in the turn of the century, interweaving the analysis of the positivism’s crisis (with the so-called «rebirth of idealism») and that, now dramatic, of liberal institutions. For many reasons, History of Italy is not only a great history book, but also the proof of a real drama in the liberal conscience after the rise of fascism. ACOUSTIC MAPPING VELOCIMETRY PROOF-OF-CONCEPT EXPERIMENT

Knowledge of sediment dynamics in rivers is of great importance for various practical purposes. Despite its high relevance in riverine environment processes, the monitoring of sediment rates remains a major and challenging task for both suspended and bedload estimation. While the measurement of suspended load is currently an active area of testing with non-intrusive technologies (optical and acoustic), bedload measurement does not mark a similar progress. This paper describes an innovative combination of measurements techniques and analysis protocols that establishes the proof-ofconcept for a promising technique, labeled herein Acoustic Mapping Velocimetry (AMV). The technique estimates bedload using non-intrusive measurements acquired in rivers developing bedforms. The raw information for AMV is collected with acoustic multi-beam technology that in turn provides maps of the river bathymetry over swaths of the river cross-section (acoustic mapping). As long as the acoustic maps can be acquired relatively quickly and the repetition rate for the mapping is commensurate with the movement of the bedforms, the acoustic maps can capture continuously the progression of the bedform movement. Conversion of the bed elevation maps in homologous gray-level “images” followed by application of particle image velocimetry concepts to the obtained maps allow quantification of the bedform dynamics as two-dimensional velocity maps superposed on the streambed plane. Furthermore, use of the velocity fields in conjunction with conventional analytical methods for estimation of the bed movement (e.g., Exner equation) enable estimation of bedload rates over the whole imaged area in any direction. The technique represents a promising approach for in-situ measurement of the bedform dynamics either as a distribution of bedload rates over the stream cross section or as a bulk bedload rate in the streamwise direction, as typically requested in most of the practical applications

Influence of junction angle on three-dimensional flow structure and bed morphology at confluent meander bends during different hydrological conditions

Recent field and modeling investigations have examined the fluvial dynamics of confluent meander bends where a straight tributary channel enters a meandering river at the apex of a bend with a 90° junction angle. Past work on confluences with asymmetrical and symmetrical planforms has shown that the angle of tributary entry has a strong influence on mutual deflection of confluent flows and the spatial extent of confluence hydrodynamic and morphodynamic features. This paper examines three-dimensional flow structure and bed morphology for incoming flows with high and low momentum-flux ratios at two large, natural confluent meander bends that have different tributary entry angles. At the high-angle (90°) confluent meander bend, mutual deflection of converging flows abruptly turns fluid from the lateral tributary into the downstream channel and flow in the main river is deflected away from the outer bank of the bend by a bar that extends downstream of the junction corner along the inner bank of the tributary. Two counter-rotating helical cells inherited from upstream flow curvature flank the mixing interface, which overlies a central pool. A large influx of sediment to the confluence from a meander cutoff immediately upstream has produced substantial morphologic change during large, tributary-dominant discharge events, resulting in displacement of the pool inward and substantial erosion of the point bar in the main channel. In contrast, flow deflection is less pronounced at the low-angle (36°) confluent meander bend, where the converging flows are nearly parallel to one another upon entering the confluence. A large helical cell imparted from upstream flow curvature in the main river occupies most of the downstream channel for prevailing low momentum-flux ratio conditions and a weak counter-rotating cell forms during infrequent tributary-dominant flow events. Bed morphology remains relatively stable and does not exhibit extensive scour that often occurs at confluences with concordant beds
